FightDirector: ontariolightning: Polish Hussar: I was listening to the intermission report on satellite radio (they were using the New Jersey feed) on the way home from my grandparents' house. They were interviewing one of the original Panthers (he is now part of the Panthers' broadcast team) and he told the story of the ratrick, he actually saw it happen. Apparently the rat was not killed by a hockey stick to the skull. It was one-timed across the dressing room and it was impact with the opposing wall that was the actual cause of death. A day or two later they established a memorial to the ratrick by putting a toy rat where the real one had perished, circling the point of impact, and writing "R.I.P." in the circle.
/CSB

I remember beezer and roy being just pelted with rats in the stanley cup finals
they hid under their nets lol

which old player is the broadcaster?

btw i think scott mellanby was the one who shot the rat

Correct on Mellanby.

And if you'll recall...Roy was the one guy who DIDN'T hide in his net.

Video Proof, starting at about 1:21

Yet another reason why Patrick Roy was an insane badass (dropping the puck during a Statue of Liberty save on occasion notwithstanding).

Rat delay ticker was great.

Roy was a good goalie, far from badass. Got opened up by two goalies nearly a foot shorter than him, and threw such a hissy fit that a team had no choice but to trade him. Definitely not badass

No kidding. I still come down on the "Roy" side of the "Brodeur v Roy" debate for best "money" goalie, but that's not to diminish the amazing career Marty has had. He's not a #2 goalie, he's #1a to Roy's #1.

Roy was amazing. I'm a Habs fan, but I didn't start watching hockey and become a fan until after he was out of town, so all I know about Roy is his career as an Av and old videos/YouTube clips I can watch of him in Montreal. I'd agree with you on the "money" goalie comment. Not taking anything away from Marty (he's amazing!), but he did play behind a very stalwart defense for much of his career.

This game can make lifelong hockey fans question their fandom.

Are they even trying to win?

I'd argue that from '96-2001 there wasn't a better overall goalie. The only possible contender is Marty, and I addressed that above. Hasek was better in stretches, but never had the "big game" cred that Roy or Marty did.

And if we're gonna get technical, he got whomped on in the first Red Wings matchup with Vernon only AFTER Shannahan (lol) hit Roy with a flying cross-body block and injured Roy (shoulder). Fighting with an injured shoulder is somewhat difficult, and I can't help but chuckle (in retrospect) that it was Shanny throwing that hit on a goaltender...especially in light of the hit on Mike Smith by Shaw and the suspension resulting from that.

/Montreal treated him like shiat; I don't blame him for demanding a trade. His tantrum in response to the Habs treatment isn't a negative in my book.

So did Roy with the Avs.

Roy had more offensive support, though, and a more aggressive system on ice in front of him.

Yeah, I do remember a very solid D (Bourque, Blake, Foote) in front of Roy the year they beat the Devils. That was one hell of a team. Sakic, Forsberg, Hedjunk, Drury, Tanguay... damn.

Roy had a good-to-great defense with the Avs, but it was nothing as good as the Devils during the mid-to-late 90s. The Devils WERE the archtypical "defensive team".

I'd put Roy as a combination of the best of Grant Fuhr and Brodeur - whe his team played good D, he was amazing. When his team played run-n-gun, he could elevate his game to the next level and just steal a game he had no business winning. Fuhr had trouble with the first, but his Oilers team scored so much it didn't matter (see also: Chris Osgood, 1998-2002). Broduer never really had to deal with the second part; this Devils team, with Parise and Kovy, is the closest to a "run-n-gun" team he's EVER played for.

Roy could deal with both, which is why I rank him where I do.

Just so long as he doesn't have to make a Statue of Liberty save. Or really have to hear what Jeremy Roenick is saying.

That's the first I ever heard about the shoulder excuse... From what i remember he didnt miss games afterward, so meh to that. Didn't he keep playing in at game and give up the OT goal? Didn't he also instigate the fight with Vernon and challenge him to the fight?

And he could have easily demanded the trade without the theatrics and hissy fits.

Statistically, he is the best goalie ever, but as far as attitude and actions... He's insane and unhinged.
