I wonder if China will start military drills again and cancel this. In the early 2000s we were starting talks about moving some assets out of SK and Japan (needed them in the Middle East) and China sent out its fleet for drills. Like some dumbass victory lap because they heard the Americans were leaving.

SK and Japan wake up to a massive military drill and are suddenly on the phone with DC "You know we'd rather they stay".

/was on the DMZ for awhile

The Marines on Camp Foster and Airmen on Kadena AFB are still very much so active in that department, I'm sure.

In general, not news. Futenma has been on the way out for a long time, the others aren't going anywhere though. Foster, Kadena, Buckner, and Torii aren't going to go away any time soon.

I know this is a result of WW2, but do we really need to be occupying Japan today? If we were to pull all our troops would a long tentacle come across the pacific and slap California off the US and into the sea? If so, I think we should strongly consider the upside of this.

You see WWII may have ended but there is a small thing like China that wants to over run the whole Pacific Ocean like the Japanese did in WWII and the smaller fact that the US is STILL at war with North Korea.

They aren't there about occupying Japan, they're there so that we have a nice Air Force base, and a large Marine presence close to Korea. When I was in Okinawa, we trained to be geared up and headed to that fine peninsula within 36 hours of an invasion.

And pretty much this.

CSB:
The Okinawans would always biatch about the trouble drunk Marines, especially the underage ones caused. When I was there, the MEF commander pointed out that the drinking age on the island was 20, and on base it was 21. Since every place on base carded, junior Marines would go off base and get hammered, because no one did. The general offered to have NCOs and officers serve as courtesy patrols, and card at the doors of bars out in town, thus keeping underage guys at least from drinking. The Okinawans turned him down flat. He told them to stop complaining to the Marines then when young guys got drunk and did stupid shait.

While we're hardly a bunch of saints when it comes to foreign policy, I think most East Asians IMHO would rather deal with an imperialist US (or atleast continue the current status quo) than an imperialist China. China hasn't invaded anyone in the past 20 years, but their actions in the past decade, even in the past month (the naval pushing match with the Philippines in the Sprats a few weeks ago), shows once the US leaves they arent gonna be slouches about actively addressing their territorial greviances with Japan, on the Spratleys and with Taiwan.

North Korea and China are nearby. It's not a terrible strategic idea to have 9,000 Marines on call in that area given the state of the North Korean regime. And before anyone says I don't value the lives of those Marines there, I'll let you know my cousin is one of them and is going to be returning home soon after a few years at Okinawa. China seems more sane, but it's not out of the question that they'd decide it was time for Taiwan to rejoin the mainland in the Peasants' Struggle.

The thing is, the US has been pretty amicable to the places it "occupies" (as some would call it), and given what happened in WWII, the US was downright merciful to Japan and Germany by keeping troops on a base. Most victors throughout history just swallowed up defeated countries as territories and removed their ability to govern themselves. A good number charged tribute from the local population and violently crushed any opposition to their presence. Before we get all "It's about time the US stopped with its empire building ways" in this thread, remember that.

WADR, 20 years to PRC is a few ticks of the clock. Chinese civilization is about 5000 years old. Part of why they think Taiwan is none of anyone's business is resentment over the Opium Wars, colonies and the Boxer Rebellion.

Not only do you sound like a total idiot, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

1.) Japan has Aegis destroyers, not cruisers.

2.) They're extremely proficient at what they do, including missile defense.

3.) Let's face it, everyone knew that rocket would fail...

Oh that's just an excuse for them being dicks to everyone in the region. I heard that as well when I lived several years in China. 5000 years of civilization, yeah sure. But they dont mention that the PRC, the present government as it exists was only around since 1949, and so in that sense they are a young country.

Not to mention, it's not like every other Asian race and nation in East Asia wasn't getting dicked by the western powers as well. So now China deserves the Sprats, Taiwan (a lot of Taiwanese think otherwise), whatever islands disputed with Japan and that territory between it and India. Not to mention letting their fishing fleets and military just stroll around the East Asian areas unimpeded. Yes, their history is tragic. It doesnt mean they get to act like a big bully to all the smaller and weaker Asian races and countries. Fark China.
