Diogenes: Well sure. When offered in such general terms it's hard to disagree with that. Question is, is that a real concern in the context of the article (which is suspect to begin with)?

The article is stupid. WND is stupid. I just skimmed it for the link to the PDF and read the PDF itself instead.

The problem with this legislation is it uses the term gender identity and seems to use transgendered as an example. It's unclear if they mean only transgendered, and it says nothing about pre or post-op. Then it has no way of identifying whether someone is transgendered or not and indeed, doing anything to find out constitutes discrimination. In sum, if passed, next time I'm at a public pool, I can just tell them I'm pre-op transgendered and shower with the ladies. Or I can tell them I'm post-op transgendered and just never take my pants off.

It's an incredibly difficult problem. I don't know what the solution is but this sure as hell isn't it.

I mean, we're already turning a blind eye regarding same sex marriage and gave them a pass on discriminating against skin color.

They'd better watch their sh*t.

yeah, mighty big of us not to force them to perform religious ceremonies against their wills

LOL.

That could be fun though. Like requiring them to perform spontaneous baptisms on people on the street.

I once made out with a guy in the bathroom of the vacant rectory apartment in our church. I can only imagine how much more depraved we would've been if we'd had co-ed showers.

Anyway, I could see how this could present problems for some churches. Imagine how a priest would feel if, when taking his daily shower with the alter boys, some nun walked in!

Any religion that is upset about anti-bigotry laws because it may inhibit their religious bigotry deserves to be wiped off the face of the Earth. They offer nothing to Humanity but misery and fear

That is stupid.

Who gets to decide what is considered bigotry? The idiots in congress?

If your religion involves oppressing someone else, you're a bigot and shouldn't be allowed to hide behind religion to do it.

I can't say that when I'm taking a shiat I'm particularly bothered one way or another about the demographic background of the person doing the same a stall away, they're welcome to be as gay and/or female as they like, I'm too busy giving a literal shiat to give a figurative one. Likewise a group shower for athletics is generally used when you're done with a proper workout and need to wash the sweat and feeling of being run over with a Mac truck out, not really a sexual context for me the same way my shower at home is (well, to a degree). If you really think of it in that light I suggest you consider expanding your porn collection.

I mean, not that there's anything _wrong_ with Debbie Does Dallas, but if it's messing with your head on that level you should pick up something new for the weekend. If you want to stay in the same general era of porn maybe grab "Planet of the Babes" and you can at least amuse us by ranting about how the lesbian agenda is going to make us allow coed cage access instead.

//The above is not intended as serious. Paying for porn is bad, kids, don't do it.

I'm not going to ask you to RTFA because a reasonable response is "WND is stupid." I agree with that sentiment. I skimmed the article for you and found the PDF.

Here it is. (PDF Warning)

Read the PDF. It even has a section directly discussing showers. And make sure to read section 2 under Public Accommodations where it says you just have to take their word for it they are transgendered and allow them access to whatever bathroom/shower/gender segregated facility they want.

Or alternatively, keep posting stupid comments having no idea what you're talking about. Or back out of the thread.

Hey, WMD geniuses:

It's likely you've already showered beside a homosexual. It's likely some homosexual has checked you out at some point in your sad, sad life. You have already shaken the hand of a homosexual and used the same soap dispenser. You like to eat out? Guess what. You've used the same plate and flatware as a homosexual at some point.

Kindly return to the hole from whence you came.

I wish these morons would go start their own society on Antarctica or another planet in Texas. They can install a theocratic government and oppress each other all they want, isolated from the rest of civilization.

Fixed. It's not that isolated, but so many of these people are already there or in nearby states. Texas is a big place. They'd have room to roam. The sane people could depart for other states or build a wall around Austin and take shelter there from the crazies.

So basically, they've decided that the "your wife or daughter will have to share a fitting room with men in dresses" argument wasn't scary enough and decided to move on to "co-ed showers in churches." Since they had to up the ante on their scare tactics, does that mean progress because the other one isn't working anymore?

/When the mayor of Gainesville, FL was running for office, people were distributing fliers claiming that, "If you elect Craig Lowe, he'll let men use the women's fitting rooms."

I don't think it is an incredibly difficult problem. Its difficulty is directly proportional to the number of people willing to violate other people's privacy for purpose of their own sexual gratification.

Gay and lesbian people already have this sort of access, yet you don't hear about abuses because nearly all people use a locker room the way it is intended: as fast as possible and with respect towards other users.

I know if I was transgendered, I'd pick the door that had the lowest chance of causing a stir, but I do believe that if people are behaving appropriately, it wouldn't really matter.

Exactly. So what would prevent the 50 year old guy from being in the same pool shower as the 10 year old girl in the original hypothetical scenario that some were calling 'fantasy'?

So we should just take everyone at their word? You do see the potential problem this creates, right? I get there's no objective way to determine if someone is transgender. I don't have a solution. But I'm telling you, this suggestion causes way more problems than it fixes.

Also, to continue this discussion, if a perv tries this out, the owner of the facility can just politely ask him to leave or deny him usage, and the perv can use the discrimination remedies outlined in the PDF to try to force the issue, but I doubt many pervs will be willing to undergo that kind of scrutiny.

Is the panic subsiding a little?

Dude, all someone said was that they wouldn't be too happy to see a 50-year old dude coming out of the same shower that their 10 year old girl just went into. It is simply a statement of someone's personal reaction. Frankly, I also agree that I would find that unsettling. That is not a statement that the 50-year old person is automatically a pervert child rapist. But something like that surely would take a LOT of getting used to, if it is possible at all.

I didn't really see anyone posit the 'worst possible scenario'. From what I am reading in this thread, it seems entirely possible that an honest-to-goodness transgendered 50 year old guy might be showering in the ladies shower at the public pool where young girls go and shower. That would take some getting used to. Stating that is the same as OMGWTFBBQ!!!!!????

Grungehamster: Their argument now is that if they try to rent out their property for profit the government will say they can't say they don't allow any gay people to rent or use the facilities. That actually is a possible scenario, because once you enter the public marketplace the fact that the owner has religious ties doesn't mean they can ignore the rules of society.

This has already happened under a combination of state laws, namely New Jersey's law against non-discrimination in places of public accommodation. Of course, that was kind of a special case because the religious group had signed a covenant with the government to make the building available to the public.
