Everyone knows that the best way to make people stop using a meme is to publicly ask them.

Further, the photo itself appears to have been lifted not from the website of a support group, but rather from a book published by Liz and Steve Crowter called Surprise Package: When God Turns Your Life Upside Down's.

So having a chuckle at a silly picture of a disabled kid (in the same way we laugh at a silly picture of basically anyone) makes us evil, says jackass parent exploiting a disabled child for profit.

Thanks, man, I'll be sure to treat your opinion with the respect it deserves.

Heidi herself has been recently informed of her unwitting celebrity

Uhm. Why?

I guess my question, given that she's severely disabled, and probably constantly supervised, is who was the dick that told the girl about the meme? That seems pointlessly ruthless.

Ha...I was thinking the same thing. She was probably 100% oblivious to it until they asked for her reaction to it...morans.

Yep. As much as anyone who uses that meme is a complete douchebag, whoever told the disabled girl that she was being ruthlessly mocked on the Internet because she's disabled is an even bigger waste of skin.

Yeah.. bleat on all you want about "this is the internet - that's how we roll, lol" , but at the end of the day you're still making fun of a handicapped child. Seriously.. what the hell is wrong with people?

It doesn't make it right but when you put anything in view of the public (and lets be honest here almost nothing is private) it's best to expect that it's going to be treated like this. The best way to survive in the modern world is to grow thicker skin.

a) Streisand effect. I hadn't seen this meme in a while...

b) As soon as you post a picture on line, especially on an open website, it belongs to the world. You have to assume that there is a possibility that it will be copied and used for less than appropriate purposes. Don't want this to happen? Don't put your kid's pic on the internet.

c) Yes, the meme is in bad taste. Welcome to Fark the internet. It's not a nice place.

Heidi herself has been recently informed of her unwitting celebrity, and is reportedly "very upset."

Why would you tell a girl with Downs' something like that? That's almost abuse in itself.

"These trolls are cowardly, nasty people who should be punished for the damage they are doing to people with their comments," she says.

So free speech should be punished. Got it.

Don't worry, it's an old meme that we can pretty much ignore. It's about as old as planking, and no one planks anymore.

That's the thing about people and freedom's... when you're accused of something you want all your rights, privileges and immunities. It's pretty universal, but there is a significant number of people who deny those very same rights to others if something even the least bit unpleasant happens to them. And if it's tragic? They may as well have never heard of the rights in the first place.

Sad but true. I don't agree with 99% of what is said on the internet, but I'll defend trolls and such to the end if that's what it takes to keep safe the rights of everyone else. Such is life.

FTFA:"These trolls are cowardly, nasty people who should be punished for the damage they are doing to people with their comments," she says. "They have no right to take Heidi's image and use it alongside these cruel sites."

Well, you may be right about the trolls, but I think you're wrong that they don't have the right, at least in the United States.

IANAL, but I seem to remember in my Media Law class in College, once they published a book about the kid, and included photos in the book, Heidi became a Public Figure. The sames rules do not apply to the use of her image as a private citizen. She could try arguing that the unlicensed use of the image from the book is causing some sort of financial damage, or causing lost sales, or something along those lines I suppose, but that would be a hard sell.

Anyone know the rules on this in the UK (and the US assuming I'm wrong, which I may be)?

/oh, and the sister in the video is cute

The video in the article says they did. Once they started getting litigious and trying to get people to take the images down the figured they couldn't hide it from her, so they told her.

Yes it is in bad taste, and I can't believe someone took the time to explain to her that people were mocking her, but are they 100% sure it is the same girl?

So, I just googles the sister's name and I got her Twitter (now private) facebook (private) google+ (empty) a friends FB which references her, and some website with her name, address and phone number, as well as the name of her relatives.

This was all on the first page of google.

If they're rattling the 4chan cage, they better be prepared for whats coming their way. If I can find all that in 15 seconds, I fear for that /b will come up with

Pretty spot on, wouldn't you say? She was once an anonymous face floating around the web. No one wold have known or even cared. Now you put a face and name to it and make things even worse for this poor girl. You people forget, TROLLS ARE RUTHLESS!!!

THIS THIS and MORE THIS
BY being an attention whore, we can now update the meme.

"My mom is an attention whore"
"fark MOM, why did you have to out me??"

when does the mom and daughter (without her consent) start doing the talk show circuit??
Today - internet memes and the people they hurt. First up, the potato girl!!

It's been years since that pic was taken. Her hair is a completely different color. No one would ever have connected the two, until you did it for them. GREAT JOB, MOM! You think she was a meme before...
