They have Sriracha peas at Target. They are like wasabi peas, only you know, Sriracha flavored.

Yeah, sriracha's just a pleasant chili delivery service. I think its popularity really stems from the fact that it somehow hits the perfect spice zone for both novices and experts. So my friend who doesn't like particularly spicy things can put on a little bit of it, and if he overloads it it's not spicy enough to make him stop eating. But for me, I can slather the stuff on and it never gets that hot.

Sriracha is actually too sweet for me. I like a Sambal Bajak ground chili garlic oil/paste way more. Tons of heat, deep, deep flavor.

Meh, there's good and bad. I like it, but it tends to be overused. A lollipop is just ridiculous.

Yah, the Huy Fong brand has way too much sugar. I have one with fish sauce in it that is better IMO.

They're delicious too. Also a great way to clear up some space on a packed rush hour Metro. People can pick up that smell from across a room.

Agreed, IIRC it clocks in at around 3-5k on the scovillle scale, bout the same as jalapenos and tabasco sauce, which are about the limits of a non chili heads tolerance. But unlike tabasco, sriracha comes in giant freaking bottles.

I didn't know what Sriracha was until I picked up lunch at this Chinese restaurant with my Navy friends in San Diego. They would swipe a bottle when the needed it off the table. I think the owners didn't give them hassle about it because they spent so much money there.

2012-04-25 07:06:45 AM
Huy Fong sriracha (rooster sauce), made in the far off land of Rosemead, California by a Vietnamese immigrant using the exotic pepper known as the jalapeno. So yeah it's pretty American.

Equal parts sriracha/mayo, or sriracha/ketchup. Put it on stuff and eat it.

/So hungry now...

The taste is also pretty unique and good. Sriracha and rice noodles is pretty much the perfect base for any dish in my book.

I have a great affection for spicy food but don't really like the vinegar taste of tabasco, so encountering sriracha and the various chilli/bean paste sauces common in South Asia was something of a revelation for me. The variety of flavors you can create by mixing them with different amounts and types of soy sauce has really expanded my cooking, too.

I like to point out that Rooster Sauce is the Most American Thing In the World.

Not only what you said, but the label is in english, spanish, french, vietnamese, and chinese and recommended for "pasta, pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, and chow mein".

That it has a Kosher hechsher seals the deal.

I very much agree. It's like a sweet and spicy pepper ketchup. And I do use it on damn near everything. Mix it with sour cream and you have a very simple yet tasty dip for tortilla chips. Add it to alfredo sauce with some chicken and mushrooms and you get an awesome spicy cream sauce for pasta.

/sounds fat, I know

Egg-zackly. Rooster Sauce and Frank's Red Hot also have excellent flavors, at least as a condiment. As someone said above, Tabasco is too vinegary to be a true condiment, but it's better for cooking in my book.

Wow. You learn something new every day. Huy Fong was the name of the ship on which the founder of the company came to America. Linky.

Where do you get that inthe US?

I have tried making my own, and it isn't quite the same as I would get in indoensia.
