"It's illegal, so it's an unfortunate thing that had to happen," Phillips said.

What's illegal? Donating a bong to those less fortunate?

Being poor is stressful. At least let them have a toke or two.

Exactly. I don't know why someone would want to eat celery, but you don't see me trying to ban it.

complete with marijuana residue

It's called a bottle brush, people. You wouldn't donate dirty clothes, now would you?

A couple friends and I were in a thrift store on Saturday and we found a half-used bottle of liquid hand soap. People will donate anything, it seems. At least the bong was possibly useful to someone.

This. And there's plenty of solutions that will eat away any of the resin still in your bong. Or you can do what I do and use rubbing alcohol and salt. Much cheaper and works just as well, if not more so, than the professional glass cleaners. One of my buddies used to ship glass all over the country, some new and some used. The alcohol/salt combination worked every time and removed that stank of old bud.

It doesn't say anything about sanitary regulations.

Really? They called the cops, and this made the news.
Just throw it away, and keep sorting.

how to clean your bong:

Go to the store and buy 70% rubbing alcohol or higher and some kosher salt.

For a large bong use half of the bottle and a 1/8th of a cup of kosher salt.

Shake vigorously

Rinse, repeat of necessary.

Keep in mind that alcohol and salt works well for glass but will destroy polymers, like a trusted tobacco master...

You sound awfully confident that you won't be needing that anymore.

2012-04-25 02:37:03 PM
so they only want brand new ones then?

2012-04-25 02:37:41 PM
Oh, do tell. Will the alcohol and salt work well for cleaning my glass pipe. It has a twisted stem and is impossible to clean and the damn thing is clogged right now. Can't get a good draw at all. Should I be able to do the alcohol/salt in a container and then submerge the pipe to soak for a while? There is no way to get in and scrub the insides. I guess it's worth a try.

It depends on the condition. If you get some noticeable tearing and dirt discoloration they'd be more likely to throw it away or James the Overnight Stocker might just pocket it himself.

On a related note, I did see a plastic water bong at the local goodwill. It was mixed in with a few pool toys so I assume they thought it was a retarded diving stick.

Why can't we all just get a bong?

Hilarious. Imagine if marijuana really was illegal and the cops actually had to chase people around to try to stop them from smoking it! Think about what idiot's they'd look like.

you have to shake it with salt and alcohol, if you want to try something that will work when it sits in it, try this stuff called "purple power". My buddy thinks it is industrial floor wax remover.

Try Pine Sol. I was amazed at how well Pine Sol and hot water did at cleaning my an acquaintance's pipes and bongs. For hevily 'soiled' items, soak 'em for a few hours. Might want to either use a covered bowl/bucket, or clean 'em outside. Pine Sol is has a pretty pungent odor.

Use a ziploc bag so you don't have to worry about damaging the glass while shaking it. Just dump enough alcohol to submerge it then cover it in salt and shake vigorously. You can leave it for about 15-30 minutes and it'll eat away at anything in there.

Mix warm water and oxiclean in a tub. Submerse your glass in it over night. Rinse with room temperature water.

Abox: They took my underwear and they won't take a bong?

Nice one! Goodwill takes some stuff that you'd never think they would take and then turn down stuff that makes sense for them to take.

A couple of years ago I brought in a box full of VHS tapes. The guy looked at them and said they couldn't take them. Tapes were in good quality and they were decent movies. They didn't want to take the chance that something else was on them.

Ended up donating them to a local rehabilitation home. They were grateful and still got a tax write for a charitable donation.

Soak it overnight in undiluted Simple Green. Works like a voodoo charm.

Does the salt react with the alchol in a chemical way to clean the resin, or is the salt used just as an abrasive, and the alcohol breaks down the resin?

Why? Did they dust it for prints? It's not like an explosive item was donated.
I'm pretty sure this wouldn't happen on the West Coast; if they called the police wouldn't show up. They have real crimes to solve and sh*t.

we have a town-wide garage sale every April. one year a retired neighbor scored a bong she mistook for a vase. i didn't have the heart to tell her why other people were chuckling and making comments while she stood there just absent mindedly swinging it back and forth, all fat & happy on a sunny day.

nomorelurking: yes immersion will work. maybe get yourself some pipe cleaners from a tobacco / newstand to help along the way. do not force, tap it lightly.

The salt's just an abrasive. It doesn't dissolve in alcohol.

Cops there solve crimes? Here they just act like dickholes and tell you to call your insurance company.
