They're design patents. They only protect the specific look of the pasta. Big whoop.

Exactly. I assumed these were patentable (except common ones, which pre-date packaged pasta entirely).

But yeah, pasta shaped like a unique cartoon character... I'd assume patents are the way to protect against a competitor doing likewise.

Nothing to see here.

Years ago a manufacturer wanted a new pasta design and contracted with a designer from Ferrari for it. I have no doubt something like that would be patentable. You're not going to spend that kind of cash and have Chef Boyardee just steal your design.

hookworms?

Also as well as trademarked shapes like cartoon characters and the like, there are other pasta shapes that were... well engineered to fit certain needs, like say, sauce retention.

I found a couple utility ones, but they're methods for manufacturing the shaped pasta product and have nothing to do with the shape itself.

On the good side of things, patents do run out, unlike copyrights which seem to get extended each time a certain corporation's early portfolio is about to enter the public domain.

EngineerAU: On the good side of things, patents do run out, unlike copyrights which seem to get extended each time a certain corporation's early portfolio is about to enter the public domain.

Not surprising, honestly... For every big money company holding a patent, there's another big money company waiting for it to expire.
Copyright? Less so... The people most interested in seeing stuff go public domain are people who don't want to pay for things. They tend to be less able to lobby Congresscritters.

I guess you could always make the pasta taste better than any supposed clones from Chef Boyardee, but that would be way too much trouble. Much more profitable to fire your R&D staff and hire a few more lawyers.

If you can get pasta to look like that, you could get a utility patent as well as a design patent. And probably a Nobel.

/Provided it didn't cause the universe to implode, of course.
