You're right. I've been in denial. I should have realized it by the way I reflexively turn them off as soon as they come on. Also other bands are going out of their way to sound like them (Avenged Sevenfold, anyone?)

What can I say, I'm lazy and like to go for the REALLY low hanging fruit. Thankfully it's somewhat rare that I go troll those folks, just visiting the politics tab makes me feel like I wallowed around in shiat. Actually opening a politics thread and posting in it makes me feel like one of the stars of two girls one cup.

FeedTheCollapse: Foo Fighters have been there for a while. Frankly, though I don't really dislike the Foo Fighters, I don't really think they sound to wholly different from Nickelback, Creed, etc.. Maybe the Foos have better music taste, but it's generic "why doesn't rock music ROCK any more?" for people who have been out of the music loop for 20+ years.

I am really liking Foster the People, actually. They got me back into radio. Also--I think it's 105.3--the Philly/Jersey classic rock channel is f*cking awesome.

I'm like you, when I read a band list like that I can just feel the sickness rising in me, but I still like to keep my eyes wide open to other peoples taste in music. Some folks go over board with the hate, I just don't know when all that butt hurt turns into hating, but sometimes that shiat goes way too far. There's difference of opinion and then there's just crying like a biatch. I like AC/DC and ZZ Top, 'cause I'm a loser like that, but I can understand others not liking them. It's been awhile since I've been that invested into music I guess, I mean in the end, does it really even matter? I guess we'll just keep on acting like animals.

I'm over hating Creed and Nickelback. Creed's best days are behind them and playing a theater shows it. I could care less about them. Nickelback's music I don't really like, but it amazes me how they just manage to be everywhere, all the time, and it's been over ten years now. They just never go away or stop.

Nickelback-y enough to count. Where do you think they got their sound? From the Strip Club pioneers that came before them. ACDC is as one note as Nickelback is, yet everyone adores them.

Fark you for including Judas Priest and Motorhead on there. Those are two solid early metal bands. Priest has been putting out amazing records for 40 years. I just saw them on their Epitaph tour and Halford is still amazing. The rest can DIAF though

There are a lot of people in this thread that say people just hate Nickelback just because it's cool to hate them. Let me put forth another perspective. Every time I listen to the radio and a Nickelback song comes on, I am shocked by how much I don't like it. Every song of theirs that I've heard (by no means an exhaustive list) is, in my opinion, plodding, humorless, lowest-common-denominator awfulness. And I like rock music, or used to. The most straight-ahead rock band that I have liked recently is The Joy Formidable, if that gives you any sort of barometer.

2012-04-25 05:06:51 PM
It's one thing to not like something, or even hate it, but it's a bit suspect to purposely go do that thing just so you can complain about it later.

also, your favorite band sucks.

2012-04-25 05:08:21 PM

Points_For_Effort: opinion, plodding, humorless, lowest-common-denominator awfulness

'Rockstar' is not humorless. It's a pretty damn good song until it was driven into the ground and all semblance of life remorselessly sucked out of it by AOR vampires.

2012-04-25 05:14:36 PM
Rock bands I hate just for the hell of it: Buck Cherry & Nickleback for being sexist scumbags, Limp Bizkit for making terrible music (love me some Wes Borland though), Korn and Staind for making every mainstream band since 1998 write angsty lyrics, Creed for being so bland, Linkin Park for continuing rap rock, Van Halen for being such technically good musicians but terrible song writers (They should have named all their songs "songs for strippers"), any 80s hair metal in general including Guns N Roses, Def Leppard for writing stupidly catchy but horrible songs, and KISS for showing the world that you can have no talent but still be professional musicians as long as you can see your image.

Syllabic: babysealclubber: Madbassist1: Good lord, get over yourself. You have all those reasons they suck in your post, then list the White Stripes as one of your favorite bands. fark off, you hate em because its hip to do so, that's all.

I hate em because I cant turn on my radio without hearing them. At least that's valid.

Oh yes, because Jack White is so untalented. It's okay, you like a shiatty band. I love Journey.

Jack White is untalented as far as guitarists or singers go. I also don't really like his songwriting. People give him more credit than he's due because Rolling Stone has been sucking his dick for 10 years.

What?!

I didn't get that off either of them. Take Limp Bizkit, for example. Talented guitarist, but Limp Bizkit sucks. Sucking is an all encompassing artform. It's almost intangible. Scott Stapp makes Creed suck. And Creed could be any other heavy radio rotation band if not for Scott Stapp.

That's your opinion and you are entitled to it. I think Creed sucks simply BECAUSE they're a heavy radio rotation band. That's all it needs for me. I've seen a lot of bands go from meh to suck because of the farking radio. I hate to say it, because I think I'd like the dude, personally, but the goddamned foo fighters are headed down that pit right now for me at damn near lightspeed.

I think many people wouldn't dislike them so much if rock stations wouldn't just cycle through their singles and the singles of bands that sound like them constantly. I just listen to classic rock radio (when I listen to radio) now since they don't just play the same ten bands on a loop.

Pizzarock has little to do with strip clubs or the heshers of old. Pizzarock is an ethos. Pizzarock is about not giving a shiat that I'm 50 lbs overweight, loud pipes save lives. Pizzarock is about this fu*kin' goatee and kicking your ass, cuz this music kicks ass. Pizzarock is Florida of the mind.

2012-04-25 05:23:34 PM
My "cool story bro" story of the day:

One of the coolest, happiest, and in-demand bands I ever knew were -- no shiat -- a western swing dance band in the vein of Asleep at the Wheel. I mean, these guys (and gal) were constantly working, and had the most rabid fan base I've ever seen. And not just bluehairs -- they drew quite a few of the young 'uns to the clubs and dancehalls they played at. They've been doing the gig for twenty years, and can probably go on for twenty more. I love watching them not so much because I love the music (though I do) but because I love they way they do it: they're great musicians and they always put on a great show. They're pros.

The musicians all knew that they weren't creating art. Hell, half of them weren't even particular fans of the swing/jazz genre. But they loved playing music and wanted to do it for a living, and because they were pros, they brought their A game to every show. They weren't the best of friends, but they all liked each other and respected each other. They had fun, but they also had personal lives apart from the band. They had wives, kids, non-music-world friends, and all the rest. They've learned to have separate identities from their musical world.

I enjoy playing the "your band sucks" game as much as anyone else, but ultimately, as a listener, it just boils down to which sounds tickle my brain in just the right way. I also find that some bands and performers can impress the hell out of me without necessarily playing music that I "like" (Jack White is one of these). And to me live shows always trump recordings: I'll almost always give a band a chance live, even if I wouldn't buy their CD.

I'd go to see a Jack White show for the same reason I'd go to see a Mel Torme show: I like to watch musical pros do their work. I get the listener's pleasure of hearing good music along with the craftman's pleasure of seeing a job well-done.

After checking out a few of Joy Formidable's songs on youtube I gotta say your barometer sucks. They just seem bland, and the songs seem to lack any kind of real energy, power or strong emotion to them. Nothing about any of the 4-5 videos I checked out makes me want to pick up an instrument and try to learn to play it which is my personal barometer for rock music.

ModernPrimitive01: Rock bands I hate just for the hell of it: Buck Cherry & Nickleback for being sexist scumbags, Limp Bizkit for making terrible music (love me some Wes Borland though), Korn and Staind for making every mainstream band since 1998 write angsty lyrics, Creed for being so bland, Linkin Park for continuing rap rock, Van Halen for being such technically good musicians but terrible song writers (They should have named all their songs "songs for strippers"), any 80s hair metal in general including Guns N Roses, Def Leppard for writing stupidly catchy but horrible songs, and KISS for showing the world that you can have no talent but still be professional musicians as long as you can see your image.

Exactly how old are you? Angsty lyrics have been a staple of various forms of rock since rock has existed. And you can go straight to hell for the 80's hair metal comments. Stuff like that was what made the 80s bearable.

It's like there's a lot of rock music being made by middle-aged white guys that sounds just like every other song made by middle-aged white guys. And all of it completely fails to make any kind of impact on me. The music just washes over me and I don't even notice it. That shocks me. Not the music, but the fact that there are people making loud music with all the elements of rock music yet it is completely incapable of evoking any kind of response from me. Like one of these bands' songs could be on right now, and I literally would not notice that music was playing. It is amazing that music this (spiritually? emotionally?) empty exists.

Still dumb.

The collective animosity toward these five artists far outweighs their multiplatinum success; if you anthologized the three best songs from each of these respective groups, you'd have an outstanding 15-track album that people would bury in their backyards.

I giggled.

My problem with Creed and Nickelback has always been the vocals. The lead singers sound like they're trying to sing and take a massive dump at the same time.

2012-04-25 06:34:23 PM
everyone thought Creed was piggybacking on the mainstream success of Pearl Jam. That's what turned everyone against them. That's why they got punished.

Funny, I hate Pearl Jam, too.
