Actually, it's mostly a list of private drone authorizations. For example, it doesn't include the 174th Fighter Wing in Syracuse, NY, which flies the MQ-9 Reaper drones. My dad got a survey from the 174th a couple years ago when they shifted from F-16s to the drones because he has an N-numbered airplane, asking where, when and what altitudes he generally flies at. I assume that was so that they could tailor their operations to minimize conflicts with general aviation aircraft.

They wanted practice stalking aircraft to see how stealthy they could be

Isn't operating drones a bit cheaper for aerial surveys?

I also see a lot of colleges on the list, which leads me to believe that they are being used in some type of research or studies.

Yeah, most of these look like research centers or groups that are trying to save money on aerial surveys.

I assumed this was only non-gov't agencies that were using them.

You know, there are a bunch of people in this world who don't like drones. You don't want to be one of them do you? I mean, if you don't like drones, it might be because you are like them. Maybe little bit. You wouldn't want to be like them, so you like drones, right?

Replace with 'TSA goons' if you prefer.

I don't think it's a complete list yet, but something like that is probably covered by one of the broader military approvals that are clustered in the Virginia area.

I'm seeing mostly research drones from universities and traffic drones for police departments. But maybe Americans should freak out about this. After all, we've had very little trauma and drama in the last few days.

I doubt the CIA or FBI need to be on this list.

....Except that the actual *AREA* they are flying them in is the Adirondacks and surrounding areas, especially up near the border to keep an eye on those sneaky Canadians.

Remember the good old days when every global activity was accompanied by Republicans freaking out and jacking up the rainbow terror chart? Ah, good times. Now all we get is robot plane sightings. Booo-ring.

I live 12 miles from the US/Mexican border....in an area considered a smuggling corridor (both humans and drugs)....yeah, I'm pretty sure I've been "surveilled"(?) from space or near-space at least a couple of times...

I would be willing to bet everything I own and will ever own in the future, that the map showing drone coverage in the interest of "national security" is fire engine red over the whole of North America.

You know because terrerism.

Okay, so Richmond (specifically VCU) is on the list. Great. I feel 'safer' now.

Massive numbers of meth labs. My parents live across the street from one. I'm just glad that I'm out of Floyd County.

If you drive about an hour northwest out of Las Vegas you'll come to Creech AFB, which is the main drone control and training facility. You can see drones flying over that base all day, every day (and night too). And you can tell when a brand new pilot is beng trained because they can't land for shiat.

Spotted a drone when I was driving between Reno and Las Vegas, last month. Because I was driving a rental, I didn't have my 20 mike-mike with me, or I'da had a trophy.

Not to mention that Rome, GA is an anagram of "O, Gamera!"

I wouldn't want to be around when a giant turtle like that lands.

I'm a little disappointed that my area isn't being watched.

Pretty soon they'll transfer the minds of the dying in to the drones for a new life as an electronic security guard.

Meh is all i can say about this list. It doesnt really tell you anything. For example here is an article about when UCONN got their authorization

Link

The project involves using a large hobbyist remote control helicopter known as the Maxi Joker 3. UConn's investigator on the proposed project, Chengyu Cao, says the goal will be to research autonomous navigation and guidance systems.

Cao said similar research is under way at other universities, including Virginia Tech, where he says researchers are working on designs for autonomous fixed wing aircraft rather than helicopters. He added that flight tests at UConn will be conducted by his lab.

I was there in '97. It was just Indian Springs Air Station back then. Don't remember it being called Creech, AFB. Got to spend 2 weeks with the 99th Ground Combat Training Squadron. Had some real fun there. Fired more M60 ammo in that 2 weeks than I did my entire 4yr career! haha.

They were also training drone pilots back then. Got to see lots of them take off and land. Also got to see lots of A-10's practicing during that time as well. Absolutely amazing sound when that gun fires!
