How the hell could you make a lamp with a 20 mm?

That's a pretty nifty looking lamp, but I thought a 20 mm would be a bit smaller. Was thinking about the length of a hand.

Yeah, making a lamp is a lot easier when you start off with a 75mm recoilless rifle casing.

Yeah a 2cm wide shell isn't exactly lamp sized. A nightlight perhaps?

20mm only tells you the width of the round it self, not the width or length of the casing. The article doesn't bother to mention which particular type of 20mm ammo and indeed there may not be enough left to make it immediately identifiable. They do say they think it was left over from WW2 but they don't say from what country so that doesn't narrow it down much. We could be talking anything from a 20x72 to a 20x138.

Given that this was in the US my best guess is a 20x110mm since those were used by the US Navy. From the fact that he went to a hospital in an ambulance rather than to the morgue in buckets I'm guessing it was an armor piercing round rather than a high explosive one.

A 20mm shell is only slightly larger than a .50 BMG, which are ~13mm.

I used to have a lamp made from a training mortar, key point being it was filled with sand not explosives.

The retard drilled into a round with powder still in it. He ignited the gunpowder, not the projectile.

How to tell: Look at the primer. If there is not an indentation in it then you are probably holding a LIVE auto-cannon round.

Well, kinda. 20mm is often regarded as part of a group of ordnance in the catagory of "AAA" - Anti Aircraft Artillery.

I think that lamp up above is pretty cool looking. Being a recoiless rifle case, they didn't even have to drill the holes!

We don't know where he drilled into the thing. If he managed to set off all the powder (with or without the help of the primer) and it had been a HE round I'm sure he would have found a way for that to go off too. The guy obviously wasn't a munitions expert or he wouldn't have been drilling into a live round.

2012-04-28 12:10:38 AM
I hope the kid that tried this same thing in my uncle's woodshop class, calls my uncle up and thank him for stopping his stupidity. The kid snuck the round into class because he didn't have his own drill at home.

Find a retired woodshop teacher and you will have a day of stupid stories that will keep you lol-ing for years.
