Housing is dirt cheap now. Also, crazy attracts.

Hell yeah, there's only going to be 6 hurricanes this season to have to live through... not all of them can possibly hit Florida. Might as well move there myself!

The 1950 census counted 2.8 million Florida residents. By 2000, the population had swelled to 16 million.

Thanks air conditioning!

what the hell does Barnum have to do with it? Why would people want to move to a place with weather like Florida? Sunshine and beaches?? Who wants that?

Oh yea, almost everybody.

Arizona must be next, then. It's thisclose to getting its own Fark button.

hmm...mild weather (occasional hurricane not withstanding), beaches, low taxes....unemployment rates that aren't totally out of whack with the rest of the country (mostly)...yeah, can't imagine what would draw people there...

I'd bet money that the Lex Luthor is trying to pass a law in which you must be drug tested before you can move to Florida.

Barnum never said there was a sucker born every minute and you're a sucker for believing that he did. You also prove correct the clever person that actually did say it.

Dear Florida,

You're so welcome. We have renewed our efforts to palm our craziest and most violent people off on you. They like orange juice. But don't give it to them after midnight.

Sincerely,

The United States of America, with the exception of Arizona

Thanks, jerk!

Florida sucks. It's hot, there are bugs, lots of old people, wayyy to many NY/NJ transplants, scary brown people, scary rednecks and worst of all deadly Hurricanes that can strike at any time.

You wouldn't like it, trust me. Move to Seattle instead. Please.

"Domestic Migration" (the number of people who move into a state minus those who move out) is an interesting number which can have some use in comparing differences for one particular state over the years.

However it may not be particularly applicable in comparing different states.

A lot of retirees move to Florida and then after not too many years die, which doesn't count as leaving the state.

I have been here in Florida eight years. Trust me, do not move here, stay away, your life depends on it. If the rattlesnakes don't get you, the no seeums, gnats and mosquitoes will. Or the neighborhood watch patrols will shoot you.

Factoid: 15 retirees are flown in a coffin out of Florida every day.

What Florida do you live in? I grew up there and the climate is like a moldy shvitz for 7 months out of the year.

ok, ok...relax...I admit my sample size is fairly small, as I've only been to Florida a half dozen times or so over the last 10-12 years and always during Nov/Dec. During those trips (Orlando, Ocala, and Daytona separately), the weather was always pretty damn close to perfect...and i assumed the weather in Miami/Tampa/other southern areas was fairly mild. I can see the northern reaches being hot and humid (also been to Georgia in July, so I can definitely relate), but figured that was mostly because of the distance from the water.

You must be Drew's account, in a transparent attempt to get more board topics and traffic.

If the current population isn't grandfathered in the state will be empty.

Low taxes? Sure Florida doesn't have an income tax, but every other tax is sky-high to make up for that. Hell the base sales tax alone is 6% and after county surtaxes are added on, it can be as high as 9.5%. Floridians pay more in taxes to their state and local governments than any other SE state.

Yeah, the weather's kind of nice in the winter, but it's freakin' miserable in the summer. If you like over-developed, crowded beaches, there's that.

Florida's current unemployment rate is 9.4%, one of the highest in the country. It's housing market is in a shambles, which is one of the reasons emigration into has picked up. One can buy a shack or a trailer there rather cheaply right now.

Florida is terrible....terrible ....stay away. The dieseases on the beach....ewww...just keep driving.

2012-04-26 05:54:12 PM
I hate the beach. It's wind, the sand is hot and sticky, the water is dirty and smelly. There are so many people making so much noise and being so disgusting. You'll be finding sand for a month, even if you're really really careful. Worse than that are the beaches that are just rock instead of sand. Sharp, pokey rocks. Besides, it's probably hot when you go so you're sweltering and sweating around a whole bunch of other sweltering and sweaty people. Blech. Miserable, miserable way to spend time. You can keep them beaches, Florida. Have no fear, this nutjob won't be joining your ranks.

Get a kick outta all the Florida comments.....obviously there are quite a few states more deserving of their own Fark button....buit they wouldn't recognized how their state is spelled

Years ago when my parents moved back to Va from FL, their FL neighbors told them they were "lucky to escape".
