What the hell do I need a computer with a Intel i7, Nvidia card, and high speed internet for, Mitt? I guess I can dust off those old Hustler, Penthouse, and Playboy subscription cards. You think those prices are still good?

LouDobbsAwaaaay: Mitt Romney loves job-killing regulations.

but this is job creation.... the hundreds trying to figure out and actual way of doing it, the thousands trying to exploit it, the 10's of thousands working out how to profit from it, the hundreds of thousands trying to figure out work-a-rounds, the millions of Chinese, putting some some new chip on the board...

It's just me, but personally I don't want the government telling me what hardware I have to have installed on my pc. There are certain components that are required for it to work. Beyond that, if I want to install a piece of hardware, it's my choice.

Now all of a sudden a "small government Republican" says he wants to force every pc to have specific, government mandated hardware in it. Tell me how that's not restricting my choices.

I don't really bother looking into blocking sites but don't they have software already that allows you to set up a black list or a white list?

LouDobbsAwaaaay: sno man: If you want to keep the kids from the lead, you might want to ban every house/apartment built before the mid 70's. Turn EVERY American city into Detroit.

ReapTheChaos: You get some impressionable young teenager watching that stuff and he's going to grow up with some pretty messed up ideas about sex.

Actually, no. I was raised on the internet, in a big city, and developed research skills at a young age. Believe me, I saw EVERYTHING as an impressionable teenager. EVERYTHING. And I think, as human beings go, I am on the well-adjusted side. If there was some internet dose-response freakiness thing I should be able to only get off on things at least as odd as tub girl and g0at ese by now, but more likely couldn't come without watching naked hermaphrodite dwarfs vomiting cockroaches into a man's ass while an incredibly fat woman drives spikes through his dick, and yet... it turns out I just kind of have a thing for sexy people, and find most of humanity's zanier and most disturbing kinks rather amusing.

adamgreeney: cman: Not to burst his bubble, but parental controls are already built into modern day OSes. Self regulation, motherfarker, how do you like them apples, shiathead?

Yeah, I generally laugh at the sheer idiocy you crap into these threads, but yeah. You're 100% right. Things like Net Nanny and Bess have been around since the mid 90's. It isn't the governments job to watch what your kids see when they surf.

Old and busted: magic underwear
New hotness: magic computer technology

buckler: Yeah, good luck with that. At one science museum I worked at, they had a publicly-available internet kiosk, running with filtering software. I entered into an ongoing competition with the exhibits department to see if I could access porn on it, and they tried to keep upgrading the filter to prevent me from doing so. I was able to access porn 100% of the time, regardless of what they did, until they restricted access to what was essentially an intranet. They eventually took the thing out, citing it as "insecure".

bobbette: 9beers: sno man: So, okay how does your 'puter v-chip tell if that jpg is a cat in the ceiling or something that's gonna lead to the death of a kitten?

The only way to adequately block adult material would be to make it mandatory for those sites to use the .xxx domain.

Now, that's not true. Why, back in the day I used to look at "adult material" (boobs!) on this very website, when I was still a minor. Of course this was back in oh-dickety-two or oh-dickety-three.

But my point remains. You can get porn of anything, anywhere, on the internet, at any time. Which is why the only real filter is adult supervision.

Fark didn't host the content, it redirected you to the site. A xxx filter would have blocked it.

To me it's more like not understanding what has already existed and has been widely available for what might as well be forever in computer terms. Is there any parent out there who could buy a computer but between administrative privilages, basic monitoring and filtering software (if necessary), and just being a parent who is present and interested in their children's lives find hemselves unable to guide their children to a responsible lifestyle.

9beers: Nadie_AZ: parents must be the answer

So what's your plan for controlling a kids TV and internet use? Should you lock up all electronics when you're not home? Should you not allow them to have a computer or TV in their room? It's ridiculous to say that even the best parents can monitor what their kids are viewing on a TV or computer 100% of the time.

I let my oldest kid- the distaff- have a computer in her room. She's 13, and she knows that any time I walk in the door, the rule is "hands up and off the keyboard".

All I need to do is walk in on occasion. The rest pretty much takes care of itself.

Oh, and I did block a few key terms to her MAC address with the router's firmware, just to be on the safe side. She'll probably see some pR0n, and that's OK- 13-year-olds are supposed to. But, for the most part, she'll be blocked from the really bad.

Parenting is about realism. Mitt needs to learn that. So do a lot of posters in this thread.

You do realize in Internet Explorer you do have the ability to block what ever content you want already don't you? Installing a chip or program into every computer is just going to lead to a bunch of conflicts and headaches with other programs and sites. The ability to keep your kids from porn is already out there and has been built into many browsers for years. You, just like Santorum, just need to do some research before you open your mouth.
