This is a repeat, but for the life of me I can't find the other thread.

Isn't this the point of screenings? To gauge reaction?

These is why operations do soft-openings. People complain about soft openings but those same people would complain if something isn't perfect day 1.

Pretty sure this is The Hobbit still in beta.

This isn't the same article... Its more explanatory than the other... I get what the complaint better in this one.

That's interesting. I read somewhere else (can't remember where) that the footage looked good - almost too good.

people don't like the 3D. it doesn't matter what the FPS level is... 3D looks like crap. they don't like it when it makes ths screen fuzzy and they don't like it when it looks incredibly clear.

i know sony and LG et al have staked their entire companies on selling super expensive 3d TVs and that the studies love screwing their customers with 20 dollar 3d tickets, but GIVE.IT.UP.

It makes my brain tired. Evidently trying to process extra 3D information on top of the 3D information my eyes are already providing is taxing on the visual cortex. And it doesn't really add anything to the movie, except for some ViewMaster nostalgia.

I love 3D.

But I'm usually not a fan of higher frame rates for the exact reasons mentioned in the article. It looks like I'm watching a stage play (somehow)....which although great in their own rights, are not always the appropriate medium for a movie.

Now, this may just be a cultural thing. We may have been watching movies for so long at the current rate that we are having trouble adjusting to the new frame rate. It could be "right" and still "look wrong". The human brain is weird like that sometimes.

It would be interesting to see if repeated exposure to the new frame rate would result in the brain "adjusting" to it and having the new frame rate look "right" instead. We might find that after adjusting to it, the older frame rate movies remind us more of the old black and white movies from the turn of the century where the frame rate was so fast it was occasionally jerky and weird. It didn't bother people back then, but it would sure as heck bother us now.

Edit: I love 3D...but it sometimes gives me headaches. Hoping that changes!

/maybe the new frame rate will?

I had not heard that The Hobbit was going to be ruined by 3D.

I am ...a little... disappointed.

I'm curious on the new frame rate. I'm certainly not going to knock the movie or Peter Jackson for breaking new tech ground.

What content out there is at 48fps that you've experienced?

3D is optional as is the 48FPS. Plan on seeing it 2D at 24FPS myself

He screened it again today? Jeebus, what's wrong with Peter Jackson?

scarmig: I'm curious on the new frame rate. I'm certainly not going to knock the movie or Peter Jackson for breaking new tech ground.

It's not new technological ground.

Yes, the 24 fps was originally the result of technological limitations resulting from sync sound. But filmmakers and audiences find the choppy look to be aesthetically pleasing, so they've stuck with it. People have tried to adjust a higher frame rate for decades, but it's never gone anywhere. One of the big reasons for the movement now is 3D -- 3D works better with a higher frame rate.
