NIXON YOU DOLT!!!!!: LincolnLogolas: A subsidized student loan means the government foots the bill for the interest,

And that is only while the student is actively attending school more than a minimum number of hours.

And not all student loans are subsidized.

Yeah. I have both Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized. Watching the interest accrue and be capitalized back into the loan while on forbearance because the only job I could find was $8.50/hr was not fun. Luckily I stayed away from the student loans from banks, unlike my brother.

How he talked our dad into co-signing the loan from Wells Fargo I'll never know, because now my bro is delinquent and my dad is getting the creditor calls...

Limbaugh laid into the law student, saying that "contraception isn't enough" and that "some people want their education paid for by other people too."
I am glad Limbaugh admits he is against public education. I have brought that Republicans are against public education and I was attacked for it being a "strawman" argument.

So are the right wingers going to attack Limbaugh for his stance against public education?

Click Click D'oh: If your argument is that single party dominated legislatures that can push through their will without honest debate are bad, there's no argument from me there. But pretending that things like ALEC are GOP only is bullshiat. Also, pretending that ALEC is the problem, and not the people in office is also bullshiat.

I don't roll with 'both sides are bad', but I can see where you're coming from. I'm copacetic.

Weaver95: I even underlined it. effective from 1998, you CANNOT discharge your liability from student loan repayment via bankruptcy. unless of course you can prove 'undue hardship' and good luck doing THAT!

Considering how easy it is to get a deferment, I'd say that proving that eventually paying it off would somehow ruin you, I'd agree that it's probably pretty hard to get completely written off...

fter rereading her tweet, Limbaugh said, "Sandra Fluke is just a poor, uh, isolated alone little college student worried about her contraception at Georgetown. But n ow she's represented by the flacks in the White House-Hilary Rosen Anita Dunn-and they're coordinating with Obama, scaring students about the interest rates on their student loans."

This rant makes no sense, and I've got nothing, so here is a pic of rush dressed as a cheap streetwalker.

"Students and parents have suffered 300% increase in tuition fees over the last 10 years in California while university administrators have gotten sweetheart deals. The CSU Trustees just approved a $400,000 salary for the San Diego State President while increasing student fees by 12%."

It's disingenuous to be baiting students about interest rates when tuition costs are rising faster than inflation.

Keizer_Ghidorah: Mikey1969: mark12A: Tell me again why I'm supposed to help subsidize other people's promiscuity....

You DO realize that people in committed, monogamous relationships use BC, right? If my wife didn't use BC, she would have had a kid every year since she started having sex, she gets pregnant so easy, it's like all you have to do is walk by her on the right(wrong?) day... As a result, she uses BC, and she has gotten pregnant on the pill twice, once on the rods inserted in her arm, and once on the Nuva ring, so it requires an IUD, which is more expensive than the rest, and requires a medical procedure to install.

So no, you wouldn't be subsidizing her promiscuity, no matter how many times your Rush Limbaugh Singing Bass tells you so, you would actually be ensuring that I didn't have 15 kids and need to go on Welfare to try and raise them all. Instead, I only have 3.

The answer to this, of course, is either "Tell your wife to stop opening her legs so much" or "Then get your balls cut, idiot".

People who want to control others' sex lives don't care about any "excuses", you either do what they want you to do or you're a demon slut money-gobbling beast.

I'll never be able to understand the cognitive dissonance required to think that BC is more of a tax burden than a bunch of extra kids, especially those who were unwanted because their parents knew they couldn't provide, running around. They'd rather pay for school, emergency medical services, etc. for 5 kids than birth control for one woman?

Greater access to birth control means fewer abortions. Conservatives, why do you hate fetuses so much?

austin_millbarge: mark12A: Tell me again why I'm supposed to help subsidize other people's promiscuity....

Because there are probably plenty of things you agree with that other people don't want to subsidize, but we do anyway. It's called living in a civilized society where people make compromises in order for people of varying beliefs to live lives of contentment.

Indeed. Tell me again why I'm supposed to subsidize needless wars, torture, indefinite detentions, warrantless domestic spying, oil companies, big agriculture, insurance companies, etc.

Both are hurting students. The federal government doesn't have the power to regulate what CSU presidents get paidor what CSUs charge for tuition. They do, however, have the power to subsidize student loans and regulate interest rates.

badaboom: But in the past people used to save up for things like cars and college. Imagine that.

No. In the past, children of wealth and privilege went to school. The working class went to the factories.

Then we socialized primary education, so that everyone could get a fair shot at contributing something to the world, so then it was only children of wealth and influence going to college. Then high school became good for naught more than minimum wage in many cases, and we recognized it benefited us all as a society to give those who couldn't afford it access to HIGHER education. Only this time, we didn't socialize, we just guaranteed them access to the funds, which they later have to pay back..........

and this is a bad thing why?

Mixolydian Master: So Rush is cool with the Federal loans increasing drastically and benefiting the government? I thought Repubs were all low taxes, rates and interest. Get the government out of my bank and wallet mentality. I don't understand these farkmooks at all

I suspect there are many things you don't understand.

Why is Government in the business of student loans in the first place? It's a bad idea, and they're farking up higher education.

Look at all the retards in Occupy; I remember loads of them protesting their student loans, like the dumbass who borrowed $30,000 to get a degree in puppetry.

That's what educated people, who we call Republicans, mean when they say the Federal Student Loan Program is distorting markets. It causes people to make decisions they would never make with their own money. If Mr. Puppet Major were doing summer construction work and waiting tables to get that scratch, I bet he would have spent it more wisely. Even if he picked a stupid major; he wouldn't have that debt on his back.

And the Feds endlessly pumping cash into colleges has caused industry specific inflation - so every time they increase funding tuition goes up. All that is accomplished is that the kid graduates with a bigger debt burden. Look at what a great job they did pumping money into housing.

And of course; Universities have been lowering standards to get in on all that cash. So kids get less education, a watered down degree, and a mountain of debt. It's a disaster.

Tuition loans subsidize these non-market driven increases and the money appears to going to pay professors 80% of their $250,000 salaries at retirement.

Here in Cali the UC regents are suing to have their retirement pay based on their last year of salary in spite of the union agreement to use the max of $250,000. 1%' ers teaching the 99%'ers to not look behind the curtain but rather gripe at Wall Street while they get paid like bankers today and retire with more secure pension and medical benefits.

There was a flap about some alleged Catholic leader angry about one of Jon Stewards graphics. He is going after the large corporate advertisers on Comedy Central. But we are talking about demographic blocks that don't match.

Here it is, Rush is representing old monied or better-off Republicans, and anything he can say to piss off "liberals" is icing on the cake. He does not and will never represent the young leftwing political interest.

Rush when given attention will look to offend people and until he gets nailed for something rich powerful white people can go to jail for, or he says something that crosses the line in an unforgettable fashion, he won't die.

He represents the rich old white man block and he will stay until he just can't anymore. Just as Jon Steward will be able to get the audience to laugh at funny bad taste graphics without consequence unless he crosses a line, which considering he has a writing staff and good judgement, is unlikely.

/But I don't see how this is not class warfare.

meat0918: Let me get this straight.

Getting $40 billion extra per year in revenue from millionaires is bad and evil and won't put a dent in the deficit and has been blocked by Republicans, but gaining an estimated $0.58 billion per year (taking the $5.8 billion and dividing by ten) from doubling the student loan rate is A-OK with Republicans, because we have to cut spending and raise revenue from sources other than those that can afford it?

Actually, the figure in $3.2 billion - less than a tenth of what you said.

And taxes in America are already much, much too high. We need to be moving in the opposite direction; tax cuts, spending cuts, eliminating entire programs and departments, and deregulating.

GT_bike: I agree in theory, but I was commenting on the BS that quality educations only come from high priced schools. Also, I just commented that tuition is rising faster than inflation.

I didn't mean to infer that quality education only comes from high priced schools, although I see how you could get that from my comment. Sorry for the ambiguity.

I consider state universities quality education, especially good research schools. Taken a look lately at out of state student rates? shiat's expensive. And even at the in state rates, let's take UCF for example...annual tuition is around$4,500 just for credit hour tuition for a 12 hour load. This does not account for the cost of housing, books, materials, and all of the other necessities of life.

So, even at state resident rate (which are themselves subsidized by state taxes), you're shelling out probably somewhere around $20,000 for a degree. That is a significant chunk of change for a LARGE percentage of our population to come up with. Add in a family with 3 or 4 kids.......

I have 3 children, and am right around the 51st percentile income wise, and guess what....it is a farking struggle for me to pay into the prepaid college program for each of them.....and that is for the fund that will pay for 2 years at community college followed by two years at university.

So....forget the ridiculouse, elite, expensive schools. Quality education even at a state school, already subsidized by tax dollars, is still out of reach for a lot of folks. The world needs ditch diggers too...but it only needs so many!

I am all for everyone having access. Problem is that the subsidies have led to obscene college tuition. All this is doing is lining the pockets of the universities at a real cost to society. Want to see tuition drop to affordable levels that people can afford. End the subsidies. Make it harder to get loans. Same problem that affected the housing market. And we see where that led.

Which is an entirely excellent reason to raise rates so the ones that borrowed smartly (and intend to pay it back) will shoulder the burden, while the witless farks that owe $80k for a lit degree -still- won't pay it back.

It is so clear to me now. Thanks.
