How the fark can you tell in a commercial theater system anyway? Usually the volume is so loud that you don't hear any type of subtlety or background sounds. It's like one big wall of sound pounding away for a few hours.

Dolby: We have the best, future-proof audio technology! Now, there's an overhead channel! The audience can hear a helicopter fly overhead bringing a whole new dimension of atmosphere.

Next year...

Dolby: The old ATMO System is old technology, too few channels. We've rethought out how to do real audio. Now, we have the best, future-proof audio technology. Now there's an innovative floor channel! The audience can hear creepy crawlers scurry underfoot bringing a whole new dimension of atmosphere.

/Same old story.
//Maybe they should put a bit more effort into improving the sound upfront that has the most impact instead of focusing on sonic special effects.

Every single Dolby theatre I've been in has sounded like crap.

No I don't listen to vinyl.

Feh. I'd rather they get theaters to stop turning the volume level up to 120 dB.

The main reason I rarely go to the movies -- after the cost -- is that the volume is often painfully too loud.

And I'm not just talking about action movies. I had to watch True Grit with my hands over my ears because the volume was set so damn high.

I do that sometimes too.

I also have to strain to hear what people are saying sometimes because it's quieter than my heart is beating. And then of course someone sets off a bomb and the blood trickles out of my ears.

Maybe this can enhance horror, terror, fantasy, thrillers, and dramas mostly. there's already so much going on in today's big budget action movies, I doubt it will enhance a thing. I'm already sensory confused in those movies.

also, I think it's bad enough movie studios have basically artificially inflated the new movie tech by agreeing to produce mostly all digital releases (no more tape reels sent out to theaters). Result: A small, temporary economic hike in that electronics industry, a big depression for pastoral and small town theatres (which will be a financial blow to the movie industry over all).

See, the $12,000+ for the digital rendering system per screen is too much for 3 of our 4 local theaters in this area, along with the drive-in, (these are each in small farming towns about 25 to 50 miles apart in any direction), and they will all be going out of business once this plan takes effect.

SO what do you think an upgrade like this sound system will cost? Not to mention licensing and patent fees, we're already paying $7-$10 for the ticket, let's add on another $0.50, right? No, this will be a big city only fair.

Sounds cool. But completely, utterly unnecessary.

thornhill: That has more to do with who mixes the audio.

Everything since the creation of 5.1 has done this. I attribute this to completely retarded people thinking everyone has center and surround channels.

The downmix to 2.0 or 2.1 is never handled correctly by any hardware and all the voices are shoved in the center or surround channels. I actually tell my media player to send the output of all center and surround signals to my left and right front speakers. It's amazing the difference it makes.

Studios have basically given a giant middle finger to anyone without a 5.1 setup that allow you to adjust the volume of each channel in relation to the others.

The script sucks.

The dialog is too quiet compared to the sound effects.

"it depends on the person that mixes the sound" Idiots are mixing the sound.

If your production sucks in Stereo I firmly believe that it will suck in 1024 channels, too.

The last movie that I think was mixed right was probably "Better Off Dead".

I got to experience a similar technology at the Pixar 25 Years of Animation installation at the Oakland Museum. It was pretty damned cool. The sense of immersion was far greater than your typical 5.1/7.1 system.

128 channels, and I still have to hear some farkwit doing hare-lip commentary through the whole film.

You know what would get me to go to the theater again? The ejection of yammering farkwits.

No, you are spot on. I have hearing loss, so when they mix the dialog that far down, I can almost never hear what the f*ck they are saying... but the next explosion will make your ears bleed. Hearing aids won't help because they'll make the explosions damaging to what hearing I have left.

It is good to know that this new system will faithfully reproduce the incompetence of the sound designers in Michael Bay's next flaming turd.

Actually, no, I won't. Gizmodo et al are the most useless farking sites. I won't even click on 'em anymore; I wait until someone else posts the direct link (I used to be that guy).

I don't mind sites that do the 'via' thing, but Gawker and such have this habit of writing 3 lines, attaching a link, and calling it an article.

And since it doesn't sound like upgrades will be expensive, it will hopefully not be an excuse for theater owners to once again raise ticket prices for an Atmos-enhanced screening. But we're not going to hold our breath.

yea, me neither.

If it is an upgrade to the theater experience... you can bet ya ass it will be an upgrade to the ticket prices.

Gunshots and explosions don't sound the way they do in the movies in the first place, so realism clearly isn't an issue. You are a tool.

While I sympathize that few studios are produce true 2.0 mixes, as an owner of a surround sound system with floor standing speakers, I'm also glad that studios are putting so much effort into the sound tracks for home video. The DTS HD mixes on Blu-ray are simply incredible.

Even today's theaters can't keep their sound systems calibrated and operating properly I don't see this helping much. It'll be awesome when it's right. Just as crappy as everything else 6 months down the road.
