As it has been stated, flipping around causes it to lose energy so it is better for a driver. One of the worst lookin wrecks that I was surprised not to see a fatality was Geoff Bodine's wreck at the first truck race at Daytona

I remember the Sadler Talladega Crash. He said, "I looked up and saw the ground. That's when I knew something was wrong."

If I recall correctly, an independent lab figured the vehicle impact on the rail at 135 G's for 1/100th of a second. After that the various energy absorbing factors of the vehicle begin to rapidly dissipate forward momentum.

The "body force" impact will probably never be published, but NASCAR and the University of Nebraska (where they do the maths) said it was "Well over" the previous record of 84 G's

I saw that the flagman was waving a green flag at first before he waved the red flag to tell everyone to stop. Does Australia use a different colored flag system than the rest of the world or did he just grab the wrong flag and somehow didn't realize he'd done so?

I saw this accident > Texas Mile 201mph wreck first hand from about a 1/4 mile away. I thought it was my friend SW in his identical UR Lambo, so I know the panic one feels when they think someone they know is in a horrible accident. This guy came away virtually unscathed thanks to a killer rollbar setup. Stay safe out there, folks.

The answer is "It depends"

Some race groups show the green flag at the first station past an accident to show that racing can resume, so if the track was clear past the accident, the green flag could be the correct one to show at that station. Other organizations SCCA/NASA would show no flag when it is clear to resume racing. You can see the flag stand at the inside of the turn where the accident happened waves the yellow immediately.

The Red flag stops the race, and this is not something that would be decided at a flag station, it would come from race control, and all flag stations would show red at the same time.
