So the newest foster is starting to learn how to eat big kitty food (the trick is to warm it in the microwave I guess). So I make the mix of canned Friskies and baby food and warm it up. I take the dish into the room where the fosters stay and get him situated so he'll start eating. Once he gets going, I take the trash out to the dumpster. Come back in and he's sitting in the middle of the plate eating. Naturally, the minute I walk into the room, he has to come running over like "look what I did". At least the carpet is easily cleaned :p

Ok, so it's been a looooong time since I've had small kittens. I'd forgotten how nasty kitten farts are! Monday night I let the mewbies sleep with me and once everyone finally settled down this hideous wallpaper peeling odor wafted up. Two of the three bailed out in a hurry so I know who did it. He just kind of looked at me with one of those innocent "what did I do" looks. Here is the guilty party. He even has that "wha'd I do" look in this picture.

When I was in college our dorm mom had a kitten who would do the same thing! She would roam about the lobby, jump up next to you on the couch, snuggle for a few minutes then let one go. We called her "Fart Blossom".

QJ - exactly! Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra, Shaka when the walls fell. I've been pleasantly surprised at how many people have gotten the reference. Even our vet got it when I called. I have the guys scheduled to get their claws trimmed Saturday. They're too small yet for shots so those will have to wait a couple of weeks but my hands can't wait any longer to get the claws trimmed. Usually Mr. YGSS does the trimming but he's not too sure about cutting claws on ones so little. They're only 5 weeks old and so tiny. I've never had them this small, this is fun!

For some reason, people in this area won't adopt male orange tabbys so when I saw them at the kitten nanny (the humane society's bottle baby nanny) I knew I had to take all 3 boys, I couldn't separate them. They're together all of the time. If one gets separated he will cry and the others go find him. I was able to go feed them twice a week from the time they were a week old until I brought them home Saturday.

WMD Kitten Farts...
it seems developing feline GI tracts are notorious for this.

One of my Sainted Vets recommended yogurt (the fancy stuff that has the LIVE cultures innit) to help combat this problem.

I'd give then-baby Raven about a tablespoon of plain yogurt a day and it really cut down on both the quantity and the...er...quality of her emissions.

She prefers Dannon OikosTM, thank you...she turned up her silky little black nose at the ChobaniTM and then 'buried' it.
She's 11 months old now and past the WMD Kitten Fart stage, but she still enjoys (read: 'demands') her plain Oikos yogurt.

I've never tried her on the flavored stuff.
She'd probably eat it, but it has all that stuff that cat tummies aren't designed to cope with, and the whole point of the exercise was to make it less necessary to produce and emit the deadly vapors, not MORE.

Greetings, all... It has been a long day at the brewery.. got the new 80 bbl fermenters in place, will have them ready for use on Monday. Lots of piping and wiring going on.. the newest beer is a Belgian Quad aged in bourbon barrels..coming out as soon as our local ABC folks approve the label...
Scooter is back home.. was having petit mal seizures.. no loss of motor functions.. no cause known at this time.. bunches of tests were done, he's on medications at this time.. my regular vet will be seeing him soon... she will be in her new location in two weeks.. working out of her car at the moment.. Emergency vets are expensive ! But good ! Scooter is getting his regular scent back.. the other cats have stopped hissing and growling at him.. he just ignores them... has anybody checked out the video section.. the cat attacking the automatic food dispenser..from a couple of days ago... LOL..
Saw where Haruko dropped by.. glad to see her posts.. Hope Alien comes around soon.. really miss that gal...
Time to feed the crew and catch some ZZZZ,s.. y'all have a good evening....

Mr. YGSS does that too but these guys are so small that he's nervous about doing it. I'll let the vet get them this time and in a couple of weeks they should be big enough that the Mr will be ok with clipping them. Thanks for the tip though, he usually uses regular clippers, I might go look for the baby clippers.

Gotta brag on my Riktor Pye because I am just so proud of him and his behaviour at the vet's office.
Oh, but he's such a fine clever brave good kitty!

It all started...
(fadeout and harp-like 'back in time' music)

Last time Riktor was at the vet for an ear-cleaning the vet mentioned that he had some plaque buildup on his teeth.
Being a regular denizen of Caturday, I remembered reading about some resident kitties (and goggies) who were feeling so much better after removal of bad teeth...

"Hmmm" I thought. "I wonder if getting Riktor's teeth cleaned NOW might allow him to skip this sort of thing altogether?"
I asked my vet about it. Good idea...except that he would have to be aneth...knocked out for this procedure. Riktor is healthy, hearty and hale...but he is also due to celebrate his 10th birthday this year. Probably a good idea to do a bit of bloodwork first, make sure his heart, liver, kidneys et al are all happy in their work and that being anaeth knocked out won't hurt him.
Bonus: they would also have a baseline for him in the future.

Poor Riktor! The Sainted Vet wanted the tech to hold him instead of me doing so...which may have been why it took them three tries to get enough blood for testing.
He didn't struggle or fight, and the worst thing he said (audibly, at least) was HISSSS...but they were having difficulty in getting enough blood from him.
It was only after I started singing (very softly) to Riktor that he relaxed enough to allow the syringe to do its thang.

Wish they'd have just let me hold him...they probably would have been able to get enough blood first go...and I know it would have been easier for Riktor (this is a completely biased, medically unsubstantiated opinion, BTW).

I promised Riktor that he could ride loose in the car on the way home. He sat next to me and summoned up a tiny little purr.
He allowed me to remove the bright-red vet wrap gracing his silky black forelegs, but the fur on his neck (where they shaved it) is just going have to grow back on its own. Still, he doesn't seem to be holding any grudges...he accepted skritches and was courteous to the neighbor child who wanted to pet him.
I promised him catnip when he came in (even though he already had some this morning)...
and he will get it.
He's probably staying outside because I'm dehydrating spinach, and the white noise of the dehydrator really bothers him; much more so than the other cats who don't seem affected by it one way or the other.

Poor Riktor...it just has not been a great day for him. I'm going to have to make it up to him somehow...

So, it's going to be one of THOSE kinds of threads this week, eh? Above left is 17 year old Dinah, who is a master of the SBD. Since about last Sept. she's had bowel issues, so even her poo is deadly. She stays in my bedroom/bathroom area at night, and she has woken me up when she uses the litterbox in the bathroom, with her foul odors.

TGIC! I hope this will be a happier week. Good to see HH here! Now, where is our little Alien?

Hooray for the mewbies with new homes!

Hi to Haroku!!

My two just got some nip for the first time in a while (I somehow forgot about giving them some on occasion). Both went absolutely batshiat crazy!!! Now Cassie is trying to get up where the nip is kept and has gotten into quite a bit of trouble. It's been a rather trying week... apparently it has been decided (not by us) that the kid doesn't get to come out to visit at all this summer. Incredibly upsetting, but there's nothing we can do to change it. **sigh** Caturday is very much appreciated for making me feel better - Thank you :)

Long Dry Spell nearly 90 min this time since so many are slaving away in Mordor.
Former chorus mate Pat Breeze (part-mother of rescue kitty Gabby) isn't, & just sent this:
"This is a must see for all lovers of animals. It made me tear up because it's so sweet.
Enjoy!"
Link But siddown, because this runs 6:33. It's also another goggie, But That's Perfectly OK!

Had to go home for repair person to install kitchen sink.
Old way: chase cats individually into main sleeping chamber. Time of method for successful mission is generally a half hour.
New way: ring doorbell and the girls instantly hide under the bed, leaving only Sam to deal with. Time of method: 15 seconds. Bonus points: he meets me at the door since he thinks everyone who comes calling is there to see him.

I never could understand why they freak out so when people come to the house. To my recollection nobody has ever killed them.

Nathan is the best at announcing the pizza has arrived. He's tearing through the house looking for a place to hide as soon as they pull in the driveway.

I'm still sharp as one of those little pointy things that you attach pictures and stuff on a wall or a bulletin board, like the ones you make out of corks from wine bottles and maybe put some pretty ribbon to add a touch of color kinda like putting on a necklace with a plain dress, you know like the basic little black dress when you get invited to a cocktail party where they serve those little sausages with those little pointy things that are like long tacks.

Many years ago, while I was still in High School, my mother decided to get adventurous and make nachos for New Year's Eve. As she was assembling the ingredients to begin the nachos, she asked me to get the jalapeno bean dip out of the bag. Dutifully, I looked at, then read aloud the contents of the only two cans left in the bag. One was ocean white fish, I don't remember the other, just that both were fancy feast. It took a few minutes but eventually we realized that the jalapeno bean dip can was the same size as the fancy feast can. And that the plate with the "gooshie cat food" had been cleaned by at least one of our two cats.

Mom had first hand, or is that first nose?, knowledge that Second Hand Rose, our prim and proper long-haired tortishell was certainly a culprit as she let out dainty little poofs periodically, all night long as she snuggled on Mom's lap. I think that was also the last time Mom bought bean dip to make nachos...

Nert's full name is Peanut "Nert" Lapstander (of the Seattle Lapstanders). She's not very smart, her breath smells like low tide, and she is a melodramatic midnight meeper, but her hoomins love her.

Nert shares turf with Jezzy Rezzy McRezzerton (of the Seattle McRezzertons), her more imperious and curmudgeonly counterpart. Jezz for Prez.

but apparently I am missing some 'plug-ins' or something from my computer.

I'm still not 'over it'.

FWIW, I get that sometimes.. as soon as I log in, the 'quotes square' reappears...

RELEASE THE KITTIES

2012-04-28 09:04:53 AM
Times are tough for all of us. My sales are flat due to the economy. Donations to animal charities are down. I do my thing for several dog and horse charities, but it's usually gifts of items that they can sell.

The Newfoundland National Specialty Show is starting Monday in Maryland. I have done the show several times and it's great to see the giants going through their duties to please their owners. I'm unable to attend this year, but on Monday was contacted by a friend who also vends at the shows and she asked me what I had. I had very little merchandise, but worked 17 hours to make her what came out to be 17 pounds of merchandise.

I needed to find something else to make a lucky trio of 17s, (and to give me good karma, bribing the powers so my sales would be good), So I went to paypal and sent $17 to Little Mews since they are overloaded and they are my favorite cat charity.

Not looking for any pats on the back as most of us here help out when we can, but when the numbers came up that way, I had to do something. ( their paypal address is littlemews (at) yahoo (dot) com , and if you send as a gift under "personal" they get 100%.

De-frag ran most of night on my computer, those 2 pix I still wish to bring were still too grainy. Re-scan for at least the 5th or 6th time! Plumbicon heartily suggests re-size 'em to fit myself, but the re-size appears to grainify them too much. We Got Errands to run today, so it may not be a Fully Action Caturday here.

My 4 1/2 year old cat was brought to emerg yesterday becuase he was peeing everywhere :(. No blockage but it could be a urinary tract infection or disease. Or he is just constipated (the xray showed stuff in the colon). He was poked and prodded and we came home last night and gave him morphine and some meds to help him pee. He spent a lot of time in the basement by the litter going inside and outside of it, obviously not proud of himself. Last night he finally crawled into bed and took his meds this morning like a champ. Waiting to hear from the vet :( I really want him to be ok. Took a chunk out of our savings but he's worth it.

My other cat Spirit ate some of his wet food last night. I think she's also nervous about what's going on. She's 10. She threw up twice this morning. They are now both upstairs consoling eachother.

I hope they are both ok :(

today is three weeks since i brought little stevie wonder home..he's adjusted perfectly from his previous life on the street.

Ikinci(my other boy) plays with him and they chase each other around, for the most part they're getting along. every once in a while Iki says ENOUGH and swats him hard then walks away.

my little monkey(the girl) hates the new edition still lol. he comes near her, she hisses and runs. she's not a happy pussy but i have faith that she'll learn to at least accept him in her world.

i'm still waiting to feel patient enough to try and teach myself to post pictures..i'd love to show my kitties off, too!

How sweet, nothing cuter than orange kittens.

The single sweetest, most laid-back and affectionate cat I've ever had was male marble-cake orange tabby with orange eyes. He was a big fella and solid muscle but he had the softest fur I've ever felt on a shorthair and the endearing habit of crawling into your bed and curling up next you you so you'd wake the next morning cuddled up to a purring ball of fur. I sure miss him sometimes....My current lovely is a bit more aloof but incredibly affectionate when she's in the mood. Still not sure what exactly she is because she's the only cat I've ever seen with her color pattern she's a shelter kitty of course). Any of you farkers have an idea?

No buggies at Keeneland. The Red Mile in Lexington has them.

Making a trip to the Mitten State in around 10 days and Keeneland will be a stopover. Will watch the morning workouts with friends, eat breakfast in the track kitchen, then head north.

Keeneland is a wonderful place. We go there and Kentucky Horse Park at least once a year. Johnny enjoys running around in the fields (parking) surrounding the track. They also allow well behaved dogs at the Horse Park. We have to work in Fort Mitchell in October this year, so we'll get there twice this year!!

Did tfa really compare Walmart greeters to foster animals? I mean, ok, snide comments aside, one has a soul and a purpose, and the other is a Walmart greeter.

You ever seen a Walmart greeter kill vermin? Didn't think so. Hell, I'd they did there wouldnt be any customers left.

I've been shiat on by a bird while inside a Walmart. (true story) wouldn't have happened if there were cats on patrol.

I would never pet a walmart greeter, and if I did they would probably be fired for purring.

I recently started a new job, and my Cat Man will NOT let me sleep! I get up super early, and lately he's decided to start bouncing off the walls around 3 am so that I can't sleep anymore. I can't shut them out of the bedroom, because I know they'll claw and cry at the door all night, preventing sleep that way too. Even if you wake up half way just to roll over, he knows it and will start bouncing around the pillows, bonking me in the face with his face, crawling all over... Ugh, I don't know what to do to make him stop and just relax!! He wasn't like this before when I had to get up early, only now!

I doubt that there's anything that can be done about it. It's probably perfectly legal to sell the trap, which can be used to catch any animal of a certain size. Someone setting traps like that would be pretty easy to stop, anyway, once someone's onto them and just starts taking and trashing their expensive traps. Just hope you don't get a poisoner (as happened not far from here a while back). Went on for quite a while, no one ever found out who was doing it, although I was told it eventually stopped when certain people moved away.

Under the listing, if you click "report item" under "category" you can click "Prohibited or restricted item" Under "Reason for Report" you can click "Animals, plants, and wildlife" Under "Detailed reason" click "Animal traps"

Strength in numbers. If we can get some numbers, Ebay will make a business decision and take these inhumane posters off the site.

Done (on two IDs) I'll work on the others gradually.

If anyone else wants to help use the eBay search "coiled spring traps for coyote, beavers, cats, trap, trapping, trap" as it will take you directly to the offending listing:

Specific violation according to ebay is: "The item in this listing is a steel jaw leghold trap with a spread of 5 1/2 inches or bigger with teeth or straight jaws."

Listing states: These traps have 4 springs and a 6 1/2" jaw spread. A favorite for cats and coyotes.

Clearly a violation! Any other eBay members please help. Regardless of the seller's intent (big cats?) a pet could easly be caught in these cruel devices.

gah! That is awful. I am not an ebayer, but I hope that those who are will report these people. Aren't leghold traps banned in most places? Not only that, but what are you allowed to trap by law, unless you are a native american? I dunno, makes me wonder!

reddot: Let's make this Caturday a one to remember.

Fortunately, eBay came to their senses and deleted the original offending posting. Yes, there's more to report, which I did on this one.

Hi Fran! Good on your owner for getting an older feline. Tell us your story! And Welcome!

Happy Caturday to all - this is my first time posting. :-)

Back in 2008, I adopted a cat named Frankie. Frankie came from a foster organization that, sadly, has so much business, it is all they can do to keep the kitties healthy, fed, and housed, so there isn't much time for socialization. So when I adopted her, they warned me that you could not pick her up. I'd had cats before and I knew some of them weren't thrilled about being picked up, so I figured it was just that and I could deal with it.

Well, it wasn't.

You really can't pick Frankie up. It is full blown, "OMG I'M GONNA DIE" scratching, hissing, biting, all the tools in the scared kitty arsenal. Plus, not only was she so scared of being picked up, she didn't allow people to touch her unless she initiated the contact AND you could not touch her in two places at once. If a situation gave her an idea that she was about to be picked up, she beat a hasty exit.

I am partial to grey and white cats, and I wasn't about to return her to the foster. I just decided that I could respect that about her and I'd only pick her up when it was 1000% necessary (vet appointments, etc.) and I wouldn't push her on contact. Everybody deserves to have their boundaries respected, and I don't think animals are any different than the rest of us in that.

So, fast forward to 2012. We (two dogs, Frankie, and I) are moving several states away to help take care of my mom who was diagnosed with lung cancer. I was sweating how I was going to get her into the carrier, how she'd handle 12 hours in the carrier in the car, plus an overnight hotel stay. Was the progress I made with Frankie over the the past four years (now I could,if I did it right, touch her in two places at once, she comes when called, and reports for admiration/cuddles at night when the light is off) going to be wiped out by this trip? I was afraid it would be.

But she surprised me. She went in the carrier by herself (I think she decided going in on her own was better than being put in), and other than some crying when we were going slower than highway speeds (Speed Kitty), she was a rock star. I left her in the bathroom in the hotel and she actually came out for attention when I'd go in to see her. When we got to my mom's, she hid for a few hours but that night, reported for pets like nothing had happened.

Conversely, the dogs spent most of the trip barfing (one in the hotel bed, the other multiple times driving up the New Jersey Turnpike after breaking into his arthritis chews and forcing me to call Poison Control. Why yes, he is a Beagle!).

It has been hard moving up here and dealing with mom's illness, and Frankie provides a reassurance that is...different than the dogs give. Doggie comfort is "Everything's OK, I think, but you should pet me so I'm sure." Kitty comfort is "Duh, I *told* you everything was fine. Now rub the side of my face. No, over here."

Since she is so nervous of strangers, Frank doesn't get the admiration that the dogs get from other people, so I wanted to share how proud I was of her for handling the trip so well. Thanks, Frankie Pants, for being my bestest kitty friend.

Plus, the picture just cracks me up. I took it for a friend so she could see how Frankie was adjusting and she pointed out the writing on the box. It seems the exact opposite of the look on her face.

She was my cousin's friend's cat...he went to Afghanistan and (then Carmella) had nowhere to go...my cousin is allergic and Fran is a very large handful! They were going to dump her at a shelter and at first I was sadly ok with it BUT second thoughts overwhelmed me. She's the sweetest kitty in the world. Needs to be in your face having your utmost attention all day and all night.
I was very hesitant especially since I have an older kitty, I'll post her pretty face too, but the 2 ladies worked it out and now we wouldn't know what to do without her!

Snausages 75 thank you for sharing your story, and YEAH for your awesome kitteh. It takes a great deal of patience to deal with a poorly socialized cat. I know, I am owned by Eli the Bitey Cat. And while he is better, he will still schiz out sometimes and bite/attack.

The mailman is terrified of him. (We had to agree to keep him indoors until the mail has arrived. And even then I give the guy a running start)...

Sorry to hear your Mom is ill, I am sure she will take great comfort in having you and your critters there.

Isn't that the way though? Cats usually work it out, and a younger cat usually becomes subordinate to the older.

Amazing how cats will eel themselves into your life. Didn't know you had that space within you to fill did ya? Yep, it's like that. :)

Got Riktor's bloodwork results...the boy is in great shape except for a slightly elevated globulin (should be '5' and it's 5.1).
Sainted Vet says not to worry- indicates a possible infection/inflammation...and I suspect Riktor got in (read: 'went and picked') a fight a few days ago.
No visible wounds, just his coat was kinda ruffled and he seemed tired.
Riktor seems to think he's got something to prove.
I guess he either won or made his point...

Gonna make the tooth-cleaning appointment next week.
Think I better lay in some more catnip...between apologies, rewards, and 'just cos' we're getting pretty low.

syzygy whizz isn't that the truth? When Eli has been out in the rain his coat is as soft as can be. Too bad you can't bottle that! Although I suppose you could collect it, and warm it up at bath time for kitty....just wouldn't be the same though...

Glad your kitty has a clean bill. I know he won't enjoy having teeth cleaned, but his mouth and the rest of him will be! Besides, I think that the less inflammation in hooman and in kitteh, the healthier the heart and rest of the organs..

I am going to be brushing Eli's teeth tonight, and using the new tooth gel I bought him...hopefully he won't foam....and I won't bleed!

Unfortunately, it takes a lot to get sellers banned. Ebay has it's policies, but they make their $ from successful sales, not the buyers.

I hit your link above with a report.

For anyone wanting to put forth some effort, it's not difficult, and for those without eBay accounts, it's easy to sign up. I've been on eBay for over 10 years, made a ton of $ and have some great finds.

the REPORT button is on the right by the "tabs". Click it, then it will take you to the Report Page
to make it easy, here's the report page with the selections.

Only report those traps with an illegal "jaw spread" of 5 1/2" or larger. The smaller ones should be illegal on eBay, but aren't. One step at a time.

Hello all you fellow cat lovers. Well, someone's black momma cat decided our back acre was the perfect place to have her babies. It took us a few days with a cage trap to catch the momma, and the kitties, but we finally did it. We now have them in our enclosed 6ft x 6ft cat (or dog) kennel we have in the back yard. But we have no idea what to do with them. We already own five rescue cats in our home (all indoor cats, and all fixed updated shots, etc) Any ideas on how to get these ferel cats more calm and what to do with them? Any ideas would be great. Our local no kill places are pretty full of cats, so I think we're on our own. Sucks, but they're so cute. All black too.

Snausages75: Happy Caturday to all - this is my first time posting. :-)

Back in 2008, I adopted a cat named Frankie.

That's an awesome story! I have a cat who's a bit similar - hates to be picked up (she'll wiggly wildly until you drop her), doesn't enjoy petting unless it's on her terms, etc. They both have been on two loooong car rides - once from Ohio to New Mexico, and then just recently from New Mexico to Oregon.

We were just south of Salt Lake City this time and my battery died. I freaked out pretty bad because it was hot, we ended up getting the car to a shop, the smells, the noise, etc. I was more upset that my cats were so confused and scared, since they were relying on me to make everything okay! I ended up taking my little girl out during the next section of the ride and she snuggled with me under my hoodie. It seemed to help calm her down. But in the end, they still appear to love me, or at least love that I still bring them food every morning.

2012-04-28 07:12:27 PM
RadicalEd Wow, what a scary thing! Your cats obviously trust you to make things right, and by taking your little girl out to snuggle with you was just the right thing.

My friends, I would like some advice. Has anyone here ever used a Furminator? The reason I ask is that most of you know that Dragon (while technically a short hair) is extremely fluffy, with very thick fur. While I am used to it, it seems that as he gets older, he seems to be ingesting more than is good for him - I base that on the amount of fur he is excreting, which is obvious when I scoop his litter box.

I have spoken to my vet about this, and since the white boy is already on a daily dose of a stool softener/laxative, I was advised to avoid any type of normal hairball remedy (Petromalt, Laxatone, etc.) and instead just brush him every day. Which sounds simple enough, but Dragon does not like to be brushed. Over the years, I have tried regular cat brushes, those rubber ones, slicker bushes, combs, even human hair brushes, and he is not keen on any of them.

So although I have heard good things about the furminator, before I invest in one (those damn things are expensive, and cash is tight right now), I would appreciate any input. I don't want to clutter up the thread, so feel free to contact me at my login @ gmail.com. Thanks to all in advance, and I apologize for the wall of text.

Finally back after din-din for all concerned.
UpTheIrons66, sounds as if you've become foster-kitty parents in spite of yourselves. Didn't really realize, but that's largely what happened to us 5 yrs ago a wk ago, rather earlier in the cycle. Kittens were just 3-4 days old. Primary thing is, feed momma so she can feed the wee amigos while they need, which may not be much longer from the look of them. They ought not to need more than a single litter box for starters, tho experts will say at least 2.

sherpa18: My friends, I would like some advice.

I used one on Wraggs (dearly departed shephard mix who had a major undercoat). It really took away a lot of her undercoat and cut down on the hair around my house. Just so you know, it is sort of a razor that cuts some of the hair (that I could see at least). I am sure the cat one is different than the other.

For the time being, I'd go with a simple shedding brush rather than the furminator.

What a white cat with a whole lotta fur might look like

BTW, the furminator I had for Wraggs, I sold to a coworker for $10. then 3 weeks later I got 2 dogs...who thankfully have short hair. whew.

sherpa18 you haz mail.

But I will share with the rest of you as well. I use a comb with rotating teeth. You can still get them, but they are listed for dogs. It works on short and long hairs and is nice because it doesn't pull the hair, causing pain. I have learned though that you need to put a wee bit of pressure on it while you comb through the hair, and a bit of an angle, like 30 degrees helps too.

I once had an old style maine coon, with a cottony undercoat. She was gorgeous, but keeping her knot free was a pain until I got this comb. Recommended by a breeder at a cat show, who was impressed by Punkin..she was a tortie tabby in orange, black and cream. Very Zen kitteh. She passed gracefully one night, ten days after her companion. I still miss them. But am grateful to have been owned by them both.

I got one of these last year and all of my cats really like it... none of them particularly hated brushing to start with though. It really is very effective. I bought it from Amazon - they currently have the "Short Hair/Large Cat" (the version I bought) for under $20

reddot: Times are tough for all of us.

Thanks for your donation and for your continued support of our rescue.
Yes, we're filling up with cats and kittens, it's springtime in upstate NY and kittens are being born everywhere!! I've been getting calls to take in more every day.
We've also taken in some cats with weird health issues. We have cats with allergies that need special diet. Luckily some of them have been adopted.
There's a cat with a liver tumor and another missing a kidney. No way to tell what we'll get next.

As always, we rely on donations to keep the rescue up and running. Our vet fees are outrageous. We use over 100lbs of kitty litter every week!!

If anyone wants to donate, paypal is the fastest way to do it. We also need things for the cats, litter pans, L-lysine, kitten food, etc. If you'd likt to donate something from Amazon, here's our wish list Link

And some of our newbies....

Lacey finally had her kittens on Easter Sunday, seven of them!

I use a Zoom Groom on my cats. It gets off a ton of loose fur and best of all, the kitties love it. It's like they're getting a massage. I then use a cat brush to smooth them out and get the last of the fur off them. They really do not like the cat brush though, and I have to chase them and hold them to finish getting the hair off them. I do this every other day and they haven't had hairball problems since.

The furminator has razors in it that cuts the hair so I would think you would still need some kind of brush to remove the loose fur.

Thanks everyone for the advice. We're gonna call around again on monday, cause we found some more no kill shelters in the area (well, about 60 mile radius) so we'll see who can help us. The wife has been handling the kittens pretty well, they seem to like it. And we're gonna go ahead and get the momma cat fixed and let her out after she heals. She's very hissy and pissy. But we don't want her bringing more babies around.

Thanks again.

I have one, and it works great! Extracts loose hair you never knew was there. And go online to buy it, Amazon or somewhere, not a store. I ended up paying something like $8 + shipping for mine. PetsMart wanted $20 or more (I think). It's very rigid, and sort of sharp, so you have to go gently, especially with a thin cat. Good luck!

I have a small garden area out back and found this had survived the winter.

i1230.photobucket.com

Not sure if you can see it, but the leaves are lance shaped, with the base wrapping partway around the stem. The lowest leaves may be as big as six inches long by two to three inches wide. They get smaller as they get toward the top of the plant. I think those are seed pods, long, thin, with two tubes when broken in cross section and resemble small, skinny green bean pods.

i1230.photobucket.com

I did plant Sunchokes out there, as well as potatoes and a number of seeds, but don't remember the varieties. I don't suppose any of you recognize the plant?

But not tonight. It's nearly time for me to say Guten Abend until daylight again. Put stickers on the face just rt of center marking it as such, & it's the one in the younger girls' dining & overnight snoozing room. Now maybe I won;t keep missing the Australia nets on EchoLink. Last one was at 1AM EDT/5AM UTC. Did the math the wrong way, & didn't have the common sense at the time to figure. The Sat late-afternoons are easy, but this one wasn't! Also speaking of amateur radio, I did finnish production & distrib for the Buckeye Burr for the women, today when I bought some more $.01 stamps that I'd run out of.

sherpa18: furminator...

I used one on Cheech (big, furry black Chow Chow), and while I didn't use it as often as I should, I think it worked fantastic! I got the puppy version for Fozzie and (totally different design than the big dog one I had for Cheech... again - I don't use it on a regular basis) even with his thinner coat it really pulls off the loose hair! Granted, both were dog versions, but I'd imagine the results would not be terribly different (I will sometimes use the puppy version on Theo - it came with both a brush and a comb - and he seems to like it okay, and is effective in removing some of the loose fur)... you're right in that they are pricey, so if you can find one discounted on Amazon or eBay, I highly recommend it!

Hi sherpa...

I borrowed a friend's furminator once and while it made almost NO impression on Wimsey's exceedingly thick white coat, I managed to almost completely remove poor Esme's undercoat on her back.
She had a stretch where you could see right through the outer fur down to her skin.
Poor Ezzle-may...
Her undercoat grew back, but I've been told that a cat's fur is 'designed' to come loose very easily...and it's easy to go overboard very quickly with a furminator.

Wimsey likes either a mohair brush, or the flexible rubber business piece of a wig brush that came off the handle...and he LOVES it when I use lavender water on the brush before brushing him.
A damp brush seems to pick up the fur better, and the smell of lavender seems to have a calming, relaxing effect on him. It also leaves his coat glisteny-clean and sparkly.

This reminds me of something that happened with a friend's cat, Fuzzy. He's a bit of an airhead. He bounced across the kitchen to pounce on a packing peanut. After a couple times batting it around, he flung it up in the air, and it landed on his back, right at the base of his neck. He flipped around, then flipped around again, with a "WTF touched me!?" look on his face, then shot out of the room like a fat furry rocket.

Here's a pic. It's not great, but he doesn't hold still much.

*shudder*

Not sure I could take all that paranoia at close range no matter HOW many cool guns I got to check out.

It really wasn't that bad. The convention ran for 4 days and the venue is over 7 acres.

Well, we live in Ohio, so sadly, the lemon tree will have to live indoors (or freeze to death come winter), so it probably won't get too awful much bigger.

Also, I'm not sure how I forgot to post this little story earlier, since it's one of the more major life events I've had. *ahem*

*Begin Technical Gibberish for the Day*

That picture was shot using a Panasonic DMC-TS3 Point & Shoot camera.
While it has 12MPixels, it's a small sensor and a small lens.
It was shot at 5.5mm focal length. That's pretty wide-angle.
That's what causes the distortion.

It's pretty common for P&S users to get close to the subject, then "go wide" so the
shot isn't too close in the camera. Unfortunately, that causes some interesting
distortion in the final picture (such as big hands, shrunken heads, little feet, etc.).

Maybe they are going through a period of adjustment. ALL cats are finicky as I'm sure you already know. NONE of the cats that have ever owned me have liked expensive food, for example. The Princess will not eat gushy food or any treats, only dry food.

We used a Furminator and it does a great job on denser and coarser cat hair. I have a short/medium hair cat with a coarse texture and she looooooves the thing. I also have a medium hair cat and a long hair cat with super fine almost rabbit fur texture. I think the furminator grabs and pulls the hair too much on the fine hair so they dont like it as much, especially if i am not super gentle and careful not to brush skin.

Good Meowning! Happy Bunday.

Doomsday Aardvark congrats on the new house. Go forth and build equity...Besides it is nice to be able to control what goes on in your home. My advice? Change the locks and add keyed deadbolts. And, when you can, replace windows. Our home was built in 1923, and new windows have made it a very comfy place to live! :)

What_would_jimi_do perhaps your cats are picky because they are still mourning the loss of he other cat.mIt does happen. Give it time. And give yourself permission to mourn as well. Your cat was an important part of your life. (hug)

Hello caturday! What an eventful week here at the inky house. On Monday I went out to get some groceries and on the way home I saw a man throw a little black kitten out of his car into traffic at about 50 mph. I slammed on my brakes, abandoned my vehicle, ripped off my shirt and threw it over the kitten. After scooping it up I floored it home. It had a bloody nose, two different size pupils and was crying. I was in hysterics. I cleaned it up, called the fur baby er and took it out there. By some miracle, it only sustained some bruises and a pretty good bump to he head and some hemmoraging in the eye. She will make a full recovery :) We have named her kiki, and she is now running about, getting into everything and purrs up a storm. She is 4 weeks old and weighs a pound. We will be fostering her until we find her a home. I am just so glad she made it. I was unable to get a liscence plate number on the jerk who abused her but I remember his vehicle. If I ever see him again he will be lucky to walk away with all of his limbs.

I hope everyone is having a good week! I missed you all!

Had to take Shadow back to the vet. Best decision ever. He apparently was 90% blocked :( $3,000 later, and he is still in emerg getting his bladder flushed to make sure it's clear and healthy. Apparently he is grumpy and pulled his IV out, but has left his catheder in and is going pee on his own again. I'm so happy but sooooooo worried. The vet assures with a change of diet this hopefully shouldn't happen again (the food we will change him on can dissolve the crystals apparently). They are keeping him until tomorrow night because there is a 15% chance of re-blocking.

I hope he is ok. I'm so friggin worried. Spirit is unusually quiet today. She's been laying on anything that smells like him and has been playing with all his toys :(

Wow...sorry to hear about Shadow. Unfortunately, we are very experienced with urinary blockages. Cooper blocked once before we got him from the rescue group and has blocked twice on us since we've had him. Both times he blocked on us, he was in the hospital for almost a week. You may find that they keep Shadow in the hospital a little longer than one more day and even once you get him home, there is a chance for re-blockage for about 2 weeks.

A change in diet is essential. Coop is on a special diet and although he didn't really like it at first, it's sort of grown on him. Even with the diet, he still gats UTI's so we have to watch him very carefully. Keeping Shadow well hydrated will help too, We have several water bowls scattered around, including one Drinkwell fountain and another that aerates the water to entice him to drink more.

Stress can be another trigger for blockages. Keeping his life as stress free as possible will help immensely. Cooper has issues in this area. He has social anxieties and can be very jumpy at times. He is on medication to help alleviate that. It helps but doesn't totally take the anxiety away.

Here are a couple of good articles. One is specific to blockages and the other is an article on cystitis. Good luck with Shadow. I hope the diet change works and that you (and he) don't have to experience this again!

CDK, tnx for the math, which I'm constitutionally unable to do. The .22 acres translates to inside of Hara. I sought total footprint for the place. Q_J says *huge*, & that's just about right. Q_J also doesn't have to bring in a vat or 2 with supplies to set up an indoor booth, as I do, as I seem to live closest. Plumbicon normally favours paying $10 to park in the lot next to one of the now-closed car dealerships across the road. We have done shuttle from what used to be Salem Mall in yrs past, as Q_J says. Also from another shopping ctr even furr-ther away that's also since closed.

I am so sad that I missed out on Caturday this week.

It has been a nightmare week for my daughter and I. It started with my daughter having a bad reaction to a new migraine medication. That put her on two days of bed rest.
Then I lost the apartment that we were going to be moving into. I am getting out of a bad marriage and don't have much credit. The apartment manager kept requiring more and more money then a cosigner. When I couldn't come up with it I was out of a place to live.
Then I took a fall, flat on my back onto concrete.
I have severe asthma which has been flaring everyday which has left me swollen and on oxygen.
Then I got a nasty email from my husband's attorney trying to intimidate and scare me, which knocked me out emotionally. I lost a day from that, as in I must have blanked out emotionally. My daughter says that I stayed in bed crying and shaking. Then some bit of strength came to life in me. I got up, got dressed, checked the ads, found another apartment, went out and applied, got accepted and will be moving in on Monday.
Right now I am in the bathtub trying to soak my back so I can get a little strength to pack a few more things. I just have to survive and then I can live.

Why do I refer to it as Butter's car? Whenever she gets the chance, she jumps into the shotgun seat and is ready to go....

Stay well and take care of yourself. Good luck!

inkydoo: Hello caturday!

People are just jerks sometimes, I weep for our species.

This is how we got Meep, thankfully they slowed the vehicle down before they threw her out but still. They're loss, she's a sweetheart, when she's not farting on you!

Tristaria: Had to take Shadow back to the vet.

I can relate to the worry, but he's in the right place. They're taking good care of him and they know what to watch for. I'm sure he'll be fine.
If he were my cat I would probably worry more if he were home at this point.

I don't have an attorney. His company has a program where he pays a small fee every month and he is given an attorney at no cost. No attorneys are provided to the spouses and I have no money for one, and no money to go to court and get attorney fees. I am having to go through this on my own. /oh, and I use a scooper for that. My poo flinging = scooping out the cat box. ;3

I have actually flung poo myself. I had a neighbor with a yappy little dog across the street when I was going to college and lived in a trailer park (hey, it was cheap) . Said neighbor would let the dog out and he would come over and crap in my yard or driveway. I would take my cat litter scoop and scoop up the poo and throw it at their house. It worked for me. One time, I got home from a night class and stepped right in a pile next to my car. I tip toed up to their front door and wiped the poo off of my shoe with her welcome mat, then rang her door bell. As I was finishing up wiping the poo on her welcome mat I told her that I better not catch her dog in my yard again. It was her responsibility to let it poop in her yard so she could clean it up.

I am so sorry you are having such a sucky week. Hopefully you will have a much better week once your move is done and you are both in your new place. One thing I would suggest is to try an ice pack on any sore spots you may have tonight. Sometimes it helps calm muscles down better than heat does. Take care!

Unfortunately, ANY car that is not under warranty can do that. I put mine away back in '03 due to a harsh winter and she would not pass inspection. So we put the "repair" money as a down payment on a new, used car and the bird was put in the garage. Well... 9 years later, the now used new used car is starting to need a lot of work (new or rebuilt motor). So I am trying to bring the bird back to life.

Thanks for the well wishes. His nurse says he is ok. He still hasn't eaten, but they aren't too concerned about that yet seeing he's really stoned. His still had blood this morning, there was a little less this afternoon so that's good. His red cell levels dropped but they think it's because of the bleeding in his bladder, which is getting better so his red blood cells should be going up soon. The tests on Friday had everything normal, it's just the test today that showed the decrease, so it's pretty much assured it's jsut because of the bleeding in his bladder which should lighten up. He is warming up to some of the nurses and is wearing a cone so he doesn't pull his cath out.

Keeping my hopes high, my Husband is getting a 3rd litter tomorrow so we can have one on each floor while he heals. Don't know how to keep his stress down as he is a jumpy cat and he loves to play with my older cat. The vet sad to just do what I can, they can't help the fact he is the way he is.

What have I learnt from this? To buy pet insurance. We're going to do that tomorrow night.

in2it, wish to Fang Q for the hint re imgur for pix fixin, as TinyPic's been doing me wrong (just not all the time). Replaced Edit choice after Go To Full Size with Tweet This, which is of zilch use to me. Not using imgur exclusively yet, only for pix that are too big for Fark to automagically re-size for me. Also the Chair for 2 depictured, already forgot what it's called, was in a link my spouse Plumbicon furr-nished to me & I fetched here, maybe yesterday.
May's well say now, I'll be absent a great deal of tomorrow afternoon, as Pl's scheduled for a colonoscopy. Not a convenient day, but are they ever? At least they didn't give him Thu May 10 at 2 PM, when we're meant to be getting mobile toward Ottawa, capital of Oh Canada, for our older niece Ellen's Sat May 13 wedding. Andre, the SO, has been owned by a number of cats, not usually more than one at a time. Our favourite Vet tech will come in to mind the mob here; we'll get both her & my chorus dir (rescuer of a young cat a few months ago) A Wee Something up there to fetch back.

sherpa18: My friends, I would like some advice. Has anyone here ever used a Furminator?
just brush him every day.

I had a long haired cat who didn't care for brushing so I read about and tried just stroking him with rubber gloves on. The gloves catch a fair amount of surface and loose hair altho you won't be able to get down to the underfur.

I also found some success with a brush that had a razor blade sideways behind a wall of wide-set teeth (or maybe the teeth had a blade edge?) so that as you brush it cut at the same time which combined with using the gloves meant a significant amount of hair coming off that body. It was a long time ago so I don't totally recall the brand or exact design. And, since I just have 3 DSH strays now I no longer face those kinds of issues.

thanks for posting the pic of Wimsey and Raven doing interpretive napping.
It's one of my favorites.

Re: cats can be persnickety finicky...

So Raven and I went to work last night as usual...and as usual I brought a can of gushyfud for her dinner. She seems to enjoy the Fancy Feast fancy-stuff line (various meats done 'Tuscany', 'Primavera' or 'Florentine' style- and twenty cents more per can).
For some reason last night I brought two cans instead of one...and it's a good thing I did.

Accompanied by Raven's usual "Feed me, I'm starving and haven't eaten in weeks" song and dance,
I put down Chicken Florentine. Raven dove right in, then hesitated...and then commenced burying it. Unacceptable, in other words.
OK, let's see what the other can was. Oh dear...Yellowfin Tuna Florentine.
Well, it's what I have to work with...

Take 2...Raven sings and dances, and I put down the bowl (after repeatedly lifting her down off the counter when she jumps up).
This time there was no problem...let the snarfing commence!

She finished up the tuna mix in about 3 hours (which is normal), but the chicken offering just sat there until it was time to go home and I cleaned it up.

Note to self: Raven doesn't like chicken-flavored gushyfud...even when it comes in a fancy sauce.
Probably best to just stick with fishy stuff, right?

GGracie: [farm5.staticflickr.com image 640x425]

I wish there was a "strength" vote button. I wish you strength, and I feel for both the migraines and the asthma knocking the get-up-and-go out of you & your daughter.

I have a version of the furminator: Felix is ok with it on his back and sides but not anywhere else. Princess Mia of the Sharp Bitey Teeth wont let me near her with a brush at all.

However, both of them absolutely love it if I run my hands under the tap, do a sketchy pat dry so my hands are a little more than damp, and then pet them. The first few swipes don't do much but then it gets out quite a bit of fur. (They think it's a treat on par with catnip/butter/smoked chicken.)

2012-04-30 10:45:48 AM

Late getting back here, yet again.
We don't need to Furminate the resident Maine Coons (3), but all are amendable to being brushed, copiously when required. After all, it is more attention for them! All including diabetic Ginger are occasionally offered inexpensive catnip toys from the vet clinic, but he of course shouldn't have either butter (or the butter substitute Pl & I use) or smoked chicken, which even we 2 don't get unless I make a point of buying some.

I walked in the building and security wanted to know where I was parked. He then tells me that's the employee section, and sometimes the visitors cars get damaged there (keyed/dinged) if it is not a Chrysler product. He asked what I drove, so they could keep an eye on it. When I said a 74 Pontiac Catalina, he smiled and said..."Them boys won't mess with it. It's a real American car. They just don't like imports"

I dunno, I drove a Buick Electra as a wee teen. Now that was a car! That I had to sit on a pillow to clear the dashboard, that earned the shortness of stature rating on my license, (I am 5'2") that had me take my parallel parking test multiple times..until I used my Dad's Cutlass...it was shorter by that magic 6 inches..that probably saved my arse by being faster than the rest of the traffic idjits...

Meanwhile my 6'5 bro drove the VW Beetle..

Nice Job! Thanks! :o)

Am I old if I consider that 74 Pontiac as one of the 'newer' Pontiacs? I'm only 53???

What the hell...nothing else is going on. May as well ramble.

I had a 66 Impala SS prior to the Lincoln (I have pics in profile). I restored it to it's hot rod glory but it was just a little too radical for leisurely drives. The big boats are more my speed. As soon as I found the Lincoln I sold the Impala and scooped it up.

My favorite boat was a 65 Montclair (not mine pictured...same car but mine was green). It was bigger than the Lincoln by at least 20"...about 21 feet long. I put the back window down and carried a 12' roll of carpet without it hanging beyond the trunk. It wouldn't fit in my garage and I could only get it into a friend's two car garage by pulling in at an angle. I had some goooood times with that car. Ran like a champ but I couldn't keep the frame together.

58,000 gas guzzling miles. The car weighs 5,500 Lbs. and has a 462 with a four barrel. I never did calculate gallons per mile...been too ascared. :o)
I can't really afford to drive it much anymore. I have the timing retarded (which eats more gas) and it still pings like a jackhammer on anything less than premium. I won't use lead additives or octane boosters, they just make things worse in the long run. I might sell it and get back into old VW beetles or something a bit more economical.

This!
I'm on parole for 12 1/2 more hours before I have to return to Mordor.
Fortunately I have Caturday and alcohol to make it tolerable.

I get to sit in a windowless room tomorrow, and supervise Middle Schoolers who are in trouble..oh joy.

Holy Mother of Pearl!
I don't envy you at all! I can't stand the little &%#$**'s when they're across the street, never mind being cooped up in a class room with them.
/ear plugs and a big stick!

They all think I am that nice sub they see in the class room. Until I lay dwn the law. The Assistant principal likes me to sub this job, because I can usually keep them in control. But oy! A looong day!

Am I old if I consider that 74 Pontiac as one of the 'newer' Pontiacs? I'm only 53???

Just WTF is going on this week?!?!?!?!?!?!

1) I'm not far behind you at 47
2) 82 year old neighbor says "I didn't know you were that young"
3) Checking out at the grocery store...grocery bagger: "Do you need a cart, Sir?" Nah, I'm fine. Second bagger walks by: "Do you need a hand out. Sir?" **GAHHHHHH** No thanks! Have a nice day!

I get stuff like that at times and I hate it, but sadly the only choices are acceptance or depression. What the hell, it's just part of the journey.

Goodnight all.

yobbery: John Buck 41: yobbery: While we're on the subject, this is my current sweetheart. I just need to do a little work on the rear resonators and she'll be back to her old silent self.

/the trunk alone easily seats four.

How many miles on her?

58,000 gas guzzling miles. The car weighs 5,500 Lbs. and has a 462 with a four barrel. I never did calculate gallons per mile...been too ascared. :o)
I can't really afford to drive it much anymore. I have the timing retarded (which eats more gas) and it still pings like a jackhammer on anything less than premium. I won't use lead additives or octane boosters, they just make things worse in the long run. I might sell it and get back into old VW beetles or something a bit more economical.

...and a cat

58k miles on a 45 y/o car? Holy crap.

Sorry I have not been around as much as I would have liked, but once again RL is intervening *sigh*

Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry regarding the furminator, both in the thread and via email, your input is greatly appreciated - and Dragon is thrilled that the popular opinion seems to be... NO.
And on that note,

It's prom season, with wedding season quick to follow. That means I get to read Caturday in between working on dresses.

My boss for the last 6.5 years has decided that since I'm trying to get my own alterations business going during the off-season, she'd like me to work contract for her instead of hourly. That means I don't have to go into her shop except for wedding gown fittings. I get to do all other fittings in my own shop, sewing either at home or at my shop.

One of the upsides of this is the ability to visit Caturday during my I-can't-stand-it-I-need-a-break times. At the bridal shop, there's no way for me to browse the internet during my breaks. (my phone is a phone, not an internet browsing device)

If you want to check out my projects, go to: My Site (pops)

Here's Penny helping me check out a set of cushions:

*Slight threadjack*

Today I got myself some actual, gen-u-ine Kitty Lovin'!!!

There's a neighborhood calico wandering around.
She has a collar, but I don't know where she lives or who she lives with.
All I can tell you is that she was walking across the yard from the house to the north toward the
house on the south.

I did a "Here kitty-kitty" and made a sound kind of like a momma cat makes to kittens,
and she walked right up the steps onto the porch and came over to me.

I honestly haven't gotten to pet a cat in over 10 *years*.
She let me give her skritches, rubs, petting, and she gave me head bumps and rubbed
against my legs. I was dumbfounded!

I just had to tell somebody.
