A 1 Series?? Oh come on man.. at least buy a 3 series if you're pretending to afford a well-built car.

the power-to-weight ratio on a 1 series is crazy, even on a 128i. and even a 1 series is built like a swiss watch.

The 128i is a porker. It's only 200 pounds less than a 328i.

We have a lot of people who drive 328s in Dallas. It screams "poser rich." The one series should be strictly for spoiled high school girls.

I should probably clarify that you're right, but I thought the 1 series was a total letdown. I thought they would make a real lightweight, good handling car like the 2002 and 3 series of old. Instead we got a luxo-barge that offers no significant performance improvement over the 3. It's just cheaper, smaller, and slightly lighter.

Wow, you guys know that the 1 and 3 series have the SAME engines, right? 128i and 328i, same engine. It's a 2.8l inline 6, if things haven't changed a whole lot recently.

The only "low end" beemers worth looking twice at are the 335i. My god, it's full of turbo boost.

I had the pleasure of driving a M6X for a week a while back. I would sell my soul, and yours for that vehicle. (can't really say car)

Isn't that the car Car and Driver scrapped in their last issue, motor was shot with only about 130,000 miles on it?
Oh yeah, that's ultimate all right....

This was just a short throw from where I live, this guy's father just passed away in February and in April he's looking for a new car? Life Insurance most likely as the father had a HUGE house south of Carbondale, Illinois The father had a pretty decent-sized CPA business in Carbondale as well. I wondered myself why he'd be looking at a 1 series. I thought it odd too that no mention was made of the cars outcome, or pics of the wrecked car, or speeds. There were a couple better articles in different papers than that one that was linked.

I was looking about a year ago before I got an Infiniti and was considering and drove the 528i. This was the pre-remodeled one.

I'll be able to afford the Infiniti after the warranty runs out (a little more) I hope.

Completely awesome - this is the third M3 I've had over the last18 year period and never a regret. Infact my E46 never burned oil.

Too small, but pretty fun.

Well there's a difference, the M3 is a good car and the 128i isn't.

How do you crash a car on a test drive when you aren't 16 and you have your mom in the car? The fact that he had his 77 year old mom in the car should have guaranteed he wouldn't exceed the speed limit. I can understand if you take a buddy with you, yeah you're probably going to 'test' the acceleration, but with your elderly mother? Weird.

I had a 135. Super quick car, chipped it and dyno'd 312 at the rear wheels. I'd have another if they would fix the farking fuel pumps. I had to have one after driving one at the Performance Center.

I'm surprised it didn't use BMW's patented, proprietary Breaking Down(TM) feature that would have prevented him from even driving to the cliff in the first place.

If the famous Breaking Down(TM) feature had been working correctly, some random electrical crap would have shut down the vehicle a mile or two from the crash site. No one would have been hurt. It would have just been a tow, having a rental car for three weeks while out-of-stock parts were special ordered from Germany, then approximately a $3,000 bill.

Unfortunately, the specially-designed malfunctioning electronics malfunctioned, allowing the car to keep running and this terrible tragedy to happen.

i test drove a 135i 6-speed last year, and it went like a bat out of hell.

i had to order my 328i (e90) special because nobody sells a 3-series with a manual transmission in this country. and it was way better than the slushboxes in the other 3s i drove. (that being said, i just tested a new 328i with the new 8-speed auto, and in sport mode, it's pretty freaking responsive, so maybe they finally have it sorted.)

I just watched a BMW commercial, the BMW was driving normal while there was a message that said "professional driver, do not attempt". So are they saying do not attempt to drive this car like a normal person?

Um... no. Wife has a 135i with a Dinan Stage II upgrade in it. 355bhp with 401 foot pounds of torque and is respectable on the track, too:

Forgot to mention, the sway bar on the 135i is ridiculously small (11mm). Got a 23mm on it and it took care of the undeersteer completely.

I'm still sad that we didn't get the first generation 1-series 5 door here in the US, one of the best looking cars BMW's made IMHO and we didn't get it because "American's don't like hatchbacks". We also don't get the x1 because despite selling well all over the world BMW USA doesn't think a fuel efficient crossover will sell here. Oh well, hopefully Mazda will sell a ton of CX5's, I'd rather they get the money anyways.

Speaking of fun cars along those lines, the new Scion FR-S and Hyundai Veloster Turbo look nice. The Hyundai Genesis 3.8 might make a decent replacement for a 328, though I don't think I'd stack it against a 335.
