Let me guess, he's on paid leave while they 'investigate'?

Yup. He'll be back at work after a week's vacation.

Scott did not specify how much meth and marijuana was found, but he said the amounts led police to think the drugs were for personal use, rather than part of an investigation or an arrest.

WTF?
Shouldn't they be able to check arrest records, and the logbook for the evidence locker to know whether they were part of an investigation?

That is...unless cops just drive around with drugs until they need to investigate them on you.

Pretty decent article overall, actually seems like actual journalism may have occured at some point in there.

But, is it me or is this phrasing really distracting? "The incident caused less than $1,000 of damage, Nemminger said, but was fatal to Meyer's older-model car."

Really, "fatal"?

The first person to ever give me pot was a guy that later became a cop. Hmmmm...I wonder what he did with all his "evidence" he collected. Cops always have the best dope too.

Just wondering, wouldn't this qualify him for a drug test? If not, it should.

Could be wrong, but I don't think this guy is getting a slap on the wrist.

Iowa is a little more law and order and looks like he could be suspended without proof of direct involvement.

Only 30 minutes to process him, and no bond. Are they that efficient for every suspect arrested for hit & run plus drug possession?

The drugs, if part of an arrest, should have been in an evidence bag, and checked in with the prisoner. A defense attorney could have the drugs removed as evidence just from them having been lying around anywhere.

He's a handsome little guy. I hate to think what he'll look like in ten years.

My mother is an addict. She was once an incredibly intelligent, very beautiful woman. Now, she barely looks like herself. It's almost impossible to follow her train of thought though it boils down to she fricking hates. Every sentence is peppered with the words f--k and hate.

The primitive nature of treatment for addicts drives me nuts. The lack of mental healthcare in this country frustrates me to no end.

2012-04-25 09:51:44 AM
I'm not a scientist. I almost hesitate to express an opinion on what might be considered a scientific topic. I think, however, someday, science will verify that addiction is more than a lifestyle choice for some, maybe all, people.

I imagine in the distant future addicts will be treated with technology and innovations comparable to those we now use to treat cancer. There will still be A.A./N.A. meetings, of course, after all cancer patients and their families certainly attend support groups. But, that's what A.A./N.A. will be: a support group that is complementary to medical treatment rather than A.A./N.A. being the primary "treatment".

Yup. He'll be back at work after a week's vacation.

FTFA: "Singleton is charged with possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as hit-and-run."

We're always biatching on here, "Where are the good/honest/responsible cops," and "one bad apple my ass," etc. We've become so crass about the whole thing we fail to see the answer when it's right in front of us.

I'm the last one to defend the cops, but this guy's been charged. I don't know about Iowa, but in most states the paraphernalia and hit and run charges are felonies. It's entirely likely that this guy won't be back after a weeks vacation. Hell, it's possible he'll face prosecution (it could happen). If he doesn't, blame the DA, but his fellow officers didn't give him a pass, didn't cover it up, didn't make excuses and didn't let him slide on the charges. He did get released after only half an hour and without posting bond (which would never happen for John Q. Public) but that could have been the cops, or the DA, or a magistrate arranging that.

As far as I'm concerned, this qualifies as a case of "one bad apple". Good job, DMPD.

Except for this part:

An officer allegedly spotted marijuana in the car. That prompted a search that turned up meth and drug paraphernalia, police said. Scott said there was no indication Singleton was under the influence of any illegal substance when he was arrested, although a long time had passed since the accident.

Said solitary bad apple was not even given a drug test which I am sure all the upstanding boys in blue of the DMPD afford every John Q Public who is arrested for hit and run, possession and drug paraphrenelia.

So yeah, still more than one bad apple IMHO.

I hope you're right. Maybe I'm just embittered by Fark articles, but I read this:

He did say that Singleton was known as a "hard worker" among the officers on his shift.

As the start of the "Oh, but his history with the department is so good that we'd better give him a break. After all, being a cop is a heroic and dangerous job, and we couldn't possibly stain his record with this one incident" line of excuses.

Again, I hope I'm just being bitter here.

Funny, my first time was with a friend who later became a state trooper. He stole it from his parents. Both were probation officers. Ridiculous blonde hash.

Why are we not drug testing cops?

Every last person using a commercial driver license is required by Federal law to be part of a random drug testing pool yet cops are somehow exempt.

I guess driving a delivery truck is more dangerous to the public than carrying a gun and having arrest powers.

I have a very small trunk, so it would have to be either a very small hooker or I would have to cut her into pieces. Not that I've given it any thought; I'm just throwing spitballs here. Being creative. Thinking outside the box.

No, I'm not sure; and can't be. But I'd hope that's not the case. I'm trying to stay optimistic about the totalitarian regime, I mean law enforcement.
