There is evidence that they can provide positive services. For example the protein syncytin - derived from a virus - helps develop the placenta.

Good, if you're going to hang around inside my cells, at least make yourself useful.

I am the king of misrembered "facts" but I thought I read that there is a viral pattern in the cat genome that repeats many many times over and over.

Whose modern-day equivalent are evangelicals who seem to have a hard-on for the type of neo-Randian economics that the entire dystopia in the book is based on....

So most of your DNA isn't your own, you're outnumbered within your own body by bacterial cells, and you have no free will thanks to unconcious decision making processes.

I think science just ret-conned us out of existence.

Was that the premis of a really crap movie or tv show, something about a sentient virus or some such?

Doesn't this just check off one of the problems with time travel - that if we go back we'd die from some virus that only existed back then.

`
Meh, the DNA is all ours the same way that different parts of a car, built at different locations and times are cobbled together to make a 2011 model one year and a 2012 the next.
I guess the bacteria would be the interior carpet/upholstery fibers and layers of primer and paint on the outside.
Still not sure about the free wheel - if the car is moving and a will breaks free, who/what decides which way to steer? Hit the brakes or the gas?
Hell, we're just the latest model still in production.

Ohhhh, it's whatsernuts from Stargate. I missed it the first time as well.

She's one of the Ancients. SG-1 finds her frozen in Antarctica, thaws her out, and then everyone gets this horrible disease (it's OK, there's an insta-cure at the end of the episode, just like every other disease in science fiction).
