I know that article was written by Klosterman, but it still struck me as particularly Klosterman-y.

Repeat from the redlit thread yesterday: The only thing that could possibly be worse than attending a Creed/Nickleback show is reading a Chuck Klosterman article about it.

A flick of Stapp sweat? Really? I can't tell if I'm looking at his face or his balls half the time. I guess it doesn't really matter to her though.

Fact: The guy that did my drywall remodel in 2009 wore a Nickelback t shirt on the job. He was proud of it. Got it at a recent show at the White River Amphitheater. He said it was the best show he'd seen in years.

He also was real angry over having to set the toilet, he only does dry wall damnit. And he stormed off the job over something involving paint.

Creed might be tolerable (note - I didn't say good, I said tolerable) without Scott Stapp

I can't see a way of improving Nickelback except maybe

Like him or not, this Klosterman's wheelhouse, and what he really should be doing on Grantland. The few podcasts I've listened to with him and Simmons blathering on about something remotely related to sports have been painful, mostly because (a) Klosterman's voice is even more annoying than Bill's (a feat I didn't think was humanly possible), and Simmons isn't nearly as adept at navel-gazing over whatever meta crap Klosterman wants to, and the conversation becomes awkward.

Also, JCK is the best contributor on there. Hands down. If you told me he wrote the Bumf*ck County phonebook for BellSouth, I'd read it over my lunch. His piece on gambling addiction a couple years ago is definitely worth the read: Link

I'd rather stay at home and bash myself in the testicles with a ball-peen hammer than go to either of those concerts or read a Klosterman article. I'm actually not sure which one is worse, but "Killing Yourself to Live" was quite possibly the worst piece of garbage ever written on murdered trees.

As soon as I read that Nickleback was the 'most popular rock band of 2012', I stopped reading.

My girlfriend tried to make me buy tickets to the Bush/Nickleback show in Seattle this summer. I told her to GFY...she replied "Bush is opening for them so we can just leave". I told her there is no way I would pay for a ticket that would benefit Nickleback in any way. Fark Bush for signing on with such a horrible band.

Folks can hate all they want, but they aren't any worse than any other pop/rock band out there. This line FTFA "A better answer as to why people dislike Nickelback is tautological: They hate them because they hate them. Sometimes it's fun to hate things arbitrarily, and Nickelback has become an acceptable thing to hate." Pretty much sums things up.

2012-04-25 01:35:47 PM
I like both Nickleback and Creed, I think both are really good bands.

No. I hate them for a myriad of reasons. It may be Kroeger's voice, their simplistic song writing, shallow lyrics, reliance on power chords, etc. Choose one of those reasons. It's like they're trying to be AC/DC, but their one song sucks. I hate them, because they suck. I feel they are the shining example of why terrestrial radio blows.

Creed did their debut album? He got off easy, that was always the one album even Creed haters seemed to tolerate. I never thought they were that bad (although a little of Stapp's voice goes a long way), but by the time their final album came out it was pretty generic and unbearable.

I guess I always thought part of the reason that people detested Creed was that their One Song (Eyes Wide Open) was farking everywhere. It was nice, but it wasn't THAT good. Plus, those strings in a grungy song? Just wrong. The other major reason was that Stapp turned into a drunk jerk who sloshed through sets while making Bono look like a timid shoegazer.

2012-04-25 01:41:35 PM

babysealclubber: their simplistic song writing, shallow lyrics,

That's more or less why I hate them. I thought Silver Side Up wasn't too bad of an album, but after that I just started to really hate their songs. Basically it started with "How you remind me"...I just really hated that song and nothing since has changed my mind

I like Creed. The hate on Stap is pretty much because he was openly Christian. Nickleback however, does nothing for me.

According to the author, the most 5 hated bands are Bush, Hootie and the Blowfish, Limp Bizkit, Creed, and Nickelback. Of the 5, with a gun to my head and I had to pick a concert to go to, I'd pick Hootie. Otherwise, I'd prefer being shot in the head.

Considering what Hootie's lead singer is up to these days, I hope you like country. Or that you don't find yourself in that situation. That would work too.

I read the article until this:

The singer is gracious, thanking the audience after almost every song (he will dedicate their final number, "Reach," to the U.S. Armed Forces). He likes people, but only if they are physically in front of him. "This next song is dedicated to all the Internet tough guys who talk a lot of shiat on the computer but would never say shiat to your face," he declares before they play a tune called "Run Your Mouth." With only 1,310 followers on Twitter, I would not have guessed there were a lot of clowns trolling Eve to Adam, but I suppose there must be. I mean, the band does exist.

I love how he can't resist burying them because they called his type out on stage. The butthurt is palpable here.

Also,

Good lord, get over yourself. You have all those reasons they suck in your post, then list the White Stripes as one of your favorite bands. fark off, you hate em because its hip to do so, that's all.

I hate em because I cant turn on my radio without hearing them. At least that's valid.

At the Beacon, I sat in front of a 31-year-old man named Anthony Cona. He told me he'd once met the drummer and bassist from Creed in a Charlotte, North Carolina, hotel bar,3 and that both were extraordinarily nice, normal people.

This is how you remind me of why I can't hate Nickelback (full disclosure - I only have one ipod track, Leader of Men). I worked at one of the bars they often played when they were starting out. They treated our staffers and patrons like gold, they were not prima-donna d-bags like many of their contemporaries, and they weren't a corporate creation - they paid their dues on the bar circuit before the internet heard of 'em.

I don't like country music at all, but I really can't stand the other 4 bands.

I'd rather see any of the bands discussed in this thread together in one giant horrible concert then sit through 30 minutes of Dave Matthews playing one song, but that is 7th layer of hell stuff right there.

bark_atda_moon: Dave Matthews

I don't "hate" Dave Matthews (I don't like him either), but one of my friends works concessions at a concert venue and said that when he played there, 90% of the fans were of the "drunken frat boy" variety apparently, which makes me never want to be at a Dave Matthews concert.

/also, they all call him "Dave" like he is their friend or something

Nickelback is the quintessential boring pop/rock band, but at least they're not an annoying band. I can fairly easily tune them out. Creed actively bothers me and makes me all stabby.

I'm pretty sure I gave plenty of reasons, none of which were, "it's hip to hate them." I can't stand their sound, nor the whole "LETS GET REALLY DRUNK AND DOUBLE TEAM SOME SKANK CUZ ITS NOT GAY IF OUR BALLS DONT TOUCH!!!! WHOOO PARTY LIKE A ROCKSTAR!!!" culture their music invites and glorifies. Not to mention that their crowd is like the DMB fans, with more cutoffs t-shirts instead of Spierry's.

I don't think Bush was that bad and would take them over a vast majority of what is on the radio now. If Bush was aping Nirvana, then Creed was aping Pearl Jam. I don't find either of them particularly bad, even if it's not something I would listen to. Nickleback is basically a smarmy Creed, though.

Limp Bizkit deserves all the scorn they get. fark those guys.

CSB time...

My buddy and I saw Creed in '97 right after they released the single for "My Own Prison". I still remember him calling me and asking if I wanted to see them and I didn't even know who they were. After telling me the song they sang, I remember saying something like "Oh, those dudes who kind of sound like Seven Mary Three". Anyhow, I think it was like only like $5 or $10 to see them, so I agreed to go.

I will say this. They were freaking great that night. So great that I went out the next day and bought the album at Blockbuster Music. As great as they were when I saw them, the album was just kind of meh. I think shortly after that, they blew up and were on each and every rock station 24/7.

I can't really say that I hate them. They put on a nice show when I saw them (and it was cheaper than a movie ticket).
