Some people aren't built for jobs like special Ed, and the shouldn't do them. This is the equivalent to doing shoddy construction work because you've stopped caring, or not paying attention while dispensing drugs at a pharmacy out of laziness or boredom. When the passion to help has left you at these jobs, there is simply too much at risk for you to continue. You need to stop.

//fark thee coonts, I have no idea how, even with union protection, they haven't been fired

This is super sad to see.

On an aside, is the autistic kid in with general education? If so, that shouldn't be the case. I know it has nothing to do with what the teachers are doing wrong, but I wonder why that is, unless he's extremely high functioning.

2012-04-25 12:10:51 AM
Glad that teacher was fired. Sad the rest of them weren't. I hate it when teachers are so horrible they give the rest of us a bad name.

//Deserves more than firing, hopefully the public humiliation generating from this will affect them.

Holy farking shiat. This is absolutely mindbogglingly horrid. Why...... w....

there's a special place in hell for these people. Anon is probably gonna find these people's information, get it out there, and someone is gonna get beat to a farking pulp. My brother is 12 and I cannot imagine something like this happening to him, so I'd go up in arms over this if I found out that this was going on.

I fully expect some sort of hardcore karma paying a visit to those teachers. Stuff like this does not go unchecked.

Hmm. I guess One Flew Over the Cuckoos's Nest didn't teach us much of anything.

My son is autistic, and his middle school/high school program and teachers have been amazing, and deserve six figure salaries. Elementary, not so much.

Am also rooting for public humiliation.

So I watch the video, it opens up with 5 minutes of commentary of what a perfect angel his son is, 20 seconds of teacher talking about drinking wine, another 5 minutes of angry parent commentary.

Finally the 20 minute video gets to the relevant 30 seconds. The kid screams at the teacher at the top of his lungs. After getting my ear drums pierced by it, I'm sympathizing with the teacher rather than the parent. Yeah she probably should have picked a line of work she's more suited for, but that kid sounds like an unholy terror.

I'm trying really hard to give a damn, but it's just not coming. These people expect free baby sitting from the state for their special needs kid who is very likely never going to contribute anything to society. It's great that NJ at least segregates special needs kids from the normal classes, I know some states insist on placing them with normal students - But really they shouldn't be in school at all. They should be in a managed care facility, and the parents should be paying for it, not the state.

"I want an apology, not for me, but so one day I can play this video back for my son and say Akian, you didn't deserve anything that happened to you," he says in the video. "I'm not going to sue anybody. I'm not going to file a lawsuit. It's not about money. It's about dignity. This is to reclaim my son's dignity."

Ironic, since if I was on the jury, my vote would probably be, "give him whatever the hell he wants."

//wonders if civil juries could hand out executions at dawn for punishment.

Mega-kudos to the dad for taking the high road (for now).

Oh, memo to school supervisors: "an internal personnel matter" DOESN'T EXIST when your people are public school teachers and they have been DOCUMENTED abusing children. Repeat: You tell us what you told your teachers, and you tell us what they said in reply.

2012-04-25 12:42:44 AM
Those are some pretty shiatty teachers. Fortunately, they are the exception to the rule.

Something about the story strikes me as odd. Don't know what it is. Maybe it's the fact that, if all these things were presented accurately and in true context, our school district would have crucified the teacher and aides. Guess we're just fortunate.

2012-04-25 12:43:01 AM
Teachers shouldn't bully, but I have to admit that I have asked entire classes if secret government helicopters flew over their neighborhoods at night and sprayed stupid juice on them while they slept. I only bust that line out when a normally good class is being assholes. It gets them laughing, refocuses them, and lets them know I normally like them but their being intolerable at the moment.

/guess I should mention I teach high school

Those were my thoughts exactly. It's probably worth a quick "thanks for being great at your job, and better human beings" to my son's teachers. I'm overdue.

Lots of derping about "ARREST THE DAD FOR ILLEGAL WIRETAPPING!"

New Jersey, like many other states, is a "one-party consent" state for audio surveillance. As long as one person consents, it's legal. Being a minor, and autistic, I doubt any lawyer is gonna be able to say what the father did violated the way this law works, as he is the legal guardian. Also, any lawyer who does try is going to find it very difficult to get a judge or jury to agree with them that what he did violated wiretapping consent laws.

Could be worse. It could be a school, here in America, which literally tortures children with electric shocks (that video is pretty disturbing) and is still open today, and refuses to express any remorse whatsoever. The school insists that tying kids down and torturing them with electric shocks for hours on end is TREATMENT. Watch the video, it speaks for itself. And keep in mind, the hours of torture that left him catatonic for three days are all because the kid didn't want to take his coat off.

Then think, how would you feel if that's how we treated.... oh, let's say prisoners of war? They didn't even do anything NEARLY as heinous as this at Abu Ghraib.

It's perverse, and the fact that the school has not been burned to the ground by the community it's in - and not so much as closed down - makes me doubt humanity's worth just a little bit more.

2012-04-25 12:47:48 AM
I see this finally made Fark. Here's the email I sent the guy after first reading the story:

After having read (and listened to) your article regarding your son, I thought you might be interested in a teacher's perspective on your story. Then again, perhaps not- you seem like a singularly self-interested individual, so it's possible that you're uninterested in any viewpoint other than your own. Yet still, after having dealt with SPED children for years, I feel the need to speak up.

First off, let me merely point out that in today's world, "autism" has become little more than a word parents use to justify their own need for attention. Either your child is autistic, in which case it's hard to believe your stories of what a bright, happy, well-adjusted child he is, or he's not. And if he's not, then you're a lousy parent, because autism isn't a label to lightly be slapped on a child, just because you think it's cool and trendy. It's a medical condition, typified by anti-social behavior and diminished learning capacity.

Oh yes, I know. You're likely one of the modern breed of parents that thinks Autism is a super-power. But see, therein lies the problem. You want all the attention of and drama that goes with being fawned over as you insist that your child is "autistic", but you don't want any of the responsibility of acknowledging that real Autism isn't fun, it isn't cute, and it's not an excuse for you to blame your kid's teachers for his limitations.

Now, imagine you're a teacher, and you have an autistic kid in your class that's being a problem. And the parent, one of these smug, uniformed, self-delusional types, keeps insisting that HIS kid is afflicted with MAGIC autism, the kind that turns the afflicted kid into an absolute angel with zero behavioral problems. Now imagine that you've done your job and reported these problems to the parent. But instead of addressing the issue, the parent behaves like a lunatic. Imagine that the guy goes as far as to illegally record your conversations, then is such an obsessive sociopath that he spends his time combing through hours of recordings of you, in some bizarre quest to destroy your life.

How would you feel, were you such a teacher?

See, here's how it looks to me, as a disinterested observer: Your son probably isn't autistic, he's just the victim of a parent who spends every waking moment trying to figure out how to cause problems for those around him. And if you were to think about it, you'd probably realize that only a paranoid drama-queen would believe that a teacher would make up completely fictitious accounts of your supposedly autistic child's definitely autistic behavior. See, a normal, sane person would wonder why you were so surprised to learn that your son, who you claim to be emotionally and intellectually disabled, was behaving in a way consistent with autism.

But hey, I guess now I'd better start watching my back, lest you bug my car or start petitions to have me fired.

===================================================================== = ================

Now, back to this thread. Given that the Internet is filled to the pustulant brim with this chick:
deconstructingglee.files.wordpress.com
...I expect nothing but douchebags insisting that THEY THEMSELVES are autistic, and blah blah blah, ad repeato, ad nauseum, forever, amen. But here's the deal: there's a difference between being autistic and being an asshole. It's sad that so few of you are aware of it. Being a teacher is a hard enough job without some Munchhausen-by-proxy having lunatic wiring his kid so that he can try and get you fired by showing- GASP -that teachers are human beings.
