Siffy has two hours of wrestling per week.

That's it. Two hours.

While I agree that WWE doesn't belong on a Sci-Fi channel, well, Siffy isn't a sci-fi channel anymore. Plus, what is two hours per week, with no replays, compared to the hours upon hours of ghost shows and car building shows and reality shows they have planned?

So don't lump wrestling in with the things ruining Siffy. There are dozens of hours of programming on siffy that are worse than Smackdown.

The 90s were pretty cool, back when the History Channel showed history, the Sci-Fi Channel showed sci-fi, Court TV showed court on TV, and the Weather Channel showed the weather.

Such simple times.

I'm glad I don't stress about scripts on webpages so much that I actively get angry at them. Sheesh I've never had an issue with a Gawker website, maybe because I don't care enough to install a dozen extensions to turn off all the things that don't bug me anyway.

Maybe Turner Classic Movies. I mean, TCM still airs commercial free classic movies. No reality shows, no original scripted dramas, just old movies.

Everything else?

TV Land and Nick at Nite don't air classic TV anymore. Game Show Network only falls back on running game shows when the reality shows they want to air bomb horribly. The only thing you learn about on The Learning Channel is 600 pound midgets with 24.4 children who put their toddlers in beauty contests. A&E Has nothing to do with Arts or Entertainment, unless you're entertained by Bounty Hunters who need interventions for hoarding stuff in their storage units. The History Channel only airs shows about Alien Cable Guys with Axes who Pawn ice trucks for Jesus after picking stuff from the end of the world. And the goddamned Weather Channel hardly shows you weather because they'd rather air the 1996 film Twister.

The niche network era is dead, replaced by 500 channels of homogenized nothing.

Their site requires Javascript from 2 different domains, just to display simple text and images and do nothing fancy. You know what shoud be required? Nothing. It's farking text and images that don't do anything fancy. That's what HTML is for.

They've gone out of their way to make their site shiatty for people who care about such things, and since they're a technically oriented family of sites, that's a much larger than normal subset of their users.

If it doesn't bother you, fine. It bothers a bunch of other people.

Sounds like you're going out of your way to make the web harder to surf for no apparent reason. Is two different domain sources for Javascript hurting me or my computer in any appreciable way? No? Well then, you're the one making your internet harder to work, not them.

The Gawker site redesign from last year is also pretty much broken if you are using a tablet. I'll admit, the Kindle Fire doesn't have the best web browser in the world, but they really went out of their way to make the site unusable on my device. I just don't undertsand how you can screw up a simple concept like a blog so badly.

I do still read io9 pretty regularly because they are a pretty decent source of sci-fi and fantasy news. Gizmodo has gotten to be almost unreadably bad, though. They seem to spend so much time being hipsters that they don't actually bother to actually follow real tech news in a timely manner like Engadget or The Verge. You'll EVENTUALLY read about a story there, but it's usually hours or days after the other sites report it. They never fail to post whatever pretty picture of a military jet Jesus Dias has found for the day, though. I swear the guy must spend half his time jerking off to pics of F-35s.

Gawker is terrible because it is insanely easy to fix it so that javascript being disabled does not break the entirety of the site. And what's worse, is that the text WILL load for about .5 seconds until it hides it again.

The fact that it uses a CDN (content delivery network - IE that second domain designed just to serve some of the images and content) itself isn't a great concern.

If you can't see why the former is bad, try browsing from:
a) enterprise browsers that have javascript functionality partially disabled,
b)screen readers for the blind,
c)government systems where accessibility standards are enforced to meet ADA requirements.

There's a very good reason the vast majority of websites don't use the "Fake frames" technique gawker uses - it's a bloated, inaccesible mound of code to do something that has been utterly antique since 2000, and downright idiotic in a day where huge measures are taken to ensure the best possible functionality across the gamut of browsers, screen resolutions, and means and modalities of accessing the web.

If you want to complain about third party plugins muddying things up for the web, complain about this kind of usage of javascript preventing people from even reading the article.

Fair enough. It's never been an issue for me but I don't have to deal with those issues. Still can't get worked up enough to get the crazy hate for them though, it's not like the people writing the articles design the site.

Old enough to know better: It still puzzles me how they can get better ratings by making the same shiatty reality shows that every other network craps out than they can producing original SF program.

But you know, the hell with SyFy. I buy dvds and download Doctor Who and Sherlock when they're available. fark cable.

Sci-Fi has a relatively limited audience. Also, sci-fi fans will find another source to watch their shows from. Hell, you said as much yourself... So, you're not giving them ratings, which means they can't charge advertisers, and without that money, there is no show.

On the other hand, people who watch reality shows are barely sentient. They wouldn't download stuff. They're sitting there, watching the commercials that pay for the reality shows. And reality shows are cheaper than scripted shows, anyway. So, even if a reality show has lower ratings than a scripted show, the reality show will be more profitable.

To see proof of that in action, look at what ABC and CBS did with their soaps. Shows that had been around for 50 years were canceled and replaced with shiatty talk shows. The talk shows aren't doing any better in the ratings than the old soaps, but the talk shows are cheaper to produce, so they're successful.

Cthulhu_is_my_homeboy: If Syfylis kills Haven that'll be the last I even watch of the network. I'm still mad that they killed the one Stargate series that was anything like the film, just as it was starting to build up steam. At this point, the goddamn Science Channel has more and better sci-fi than Syfy does.
