jealous stranger but father of two graduates from john hopkins, launches an internet crusade against rapper, based on disparaging statements from jealous cousin -- all because dude was a rebel in his youth but still managed to graduate from stanford with both bachelor and masters degree and became a hip hop star in Korea, whereas cousin who is a classical violin player ends up working in a patent office, and the stranger just upset his hardworking daughters don't have the same success this guy did who doesn't fit the korean mold.

somehow, they succeed in convincing people, end up breaking rapper mentally and became a hermit for several years -- people that arise to defend rapper are believed to be part of a conspiracy, even though the korean police and stanford university has provided proof that the rapper is who he is and what he is.

Reminds me a bit of the birther movement for some reason.

that's the best summation I could come up with -- it's just incredibly farked up, and the guys that ruined the rapper's life are completely unrepentant.

It just goes to show how incredibly stupid the pubic is in believing anything that is posted on the internet.

Amazing how a career can be taking down by a jealous family member and an idiot member of the community because your personal style/way of learning is different from the traditionally accepted cultural mold.

It's not just the internet. People have been using newspapers, TV and radio to do this sort of thing for decades as well.

I think we all know at least one sick fark who delights in starting rumors and manipulating groups for their own pleasure. But they were always limited to the town or group of people they know. Now that we've got global communication, the only thing limiting the spread of their lies is the one in a million who questions what they hear, and they're often drowned out by the bleating of the herd.

Students also typically write a thesis to attain a master's, and yet Lee admitted that he never wrote one. (His program didn't require a thesis.)

Ahhh, so it wasn't a real Master's.

Still sucks that some jerkwad ruined this guy's life and shat upon his legitimate accomplishments (real or not, getting two degrees in less time than it normally takes to get one is still an accomplishment) out of petty jealousy.

The real question I have to ask after reading this story is where do we go to ruin the hater cousin's life?

It was an interesting story across a couple levels.

Haters gonna hate and sometimes be really good at it.

I actually stumbled upon a video of his thanks to Comcast's On-Demand K-Pop music video selection. I don't care much for hip-hop and I don't know Korean, but I enjoyed the tune.

Tablo - No Tomorrow

I think this was released more recently, so hopefully he's getting back on track.

I guess the American equivalent (since he lives in California) would be that someone plants a bunch of child porn on him and make sure that an illegal, prone to breaking the law, alien use his name as an alias anytime he gets picked up by the cops.

They did say he jus debuted his first solo album, and with rave reviews, but other articles say he now suffers of stage fright, because during the height of the controversy, he could not go out in public without being yelled at and getting threats and whatnot...

Great plan! I went back and reread again (I have a bad habit of skimming if I think while reading) and I don't think that cousin could come off not sounding like a complete jerk. I hope some form of internet karma comes around and bites him on the ass.

TFA says there's still a defamation suit pending and he has detectives on his side. I'm sure the media is going to make this very public and are going to be pretty keen on shaming those accused. This is culturally a big deal over there.

There are like 15,000 undergrad and grad students at Stanford. I like how Cho thinks that his reputation was so great that Dan got into Stanford just on his coat tails. Bonus: Busting his cousin's chops for being an English major.

/Should we start a rumor that Dan wen't to StaMford instead of StaNford?
// Dino M Zaffina would approve!

On one hand, this was a viscious and cruel thing to do, with tons of outright false accusations.

On the other hand, it's K-pop, so at some level it's justified.

2012-04-24 02:32:47 PM
When Lee walked in, he looked crazed. He was no longer a cocky hip hop star. His hair was a bushy mess. Fidgeting with an unlit cigarette, his eyes darted nervously around the room. People in the lobby were looking at him. I asked how he was feeling.

"They're saying I'm not me, and I can't convince them I am," he mumbled. "It's like I'm living in a Kafka novel."

That statement is absolutely incredible.

Despite the fact I love the Simpsons, you still didn't answer the question. The two groups, while having member overlap, are not the same thing.

What a farked up, nasty, hateful species we are.

The cousin doesn't work in Korea, he works in California. And has this to say: " "Great people of east Asia don't need you. We will own this century, and the next, and the next, until all non-Asians are essentially pounded to submission ... Of course, it is the mission of thought leaders like myself who will propel what will be united Korea in the meantime."

Someone should send that little tirade to his clients.
