Another illustration of how tone deaf the GOP is now. You'd think student loans of all things would be a no-brainer for any politician to support, but not these idiots.

Hell, yesterday, McConnell finally expressed support - as long as it was paid for by cuts elsewhere. Too bad he didn't feel the need to pay for two wars, a Rx drug debacle, and unnecessary tax cuts.

I can't wait for the hip hop session Romney will have with the kids at Oklahoma Tech next Thursday, MC'd by James O'Keefe. May he get get Ted Nugent to play some some mad rifts. Kids love the Nuge because he reminds them of the crypt keeper.

Romeny's kids, Happy, Bif, Preibus, Tag and Williard Jr. will be there making it real and maybe the can judge a break dancing competition or something. Anyone can appeal to the youth vote, it isn't that hard.

Limbaugh was talking about this recently, brought Fluke's remarks into it, and his point was essentially, "And now she wants other people to pay for her education too."

Not sure he understands what a "loan" is. Maybe if we call up examples of below-market subsidized loans for giant corporations he'll be able to understand it.

"But...those corporations are people. Not dirty smelly filthy hippie college students."

So yeah Mittens, you're gonna rock the youth vote with that "get off yer ass and WORK for a change" approach. Don't forget to wear your solid gold cufflinks.

I think student loans should be charged the same interest rate banks were able to borrow money during the bailout.

So if these loans are loaned out with interest... and then people either have to repay them or suffer a fate worse than death... don't these instruments run a profit?

Of course, lots of people who went to college in the 80's got to shirk their debts without reprisal.

As an irrational conservative, I don't like that the President is making an effort to reach non-rich Americans. I expect my President to be the most boringest guy in the room. The kind of guy who would start tearing up if you messed up his hair at a kegger.

I can't believe they're arguing that student loan rates should go up as a deficit issue. These loans are already going into delinquency and default at record levels. Raising the interest will raise the payments and ensure many, many more of these loans go into default in the future.

If the feds were suddenly on the hook for even a fraction of the subsidized loans out there, it would push spending over the debt ceiling overnight. Student loans are the next financial disaster waiting to happen and raising the rates can only exacerbate the problem.

The student loan interest rate is gonna double? So now it'll be, what, a whole 0.02? How very outrageous and worth spending campaign and legislative time arguing about.

//The issue with student loans is the principle, there almost isn't any interest. Above number is hyperbolic, but seriously it's like 1-2% and doesn't start compounding until you're graduated (or dropped out). Deal with it.

They are currently 3.4%, set to increase to 6.8%. Only subsidized loans don't generate interest while you're in school, unsubsidized loans do. Student loan debt is already larger than credit card or auto debt, and is largely held by those early in their careers and thus making less money. That's why it's a big deal.

You are wrong on just about every issue you just mentioned (you must be Fox news educated)

Stratford Subsidized is is currently 3.4% for undergrad and 6.8% for grad. Unlike other debt there its no way to default. Interest starts day one. Reading your "facts" it becomes very evident that you never had the need to look into student loans, so I guess your ignorance is excused

Yeah, people don't go into paroxysms over a small percentage increase in taxes, so why should student loan interest rates deserve a second though?
Hell, quadruple the rates on those elitist commies.

Spoken like someone who isn't really aware of the interest he's paying on his student loans. Try a current rate of 3.4% doubling to 6.8%. For those of you not in the know 6.8% > 2%.

Seriously though, the issue with student loans is that teenagers are told they need a college education in order to get a good job, but once they graduate there are very few jobs to be found, even with a science degree. So a young person is burdened with tons of debt and no job, and tuition costs keep rising, even for public schools. It's a huge societal issue that can't be summed up by "deal with it."
