There's some industrial-strength butthurt in this thread.

They can not maintain their pace.

Like the first Apple/Mac push, once consumers find cheaper alternatives and more open structures become consumer friendly the Apple shine will wear off. It may take 5 years+, but walled gardens never stay at the top.

bingethinker: zvoidx

Nothing would happen if the people who actually make their products were given more money. The only consequence would be lack of a hyper-endorphin rush for the top execs and/or a feeling of rage of how that money should be theirs.

Greed is insane. It has nothing to do with actual money.

You could apply this to any company anywhere in the world. Take off the blinders, put down the Kool-Aid, and try to think for yourself for once.

What Kool-Aid are you talking about? Someone is opining on corporate greed. The article in question is about Apple. Is that wrong? Why the fark do you feel the need to defend these corporations?

poughdrew: To put things into perspective, IBM's 1Q profit was roughly the same as Apple's, with a profit margin of about 45%... I can't believe I just typed "roughly" for something like $500M.

nope. ibm was 3.1B, apple was 6B.
ibm
apple

Fark U: You could always "be patriotic" and "an informed consumer" and not buy products from such companies.

/peer pressure and need to fit in too strong.
//apple product free.

My phone's so old it was actually made in a 1st-world country. People get really pissed off about that because they always expect me to whip out some non-apple phone also made in China whenever I make fun of their iPhones, as if they're expecting me to be a hypocrite to validate their horribleness.

That being said, I've heard that Samsung phones are still made in decent working conditions. I suppose I'll go Samsung if this brick ever dies.

/it won't.
//8 years old and still going strong.
///Battery is getting old and only lasts 7 days on a charge now though
////still 7 times longer than a smartphone battery!!

zvoidx: gilgamesh23: zvoidx: Why can't the people who make the products at least be given shares as a bonus/become shareholders?

It's really bullshiat that Apple is the most valuable company in the world, yet the people at top have a gripping, illogical fear to do what's right.

You can't compete on equal footing if you want to do what's right. If you're Apple, maybe you can afford that, but you're still selling yourself short. There will always be a less ethical company/CEO willing to come in and undercut you and a buying public to overlook their practices. And a world trade paradigm -- and organizations -- that ignore everything but price.

Exactly; an inconsequential to Apple, extra amount of money could greatly help the people working shiatty conditions for shiatty pay.

shiate: zvoidx: blah blah blah

what evidence do you have of greed? the fact that they follow industry norms? by that logic, everyone in business is greedy. or is it just the fact that they're successful that makes them greedy? is exxon also greedy? they make more than apple. i assume you're calling for them to give shares and money, or at least were when they were the most valuable company in the world.

Of course Exxon is greedy. Apple is now ranked number 1 in market capitalization:

The story is about Apple. Apple, the number one company in the world, has workers via Foxconn that get shiat pay and long hours. It's indefensible and inexcusable.

I can't believe I have to go on here and debate this. Seriously, you think this okay?

What level of smug have you attained where you think you 'have' to write self-righteous platitudes like this on a machine with parts undoubtedly made by Foxconn while remaining hilariously oblivious to the irony? Your service economy job and your leisure time you use to pretend to give a shiat about people in other parts of the world are subsidized by slave labor. Your whole existence and culture wouldn't be possible without slave labor (mine too, but at least I have the temerity to admit I don't give a fark). Put your money where your mouth is, you hypocrite. You are as much a part of the problem as everyone else, and as averse to changing your lifestyle to fit your haughty ideals as every other western, middle-class white dilettante. idealism is for idiots, and nothing is fair; welcome to earth.

hoihoi8: Or you know, an American company could hire Americans instead.

Clearly, you are well-versed in supply-side economics and the concept of legacy costs of American workers, to say nothing of being fine with paying $5000 for the same thing you bought last year for $500.

And you also know a lot about America's robust and burgeoning manufacturing sector (probably politics as well; I bet you think Ron Paul could have this changed with a snap of his crusty, out-of-touch fingers).

So when does Congress introduce an obscene profits tax to take some of that money?

AAPL is delicious.

I love making money off of all these hipster igadget addicts.

harm dealer: Unless my maths is completely off (not guaranteed) that would make their profit margin 29.6% which is insane considering the current economic climate and the types of products they sell. Really makes Sony look stupid - they haven't turned a profit since 2008 even though they have a presence in so many market segments (and make some genuinely good stuff).

Sony has been full of stupid since, oh, I dunno, the moment they lost the VCR format wars and learned nothing, continuing to develop orphaned formats that basically nobody else used. Another sad thing is that they are losing money while their less flashy rival Panasonic is still profitable.
