Oil doesn't come from dinosaurs. Most of the oil, coal and natural gas were laid down long before the dinosaurs. The raw materials consisted of marine organisms (plankton) buried in sediment and beds of peat-heavy tropical forest like those currently being burned in Indonesia, Brazil and Africa. In any case, the dinosaurs were buried under many layers of sediments, volcanic ash, etc. as well. Geology is not rocket science. It is going on all around us and especially for several miles under our feet.

But as a recent article pointed out, plankton doesn't make as good a mascot for an oil company as a great thundering lizard. The popular misconception was created by advertising, cartoonists and illustrators.

But, as observed, creationists really are dumber than a bag of rocks. In fact, they are dumber than a net bag of Space Rocks(TM) candy. I'm talking really loose mesh, here. Loose mesh with tiny powdered candy in it. No creationist is willing or able to retain a fact which is contrary to their religious preconceptions and prejudices.

DON.MAC: I think I can see the some of the sources of confusion. In grade school I was taught that coal comes from compressed ancient plant life and oil came from compressed ancient animals. There are a lot of people in the 30 -> 80+ age group who were told the same things.

Really? Because I'm in my 50's, I graduated high school in 1978, and no one ever tried to teach me anything that idiotic.

Just to play devil's advocate here:

Hans Bethe, the physicist who figured out how the sun works in the 1930s, lived to a ripe old age and only passed away in the last few years.

He suggested that the methane (natural gas) on earth might not be fossil fuel. He noted that the only place we find helium on earth is in natural gas deposits. I thought that was a damn interesting point.

Also, Frank Zappa suggested that there was much more stupidity than hydrogen in the universe. I thought that was also a damn interesting point. I'm thinking if stupidity is dark energy, than WND might have discovered perpetual motion.
