I love how North Korea is the enemy in the new remake. farking joke. It was originally filmed as the Chinese when they first shot it, but then the Chinese government got pissed and forbid MGM from releasing it that way. Apparently threatened to block any of the studios movies from release in China. So, MGM sucked Chinese cock and changed it. Farking sad.

Even more sad given that our next conflict with a true uniformed military that's somewhat close to our level of tech and training will probably be with China.

That's a pretty big "somewhat", but yeah, the only credible possible enemy that *MIGHT* have the ability to pull something like that off would be the PRC. The North Koreans? They couldn't even successfully invade South Korea.

I'm still waiting for the 'gotcha' moment with NK. "You think we've been mismanaged, poor, and incapable of anything. Well, we've secretly been tunneling under SK for 50 years, and now we're poised to create the world's largest sinkhole!"

No shiat. We have already done a pretty good job of managing to avoid teaching anyone in the last generation or two that up until this Middle East foolishness, our two major wars since WWII were fought against Chinese forces. Also that we got our asses kicked pretty well by them both times.
We also have done a pretty good job of ignoring that the primary espionage threats, and the majority of spies we catch and intrusions we detect are Chinese.
Even the fact that very recently compromised Chinese-made chips that opened up our military networks to them, not to mention ones designed to be able to remotely disable critical aircraft systems made it into in our fighter planes was pretty well documented yet almost never reported.

wonder what happens when finally maybe we wrap our brains around the notion that they have never, ever, claimed to be our friends? nor expressed any interest to, no matter how hard we really wish it to be true.

Ummmm... how about no? The Chinese provided little military aid to N. Vietnam. The Soviet Union provided the bulk of assistance in that war. Heck, roughly a decade or so later the China invaded Vietnam (and actually got beat pretty badly, all things considered). Also, during that era in time the USSR and China were fairly frosty with one another.

Korea, on the other hand, was primarily against the Chinese. But we didn't "have our asses kicked fairly well." The war itself was a draw. We were driven all the way from the Chinese border basically back to the 38th parallel, but then again saying we were "heavily outnumbered" is quite the understatement (in addition there is a whole host of command issues, the fact it was a surprise attack, etc.). Plus in the end it resulted in a draw. If you want to look at the costs exacted by each side it becomes very clear the US gave more than it received.

Since Wicked Chinchilla schooled you on the Vietnam War thing, I'm going to point out that you are absolutely correct on this one. In fact, they manage to figure out how to monitor us monitoring their communications. It took years to set up that operation, and they used US citizens of Chinese extraction to set it up so that they'd pass the requisite background checks.

If I recall the original movie, wasn't it south american forces that invaded as a front for the Soviet Union?
It basically followed the pattern of the Korean and Vietnam wars (because our politicians are idiots and can't tell the difference between one army and another when they stencil a different flag on the tanks).

If I was to spin a yarn where the Norks invaded, it would be a repeat of the Korean war by using them as a proxy of China. They'd attack with Chinese equipment, Chinese tactics, Chinese "Instructors" and be backed by Chinese money.
What is stationed inside NK now wouldn't mean much because this force is all imported by way of China with two thirds of the manpower being non-Nork.

I remember reading that during the Vietnam War, the Chinese were regularly stealing from the trains carrying supplies from the USSR to North Vietnam. With friends like these...

During the Korean War, the Chinese also used a lot of ex-Nationalist (KMT) soldiers captured during their civil war as human shields. Kind of like Operation Get Behind the Darkies from the South Park movie.

Yes, and no.

The first wave to hit Calumet were Soviet paratroopers ("Shtoi delaesh!"), followed closely by Cuban occupation troops some hours later. Calumet was mostly in the hands of Cubans, with some Soviet soldiers who were apparently either REMF troops, or there for rest/regrouping/rearming etc. For most of the movie, the "Wolverines" were essentially up against the second or third string. That's why they did pretty well at first. Then the Soviets got serious and brought in Colonel Strelnikov and his Spetznaz, and the Wolverines were pretty much wiped out within a month of that happening, which seems pretty realistic.

Now, when Colonel Tanner outlines the war for them, he does mention that the Mexicans and other Central American troops come up from the south, with the Soviets coming down from the north, so yeah, in a sense it's kind of true from an overall picture of the war.

In fact, the only way something like that would have been plausible back then is if Mexico joins in, and the Russians invade through Alaska and Canada, though it would take a *LONG* time for that, and it would be a very thin and vulnerable supply line.

If I was to spin a yarn where the Norks invaded, it would be a repeat of the Korean war by using them as a proxy of China. They'd attack with Chinese equipment, Chinese tactics, Chinese "Instructors" and be backed by Chinese money.

Many silent Western films were made in and around Las Vegas, especially in the years 1913-1915, including a number that starred Tom Mix.

The 1962-1963 NBC television western series Empire and its second-season version entitled Redigo were filmed in Santa Fe and near Storrie Lake in Las Vegas.

In the 1969 movie Easy Rider, Las Vegas, New Mexico, is the town where the two bikers ride behind a parade, are arrested for "parading without a permit," and meet Jack Nicholson's character in jail. The name of the town can be viewed in the background in one scene during this part of the movie.

The town was the filming location for parts of the 1978 movie Convoy, a film about truck drivers inspired by the 1975 song of the same name.

Parts of the 1982 made-for-TV film The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez were filmed in and around Las Vegas.

Las Vegas was the real-world town used to represent a fictional setting of Calumet, Colorado in John Milius' 1984 film Red Dawn. As of 2005, many of the buildings and structures seen in the film remain.

Parts of the 1994 movie Speechless, with Geena Davis and Michael Keaton, about a fictional New Mexico senatorial campaign, were filmed in Las Vegas.

Several scenes in the 1998 film John Carpenter's Vampires were filmed on the plaza.

The Hi-Lo Country and All the Pretty Horses, released in 1998 and 2000 respectively, were almost entirely shot here.

In the 2001 documentary Freedom Downtime, a cross-country road trip to Las Vegas, Nevada ends up in Las Vegas, New Mexico by mistake.

In 2006, the film Fanboys used Las Vegas as one of its film locations. The film is about a dying Star Wars fan and was released in 2009.

Portions of the 2006 movie The Astronaut Farmer were filmed here.

The 2007 film Wild Hogs starring John Travolta included scenes filmed around Las Vegas.

Most of the 2007 Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men was filmed here.

The 2008 film Beer for My Horses starring Toby Keith and Rodney Carrington was filmed in and around Las Vegas.

The 2009 thriller Not Forgotten was shot in Las Vegas for incentives reasons.

The 2010 film Due Date starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifinakis was partly filmed in Las Vegas, and was used as a fake border crossing into Mexico.

Scenes for the 2011 film Paul starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost with Kristen Wiig, Jason Bateman, Bill Hader, Seth Rogan, Joe Lo Truglio and Sigourney Weaver, were filmed in and around Las Vegas.

Except for one thing: We can replace China as a producer by shifting production to numerous other countries. We are China's single biggest customer, by far: They can't replace us as easily as we can replace them, and they *KNOW* that. In the US, it will merely mean shortages of cheap socks and electronics. In China, it will mean vast manufacturing sectors idled, meaning people out of work, which is bad news for a society that abhors social unrest as much as Chinese society.

In any kind of an actual shooting war, we can shut off almost all of their exports. They can't effectively shut off our imports and exports.

BTW, that works for us: The moment hostilities commence, all that credit they are holding becomes instantly worthless. In effect, they would have given us free money. They are left holding nothing. They know that, which is what will restrain them from doing anything stupid. They might hint at stuff, and rattle sabers a bit, but they won't do anything to piss us off too much, because they'd be slitting their own throat.

Not unless some of the dodgier nations to the south start making inconvenient alliances.
There's no particular love for the US down there, thanks to the bullshiat games we played in the 70s and 80s and the ongoing drug war nonsense.
If, say, China were to swoop in with the *actual* economic assistance we never offered, it may become a plausible concern.

starsrift: "China is the largest foreign creditor of the USA... Tanks and bullets are not the things to be scared of."

China buys our bonds because they need foreign assets. They don't have much choice. They could shift to buying primarily European debt, but unless the entire world agrees with them that the US isn't a safe investment, that will be seen as an *increase* in risk on their part. And that's not without consequences. Similarly if they try to ditch the debt they already hold. And if the entire world agreed with China, China's holdings of US debt would plummet long before they could offload it. Again, a move not without consequences. Severe ones, given the amount of debt they hold.

Then there's the minor detail that China's own economy is cooling off and its investors are starting to take a closer look at the details of their growth and the distorting effects of their crony capitalism.

And then consider that our interest rates are absurdly low. We don't need China's voracious appetite for US debt. If they dial back there are plenty of other investors who will happily fill the void.

In short: the threat of China backing away from US debt is largely overblown and as a practical matter has never been weaker.

There is only a *SINGLE* EU nation in the top 10 for Chinese Exports, Germany, and they are #6, with roughly a third of the US.
