bunner: HatMadeOfAss: You guys just don your cop hate hard-ons and think the "pigs" are out to rape your mothers and steal your shiat. Grow up.

Most of the people in a position of authority in any situation are, like most of us, still somewhat frightened and confused children inside and when confronted with any circumstance where their authority is questioned, tend to respond with "YEW BETTER DO WHUT AH SAY OR I'LL F*CK YOU UP!". Sad, ain't it?

Displacing your own feelings of inadequacy onto authority figures is not a valid excuse for cop hate.

LOLs. I used to do some work in a prison. I was thinking of the stories I heard from the guards. You'd be amazed at the stuff that's been smuggled in up there.

Well, maybe you wouldn't, if you're in to that sort of thing...

It's an old idea. For instance, in 'Papillon', (a memoir by convicted felon and fugitive Henri Charrière, describing his escape from a penal colony in French Guiana back in the 1930's and 40's), he describes a plan, a hollow metal cylinder containing money, lodged in the rectum. One character keeps a spare (folding) pair of eyeglasses in his.

I always arrive two hours early. Too much can go wrong. I honestly love the extra time behind security, especially if I'm travelling alone. It's a sort of mini-vacation where I have some enforced dead time. Usually I take a good book to read and drink a few beers at an airport bar. Lately all my checkpoints have been back-scatter and I haven't yet opted out. It's quick. I being behind old people who don't understand the TSA goon's instructions to "assume the position" but even that only takes 30 seconds extra. I'm really ok with travel these days, even though on an intellectual level I think the TSA is completely stupid.

In short, I am part of the reason why the TSA gets away with it. :( Damn!

That may work. Have them start profiling all brown people, end up with a massive discrimination lawsuit, and force the shutdown of TSA due to money/legal troubles.

Pert: Yes. The TSA are behaving in a ridiculous manner here.

FTFA: "for her to be singled out, it's crazy" - she wasn't singled out, everyone has to be screened but she can't be screened via metal detector so she has to be patted down like everybody else who can't be screened via metal detectors. Yes, the rules are silly, but she wasn't singled out. You should be pleased that your disabled daughter has been treated in the same way as any other person and NOT singled out.

However, if the difference between catching your flight and missing your flight is the additional 3-5 minutes required for a pat-down then you are a screaming idiot and have not left enough time to get to your flight.

Doubly so with kids. Allow extra time.

I fly all the time and even though I KNOW I will be sitting on my fat arse for 90 minutes at the airport 90% of the time I STILL aim to get to the airport 2 or 3 hours early for each flight so that I don't miss that one flight where traffic is bad and the screeners decide to unpack all my luggage and go through it for an hour.

i hope you feel better about yourself.
Because , we all feel your kind of special.

PsiChick: starlost: Her family reportedly requests that agents on hand take the time to introduce themselves to her.

sounds like the tsa and the family was doing a verbal pushing match and the tsa won. if the parents were nasty as hell i wouldn't have taken the time to introduce myself to the kid because the parents told me too. i'm in charge not the parents.and no i'm not with the tsa. i'm the passenger in back of these asshats.

Um, that's actually pretty standard for dealing with anyone on a professional level. Like normal adults. If someone says "my kid's disabled, at the very least say hi before patting her down so she doesn't flip out", your job is to shut up, quit whining, and introduce yourself.

Random screening is a perfect valid security measure. Random screening with McDonald's employees trying to screen a disabled person or child is just asking for problems. This isn't a normal job--why are we pretending they don't need extra training to avoid traumatizing people?

Because I am tired of pretending that we actually need these people. So I'm not pretending they need any extra training except, maybe for a job that does actually do something worthwhile.
If you required them to hand out balloons to kids, that would be a step in the right direction.

I don't need to be a shrink to read that you feel like a scared and confused child. I just have to be able to read and comprehend English, which I have done. Furthermore, I'm not projecting anything onto you. Rather it was you, in your own words (not mine), that said most people in authority are scared and confused children. The people who fly are selfish bastards. All of them.

Everyone was invited to take a different for of travel if they disagreed with the security in the terminal, remember? They chose to fly. Now they complain.

I see it as the airline passengers are the problem. If no one chose to fly, overnight policy would be changed or airlines would cease to exist or become government airlines.

By continuing to fly rather than to take the government up on their own offer, they subject themselves to this and prolong the security theater.

Young males? Sure, that would narrow it down significantly. Young males are more likely to be terrorists than old ladies and disabled children. We can agree on that much.

However, only the most myopic and historically illiterate would equate the TSA with the "forth Reich" or a "police state". I suspect that most of it is the standard welcome-to-Fark embellishment, but if you honestly believe that TSA is a government-sanctioned child molestation program, a reality check will serve you well.

People have that attitude because no one likes the TSA, and everyone knows it's never going away and only going to get worse. And there's nothing we can do about it.

I wouldn't pay the $.02...

There are a lot of people who have no choice but to fly. Say you only have a few days available that you can take your kids to Disney. You live in Ohio. Now, what ways are available to get to either Florida or California? Car? Two days minimum. Train? Same. Bus? Yagottabefarkinkiddinme. I don't have two weeks' extra vacation each year to travel by train, or the money for motels and extra insurance to drive; and it's very difficult to convince my company that we should exchange the inconvenience of the TSA for the inconvenience of travel by boat for our overseas travel; plus the fact you can no longer get a transoceanic crossing that isn't some kind of luxury cruise anymore.

Get back to me when you've solved these problems.

We live in Alaska, and flying is the ONLY way to get to most places from here. Yes, you COULD drive, take the ferry, go through Canada (with passports for your whole family), or I guess ride bicycles if you're really open with your scheduling...

...but flying is IT, as far as truly being able to travel freely. And the issue here is that this child has a medical condition which would be completely, totally, reasonably overlooked were she an elderly person. Someone in the TSA wanted to make a point. Someone was in a bad mood and chose to take it out on this family (probably because the parents knew wtf they were talking about, and Dad, the Pediatrician, chose to videotape it).

We just went on a family vacation, with 4 of our kids, and I was honestly scared to death of what my reaction would be if they tried to touch one of my kids. You spend your life teaching them about good touch/bad touch, and then let some idiot in a cheap shirt and plastic badge grope them???

I told my husband I was bringing all their swim suits (yeah, we're a swim team family), and the boys could wear their trunks and the girls their suits. It didn't come to that, thank goodness. They did, however, have their suits on under their clothes. Just in case. I'd rather have them hone down to swim gear in public than be groped by some ape who likes little boys.

I get the full pat-down every time because I wear long skirts (for comfort, not for religious reasons). This time I wore jeans, and ta-da! No pat down. Amazing
