After a dozen years out of the playoffs, this was still a positive step for that franchise. The question is whether they can build on it.

That arena sounded pretty raucous last night. Hopefully this season has finally generated a little fan interest down in south Florida.

Much respect to Paul MacLean and his mustache. After getting the Sens got their asses kicked in the first game, he changed tactics and made it a lot closer than I thought it would be.

No bottom 4 East, but now every seed number has one team through: 1 (NY), 2 (STL), 3 (PHX), 4 (NSH), 5 (PHI), 6 (NJ), 7 (WSH), and 8 (LA)

Still kinda fun

OK, that's pretty cool. PHI-LA in the finals would be awesome for the revenge factor of Carter/Richards.

It did sound raucous, but did they make any money?

I do realize that getting the fans interested is probably more important, so if they were selling tickets last night at a loss that could be compensated by the uptick in fan interest.

The problem is that the next NHL season is six months away and the next possible Florida home playoff game is a shade under a year away.

That's an awful long time to sustain that interest in what was ultimately just a first round exit.

EMCGuy: would hate to see philly's goon squad

I'm curious who would be a goon on Philly these days?

Hartnell can be dirty, but not a head hunter or knee-to-knee guy like the Bruins/Pens

Rinaldo is an idiot but doesn't play much, and probably won't play anymore with JvR back.

That's about it.

The Bloos might have something to say about that, especially if PHO can make that series last a good long time. Rinne has a lot of miles on those wheels this season already, he has got to be getting tired.

I don't think the Kings can out-D the Bloos, but that series is going to be a snoozer when it comes to offense. I think it goes seven, they play 25+ periods, and a grand total of 10 goals are scored (both teams).

Carcillo was the goon squad. Good riddance to that rubbish.

Rinaldo dumbass and really you never heard about him until that dumb penalty and like someone said above, James Van Der Beek is back so he's off to Dawson's creek.

Hartnell? He just a strong guy. He's as much a thug as Malkin is. Can hold it and can be aggressive.

Not to mention the Caps will likely be stronger next year, so the Division title isn't a lock. Plus there's a handful of teams that could have(and in some cases should have) made the playoffs this year that didn't.

I was really hoping to see Florida advance, but, as has been mentioned, after such a long drought just getting there was pretty big. And while being close doesn't cut it, going to 2OT in game 7 gives them a lot to build on in the autumn.

Pretty much this. I used to loathe the Flyers, but fact is that everyone on the team that made me dislike them is gone (aside from the douchebag VP). Briere can be a diver at times, but most teams have someone like that. Hartnell can play like an ass, but is also very entertaining to watch.

If the Brodeur from the 2 periods of OT last night shows up next round and the Devils can get back to the regular season PK form then they should be able to take Phili. At the very least there is no way Marty plays worse than Fleury did for the Pens in round one while I'm not sure Bryzgalov will play much better than he did.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are fewer than 20 goals scored in the entire WCSF.

Captain Oates: while I'm not sure Bryzgalov will play much better than he did.

Bryz had 1 bad game (which the whole team tanked). If you factor out that game he gave up just over 3 goals per game.

In fact, if you factor out the awful game 4, he held the Pens a bit under their season average per game.

Obviously he needs to do a bit better, but he didn't really shiat the bed.

Once each round is over, forget about it. It's a clean slate in the next round.

Boston got taken to the brink in Game 7 OT in the first round against a mediocre Montreal team last season. Then they swept the next round and were on their way to a Cup.

I blame the refs for the crappy officiating in game six. Yeah I know it's a seven game series, but the reffing in the second period of game six was terrible and cost the Sens the game.

I don't really care who wins in the west, but I suppose out of all the teams in the east, either Washington or New Jersey. NJ-Phoenix would be great - either Shane Doan gets a ring or Brodeur gets his retirement ring.

If the local news using a college's logo instead of the pro team's is any indication, it hasn't.

Naw I'm kidding you guys are alright. Series was way more interesting than I expected and the fans have been a class act. One of a few series that didn't get ugly. Yormark is still an a-hole though.

Shane Doan probably deserves a ring more than any other player in the league. He's been a very good player for a long, long time, without much success to show for it. He's earned it.

Sometimes I root for teams because of players like that. That's why I was rooting for Tampa in the 2004 Finals. I wanted to see Dave Andreychuk finally get his name on the Cup.

The Panthers don't own the arena. It's owned by Broward County.

The cost of gameday operations is pretty negligible compared to ticket revenue, no matter how they're priced. And even if they gave all the tickets away for free, they still would have made money because of all the ancillary revenue streams in the arena (concessions, merchandise, etc.).

They got taken to the brink because Ottawa is an excellent team and a few freak occurrences. They're still the #1 seed.

As far as backed into the playoffs, you're not giving Ottawa enough credit. They played extremely well for a #8 seed. They played more like a #2 or #3 seed.

Yes but what kind of idiot wouldn't be able to make money on a sold out playoff building? And the biggest expense (player salaries) is irrelevant in the playoffs.
