I've never played any Kirby games, but the character struck me as a Dizzy rip off.

Funny, it took me about an hour the first time I played it. Easy short game.

Kirby's Epic Yarn is a work of art.

It's pretty much a remake of Kirby's Adventure on the NES. It doesn't have any new ideas (other than simultaneously 4 players).

Yes, Kirby, of which there hasn't been a bad game of him ... well, I think ever. And, unlike Mario, many of the games are pretty different; the only difference is that Kirby isn't whored out to other products for sales boosts.

i don't see why everybody is giving subby such a hard time. i knew kirby was around, but after seeing the article i found he was much more popular. i have been playing nintendo games for quite a while now (kickle cubicle, bubble bobble, master blaster...) but i guess i never saw his nes game. it makes sense that the majority of his games are on gameboy since that is when i really became aware of him. but if somebody asked me what the most popular game he has been in, i would have said super smash brothers or something.

Yeah, other than Yoshi's Safari, the Mario Party series, the Mario Kart Series, Luigi's Mansion, the RPGs, DDR Mario Mix, Dr. Mario and the Yoshi puzzle games, the edutainment games, the sports games, and his appearances in Smash Bros, Mario is the exact same every time. Why won't Nintendo do something different with their character that's appeared in every genre of game except RTS and MMORPG?

Why is Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on that list? (Kirby's Avalanche)

It uses the exact same sprites...at least Dr. RMBM tried to look different from Dr. Mario

Aw, Kickle Cubicle was a fun game. Anyhow, I think the most popular Kirby game was probably the SNES "Kirby's Adventure." Lots of fun in that one.

Also, this is relevant (and Fark won't let me link the comic).

Kirby's Adventure on the NES and Kirby Super Star for the SNES are frakkin' classics. I think KSS got an updated port to the DS.

You know, I think a Mario theme RTS would work pretty well.

Factions: Mushroom Kingdom, Koopas, maybe Yoshis as a third faction, if not, cavalry units for MK

Goombas and Toads as the basic infantry, Bullet Bills as artillery, Chomps as defensive emplacements. The more I think about it, the more it actually works. Get on this Nintendo!

Many of the titles you mentioned are merely wrapped in Mario characters and are directly culled from other stuff. You named several of them: Dr. Mario--ripoff of Tetris. Mario Kart--direct copy of any number of racing games (including Air Ride), and so on. Other than the Galaxy games, there hasn't been an original PURE Mario in some time.

Air Ride came long after Super Mario Kart debuted. Are you saying that games companies shouldn't be allowed to have their franchises do something other than what the first game in the series did?

We want to talk about "rip-offs", how about all the mascot racing games that appeared after the Mario Kart series began? All of the party games that appeared after Mario Party? All of the 3-D platformers that appeared after Super Mario 64?

You complain about how Mario doesn't do anything different yet discard all of the games where he does do something different. What would you do with the Mario series? Tell us your idea for the next Mario game and what it can do differently from the ones before it.

Galaxy was a big improvement for Mario...when was 2 released? Over 2 years ago. Since then, we've not seen any "true" Mario projects that exist solely in the Mario universe. Instead, we have crossovers, uneven racing games, party games that have been poorly reviewed, and so on. I don't need to come up with any ideas; I'm not getting paid to do so. But I would go back and return Mario to the original concept rather than having him appear in a variety of games, many of them subpar. Think: could you play Super Sluggers without Mario characters? Hell yes. Same with Kart and Party. The same can even be said of Luigi's Mansion. But you can't have Galaxy without the Mario universe.

May want to re-read there chief. I just advocated for a Mario RTS. I wasn't the one who ran off the list of out of genre games.

I don't have a Wii but do own a PS3 and 360. The Wii wasn't aimed at me, so it's been a long time since I've bothered with the Mario franchise. Every Nintendo IP will be circling the drain ala Sonic if the WiiU is as big of a catastrophe that people think it will be.

If I still had my N64 you bet I would still be playing Mario64 and Mario Kart...64. The fact that plenty of people PREFER the older iterations is rather telling of how stale things have gotten.

Wow - I had that original Game Boy game. '92 makes me feel old!

And Kirby is a bastard in Smash Brothers - You think you've got him knocked out, and he just floats back over.

/Losing to Kirby is almost as bad as losing to Jigglypuff
//Almost.

Kirby has always struck me as their bastard child franchise. In addition to it's bread and butter platforming games, they stick him in all sorts of experimental games where mario just wouldn't fit, like tilt and tumble, pinballl land, dream course, epic yarn, etc.

His platformers can be a bit hit or miss too, and don't get the respect they deserve. I really wish they treated him more as a frontline series then the second string they seem to.

TheManWho: I've never played any Kirby games, but the character struck me as a Dizzy rip off.

It isn't really. Dizzy is a cutesy bouncing egg and Kirby is a cutesy bouncing.. I don't know, a testicle or something, but the similarity ends there. The character and game mechanics are completely different, much more so than comparing screenshots suggests.

If anything, Kirby is more of a Henry Hoover ripoff than he is Dizzy.

Kirby's Epic Yarn has great graphics and interesting gameplay. Why have there not been more costumes or quilts based on it, especially from crafty people? Also, what other game lets you eat what troubles you?

Actually, no, it only proves that YOU prefer the older iterations, because, by your own admission, you haven't "bothered" with them since. It isn't "telling" of anything other than the fact that you like to make claims about games you've never even played.
