Lumpmoose: Dinobot: Lumpmoose: I think what ruined it was giving her a voice that sounded like a child with Down's Syndrome then blaming the internet for the fallout.

No one had told Tabitha St. Germain that Derpy was a girl...

You think gender was the problem? The first voice sounds "retarded" to me in the most stereotypical sense, especially when combined with her behavior. The voice actor's opinion is irrelevant. The internet's transient definition of "Derpy" is irrelevent; it was a term of endearment from the fans in this context. The voice director, episode director or producers should have put the kibosh on the voice choice from the start. If they gave the character a normal voice, Derpy would have been a hit and she could have kept the name and the googly eyes.

Tabitha was given a description of the character before reading the lines -- she thought of the boy that lived next door to her, who acted a lot like the character... a bit clumsy, a bit bubbly, cheerful and somewhat of a walking disaster area but well meaning in the end... and thus voiced derpy as the boy she knew.

The character was orignally named "Dipsy Doo" but the fans had created the name, and they adopted it in the second season. It's a fine example of an ascended meme. (Warning: your afternoon is forfeit if you click on that link.)

Uh. I'm curious as to what would make a grown man LOVE a girls cartoon, but I'm afraid that the show has subliminal messages that turn anyone who watches it into a raving fan.

My cute little story: My niece, 5, loves the show. So I put it on for her when she comes to visit. Now I'm a Librarian, and while I'm not employed in that area right now, I do volenteer at the library to help and keep my skills up.

My niece has confabulated that since Twilight lives in a Library, and I'm a librarian, I must live at the library like she does, and Twilight lives with me.

"Hell no. It's a freaking embarrassment. Until television in America has become nothing more than the constant ramblings of our glorious leader(A la the film Equilibrium), idiots like Breitbart will constantly biatch and moan in a fashion resembling a homeless guy on a soap box. The first two episodes are quite weak to be honest.

Best general introductory episodes from season 1 are

- DragonShy
- Bridle Gossip
- Cutie Mark Chronicles

Other episodes are good too, but focus mostly on one character
- Sonic Rainboom
- Party of One
- Dog and Pony Show

Well. Yeah. Mostly because if the meme is as absurdly hilarious to me as it is(I was DJ'ing a private party over the weekend rocking a neon DJ Pon-3 shirt, Everybody LOVED it. I mean EVERYBODY).

So it seems like if I'm taking the meme along with me in my pseudo professional-dj capacity, I might as well respect the source material as best I can. That, and you never know. Maybe MLP will have some incredibly awesome lines I can sample the shiat out of(like I have so many times with Eastbound and Down and other shows).

2012-04-26 02:11:58 PM
I think what this author might also be missing (and I have to be honest, I haven't really watched the newer "Hub" toons and saw the Lebowski and other references before reading this thread), but, it seems apparent that the "new" My Little Pony show is more like Animaniacs/Rocky and Bullwinkle type of humor.

But, remember, "My Little Pony" dolls came out in 1981.... 30+ years ago, and was basically just pony doll's for girls. So, if your only exposure to MLP is "Yeah, I remember those dolls when I was growing up and my sister had them" and then happening upon some websites with these "Bronies"..... you might not really "get" why they like it.

/the author is probably still a homophobic right-wing tard, but, the above thought is semi-legit

Feeling Pinkie Keen was funny but not exactly representative of the humor used in the series as a whole -- I saw that episode mostly as a homage to Looney Tunes cartoons.

FirstNationalBastard: Yes, there is a Derpy.

KatjaMouse: Then this season not only is she referred to specifically as Derpy by one of the lead characters but she finally talks too.

I think having her say lines ruined it a little but I still think it's hilarious that they ran with the joke.

Thanks to all who answered.

The fact that there's a "Derpy," and the origin-story, even if (apparently) it wasn't handled as well as it could have been, is pretty farkin' awesome.

Thanks for the details and confirmation, all.

THIS is an exactly-correct encapsulation of my take on the whole thing (er, minus the "having a sister" aspect). But, thanks to this thread and the consistently funny .jpgs, I will admit that I'm'a track down the recommended episodes when I have a lot of time to kill.

And if it really is even remotely like Animaniacs, yeah, I'll be a fan immediately.

So I watched it on Netflix streaming because I wanted to see if Bronies just like the show ironically or if it's really subversively funny or what.

Hegemonic masculinity

There are two key factors in producing a hegemonic masculinity: domination and marginalization. Domination establishes the ideal qualities by which some men are elevated, but marginalization describes the oppression involved and the actual ranking of men based on masculinities. As these factors are only what society currently deems masculine, and domination and marginalization are static, hegemonic masculinity is a dynamic standard.
