Rev. Skarekroe: I'm only posting this because I couldn't find a picture of Terry Gilliam in the Monty Python "Most Awful Family In Britian" skit.

Maybe someone can help me out here. I loathe American baked beans, they are texturally ok, but they have a load of brown sugar in them. From the the photo in the article, it appears British baked beans are savory, in a tomato sauce. Can anyone tell me if there's a difference.

Imagine a perfect steak, porterhouse, strip, whatever is your ideal cut. Now imagine it perfectly seasoned, grilled exactly the way you like, and then, dump a cup of raw sugar on top. That's what every barbecue I've ever had tastes like. And don't get me started on the goons who like pineapple, honey, and sugar on a HAM. Ham is savory, salty, smoked perhaps, it should never be candied. And if you get applesauce anywhere near my pork chops, I'll beat you to death with the jar. If you want to compare and contrast sweet to savory, that's what a salad or fruit course is for, not the plate with the meat.

Also God save the Bean, err Queen!

Don't care much about the royal family. I'd say "they can go fark themselves" but apparently they already have over the course of history.

FlashHarry: a million housewives every day pick up a tin of beans and say, "beanz meanz heinz."

The Goodies did wonderful things with those.

I've lived in both countries and had both sorts, and they're completely different. In general I have found that food in the US tends to be sweeter and/or saltier. I've been in the States for a year now and have since adjusted but when I first arrived the difference was shocking.

/and i have put on an alarming amount of weight
