I've only known a handful, and they were odd. Extremely bright, but really awkward.

Even better, within about a semester of college, most of those sheltered little Christian girls are going to go completely buck wild.

I've known plenty of well-adjusted home-schooled kids.

I've also known many severely socially-retarded kids who went to public schools. It's called the war gaming club at my college

Not saying there is. I'm a member of the club and I spent many an hour down there playing Risk, Munchkin, Magic the Gathering, and video games. My favorite moments were the time a member spilled his Mountain Dew then sucked it out of the filthy disgusting carpet and the time we had a two hour discussion on who would win in a battle: the Star Trek universe or the Star Wars universe. Star Wars won by a vote, but the only unanimous decision was that Q started it and now he's sitting back watching with a bowl of popcorn

Some differences do exist between high school and home-school proms.

Quotes from Scripture are sprinkled throughout the room, and a prayer precedes dinner. No king or queen is crowned.

And the dress code is a tad more strict. For girls, long dresses are encouraged but not required. Seamstresses are available for last-minute alterations, and any plunging necklines are covered with strategically placed fabric. For boys, tuxedos or dress suits with ties are required; no T-shirts, sports coats or tennis shoes allowed.

Well that's nice. Do they have a similar event for the heathens?

"Barefooted sword-fighting"? Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

Yeah, but they can think for themselves, they're smarter than hell and none of them are brain-dead servant-minions of The State.

No wonder they're hated by the pubic-skrool grads. First rule of Hate ... drag the best and the brightest down into the sewer with you ...

Home schooled 18 year old heathens are too busy studying for their college sophomore finals to find an elaborate party. They just shag a co-ed and get back to studies.

When I think of homeschooled, I think of staring at a chick's asshole while I do her doggy style.

The problem with home schooling is that for every 1 child that has parent that are doing it for the right reasons and have the ability to do a better job, there are 9 children being home schooled by uneducated (often parents couldn't pass GED test) people because of their bat shiat beliefs or fear that the government will take their children away (which they should because they are horse shiat parents).

So it's not a "homeschool" prom it's a conservative evangelical homeschool prom.

Grables'Daughter: It really does seem that all of the homeschooled kids are weird...

CSB time: I knew two ultra-Fundamentalist kids when I was a teenager. They were brother and sister, my age, and we all went to a fundie Christian church together in rural TN. Their parents were even more fundamentalist then everyone else there, which was saying something. Speaking in tongues was a regular Sunday occurrence, and these poor kids mom would do that, get up and dance in the aisle and then basically lap the perimeter of the sanctuary, twirling the whole way. They were also big believers in the quiverfull movement and had spit out a ton of kids in a short amount of time. Anyway, the brother and sister were much older than all of their siblings since momma got into the quiverfull movement a bit later in life. They were stuck having to help raise those kids. They were also homeschooled and I remember the girl, who was very pretty and sweet had to wear the standard ankle-length dresses, etc. etc. I had quite a crush on her and I think she liked me too, but both of them were weird. Its hard to explain, but they just had a weird way of thinking and acting and they approached life differently somehow. I was pretty good friends with her brother too, but we all drifted apart once I decided I had had enough of church.

Fast forward to a couple of years ago. I find out he's moved out of state, but I also find out that the girl has moved clear to California outside of LA somewhere, dyed her hair and from what I can tell, is into partying and was living with some guy she wasn't married to. She dresses in miniskirts and tight tops and pretty much rejected everything from her upbringing. I'm pretty proud of her, but a bit worried that she rebelled a bit too well.

I have no idea where I was going with that, other than that, yes, those kids are weird, but sometimes, maybe alot of times, they grow up to reject their parents goofy views and actually turn out okay. I hope.

Funny how the chaperones followed them to the ihop afterwards. What's a matter, mom and dad? Don't trust the daughter that you sheltered from the real world to not blow her date just to get back at you for being douchebags?

Well, you're doing her, you have a stack of pancakes next to you and her grandmother on your Bluetooth, and you think, "wow, that is such a striking asshole, I wish I could paint a portrait of it like van Gogh would".

I tried homeschooling my two kids, who are 18 months apart. We did our regular lessons everyday, went on a lot of field trips, exercised, and had fun. They always got A+'s on their homework and also aced every test. They seemed really bright and engaged.

Then they took their state issued standardized tests, and they were both way behind grade level, like three-plus years behind.

So, as someone who tried it, I can without a doubt say that it doesn't work. I think you'd need some super smart kids or maybe easier standardized tests. I wish we'd never tried it, because I cannot shake my disappointment in them. I think they sense that too.

The parents are generally odd so the kids don't have much chance to be otherwise. I don't know anyone my age who was home-schooled, but I know a few of my kids' peers who are and their parents are a serious kook-fest.

I never heard the ultra christian homeschooled stereotype till I was in college. Where I was from all the christian kids just went to private christian schools and the people who were homeschooled either had parents who

-were ultra-liberal and thought public school wasn't challenging enough/too conservative
-didn't give a fark or had discipline-case kids
-believed in "unschooling"

These kids in the article sound like they're either going to turn into rebellious types or the next wave of young republicans.

5-7 is reason enough.

And no you cannot "go it alone" when it comes to home schooling. You have to have some outside source of material and testing. Or you will end up with:

spentmiles: Then they took their state issued standardized tests, and they were both way behind grade level, like three-plus years behind.

It's like the crazy parents that home school sometimes think letting their kids be normal isn't a bad idea. I've met normal home schooled kids and I've met total wrecks that can't function in society. It's like there's a whole gamut of possibilities. My neighbor with his 55 kids home schools and they are pretty good kids. They play with the other kids in the neighborhood and don't proselytize. Of course that neighbor is just insanely devout Catholic and not a fringe group, so that may be part of it.

/my first thought was critiquing the terribad sword and board form from the kids

55 KIDS? Ok, you neighbor is running a school. It maybe on a compound, but when you have a higher teacher to student ration than Detroit public schools, you are in a different category

Sarcasm. I lost count, it's actually 5 daughters at last count. Entertaining part is that his house FACES the middle school of one of the top districts in Ohio.

On the plus side they are all good with kids, so cheap babby watching for the spawnofargh.

silly subby... ultra conservative evangelical christian parents don't let their kids watch 'secular' TV and they certainly don't allow them to have access to the internet. Their only knowledge of other kids is from watching Veggie Tales and reading the Left Behind books.

Worked with some home schooled kids and also some from the really small private religious schools in sports and youth groups.

Typically good kids but the biggest issue is their view of the world is just a little off. Hard to explain until you actually see it in action. Socially awkward at times also

At some point the kiddies need to swim in the deep end...
