so name one policy you think caused this? That republicans supported?

Ohh man, when I was going to college during the summer I worked 2 jobs. I would work a morning shift at job A go home, have a beer, then go to night job B. Six days a week for both jobs, I either had a morning off or a night off, and it rarely fell on the same day, so I basically never had a full day off. At the end of summer I made a cool 14k, but it basically went right into my education. I did that for 2 years, then said, fark it, I'm taking some loans out.

2012-04-25 08:19:44 PM
Grand_Moff_Joseph: To jump off of that point, I propose we convert the House into a lottery system.

-Citizens are eligible for the lottery after reaching age 25, or graduating from a college/university/trade school; whichever comes first
-Every two years, a person is chosen by lottery, just like jury duty. Once picked, a person is barred from being picked again for at least 4 years.
-That person represents their district in the House for a standard 2 year term. At the end of the term, the lottery is held again.
-While serving, the chosen person is compensated at 110% of their last year's individual salary, up to $75K. That person will also be reimbursed (at std. rates) for trips home, up to a maximum of 4 per year.
-Meanwhile, the Senate will remain an elected body, but with terms reduced to 4 years from 6

I always found the idea of demarchy interesting but I'm not sure if it's any better practically. Still, I think it's worth a shot.

Also, if your going for that you may as well get rid of congressional districts entirely (and the gerrymandering issue with it) and choose from the entire citizenship for each position. You should probably make the House bigger as well so it less likely to over/under represent one group or another by chance.

Akin said the government should be out of the student loan market altogether. "America has got the equivalent of the stage three cancer of socialism because the federal government is tampering in all kinds of stuff it has no business tampering in," he said.

Steelman and Akin both said they didn't support a proposal to allow citizenship for people who ... earned a college diploma. "I believe we've got to take away all the incentives that are attracting the illegals to begin with," Steelman said.

Affording to another farker whose handle I can't remember, conservative wisdom would tell you that when the government spends money on education, research, and development, the country falls behind in those areas relative to the rest of the world. Clearly this is supported by the American experience of the 20th century.

I say lower the rate to like almost nothing. Students work hard. They'll get good jobs, make the economy better, stronger.

I mean, I almost don't care if they raise taxes a whole lot more. Education is important.

When college kids with 85K in debt can fly their private jets to Capitol Hill to demand their bail-outs, then maybe we will see it happen.

Let me see if I can capture the argument in a few bullet points.

1) There is $1 trillion of student debt
2) There is a ngro in the White House and he is not sweeping floors
3) Socialism

That's it? Smells like a Republican argument to me. Reality: students will get an interest rate increase in their loans if Romney is elected.

Wow, I agree with Winterwhile! Charging less than the going interest rate is effectively giving them some money. Not as much as the whole loan, but you're sort of subsidizing them for the difference in interest.

I'm betting that's where the agreement stops, though, because I think we should be giving the students much more than just part of what the interest would have cost.

Not RAISING an interest rate is going to COST something to the entity that issued the loan? Yea, I guess it'll "cost" the extra profit they would have made from the extra interest payments.

You just have to do this thing once. Once people don't have to pay back their student loan debt, they can go buy other stuff and stimulate the economy for real.

Just think how much more money would be flying around....
