Just looking at recent photos of Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher and I have to say the author has a point.

Confabulat: I never thought of that rat burrowing thing. I don't think it's in the books either. Patrick Bateman would have been proud of that one.

go back and reread the books then

so far this series has been insanely accurate

YES
I know tyrion isnt ugly enough
YES
I know that they changed some of the names to make things clearer for people who havent read the books.
YES
I know that some scenes are not in exactly the same order that they were in the book. thank god.

but things like the rats and buckets? pretty damn certain that they were right out of the book.
I dont remember gendry getting saved by the bell, but it is possible ...

unlikely: The problem isn't the actors aging. The characters age in the books.

The actual problem is they started with actors that were already too old. And they had to - you can't have your 13-year-old actresses banging horse lords on screen.

this whole article is such a non-problem. the goal was to adapt the book to the screen. there is no way to be 100% accurate nor any way to get around the fact that people get older and die in real life.

Rowling actually did a perfect job by having the children age 1 year per book. Worked perfectly for publishing one book a year. Kids reading the books would age one year for each book as they came out. perfect progression. same for the movies.

Good thing that the series didnt start until around the time book 5 came out or all the actors would have been dead before the series is finished.

/I love GRRM, but that farker has already said that he doesnt want the series finished if he dies. fark HIM.
/on the other hand, does GRRM even have a CLUE where the story is going??? :D

knightofargh: ha-ha-guy: What's killing me is all the Starks I liked are dead (aside from Jon Snow). Anything involving the North now is just "urgh" as I read it. With his next book I just want the ability to buy a copy that has the Tyrion and Jon Snow chapters in it (I know about the ending to the last one, but remember Fire Priestess) and forget the rest. Maybe Daenyrs as well.

I'm ignoring the series after wading through Feast and realizing I didn't give a fark about any of the characters in it save Arya and possibly Jaime. I might pick it back up after A) GRRM finishes the series or B) GRRM pulls a Jordan and the series is ghostwritten to completion.

After a six year wait, the shiat sandwich that was Feast wasn't worth it. I'm fairly sure that the Social Security trust will run dry before the next book is published.

if the characters you didnt care about were in feast then reading dance should be much more to your liking.

2012-04-24 01:34:08 PM
Confabulat: All the books are pretty similar in quality.

Much in the same way that the Wheel of Time books (pre-death of Jordan) were of similar quality. They just got hung up in detail to the point where the plot suffered. GRRM has a problem with taking minor characters and making them a new major player. Additionally his viewpoint characters are often genuinely unlikable and nearly impossible to relate to (Greyjoys come to mind).

2012-04-24 01:34:35 PM
Subdue their bellies: The burrowing rat interrogation was nicked from one of the Sword of Truth books. No idea where Goodkind nicked it from.

FRAK
I knew that I had read it recently. dammit.
Now it has me wondering what was actually in the books.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
or was that bit just left out of the book?
People in the cells heard screaming. Didnt see what was causing the screaming. Screaming people died and didnt share WHAT was causing them to scream. Anything could have happened. Fair enough.

2012-04-24 01:34:45 PM
PillsHere: I've been noticing that Arya's boobs are getting in the way. It's only apparent because she's pretending to be a boy and I keep wondering how they don't notice. I'm not saying this in a pervy way, but it breaks believability. I guess she hasn't fooled everyone though :P. Yah I know, have a seat over there.

I'm glad they aged up Arya and Dany. I never bought the 14-15 year old super assassin/warlord and think it works better if they look older.

2012-04-24 01:36:04 PM
auralpleasure: if the characters you didnt care about were in feast then reading dance should be much more to your liking.

I'm sure it will be. In 25 years when GRRM releases book seven.

2012-04-24 01:39:06 PM
Cymbal: Carth: Given how few of the children survive it isn't really a problem.

All of them except one, you mean?

All of them except Joffery, Robb, Jon (although he might be back) and like I said Arya and Dany work better as characters looking a little older than they are supposed to be in the book. The idea of recasting any of them is a bit absurd.

2012-04-24 01:39:07 PM
Cythraul: I don't want to punch Joffery.

I want to slowly boil him alive in a vat of oil starting at his toes and eventually reaching his eyeballs. But before that, I want to place him in a giant fire ant mound for a few hours after starving him close to death for weeks. And before that, I'd like to use 'the pear' on him repeatedly until his anus resembled ground beef.

Yeah, I don't like him very much.

Fictional character dude. Please seek a psychiatrist.

auralpleasure: if the characters you didnt care about were in feast then reading dance should be much more to your liking.

I haven't read Dance but the reviews for it are weaker than for the other books, often citing a plodding story and way too much descriptive prose. Concerns me a bit...

They'll have to ask the audience to suspend reality when watching this fantasy.

switch actors, they've done it before.

I really only see a problem with one.
The rest you can get away with their own natural body types or character arcs.

See, this doesn't bother me all that much. The dude created a world I enjoy and I get to visit now and again. This isn't like LOTR where there's an obvious quest set before them and all drives to that moment, be it success or failure. That's what I like about this tale. It's basically about the petty bullshiat behind family politics for most of the freakin' planet. There will be milestones, but there's no 'end', and for my part, I'm ok with that. I'd love to see some more books, and I'll read them but an ending just isn't necessary.

Feast and Dance were never supposed to exist. His original plans were go to right into winds of winter and have a 4 year gap so everyone could grow up. That never happened because of the cliff hangers in ASOS and too much of hte book would have been told in flash backs.

I really thought that the way Joffrey finally getting his due was unsatisfying. Choking on baked goods was too good of a death for him IMHO. Oh well, since it goes in with the theme of Martin saying he was trying to break fantasies cliches, I'll get over it. One of the reasons I like it so much is cause it is unpredictable.

Seems like it really shouldn't be an issue except in the case of the actor who plays Bran. Who knows what puberty will do to him, but the two Stark girls are portrayed by a 15 and 16 year old and Joffrey by a 19 year old. Are the three of them really going to change that dramatically?

You know, I keep hearing people complain about the same thing. Do you know that you can SKIP pages? That you can skim uninteresting chapters? (yes, a better editor would have helped some) If you find that you have missed things, that you can, SHOCKING, turn the pages in the other direction and reread a chapter that you have skipped???

copy that has the Tyrion and Jon Snow chapters
While I love the books, and I love BOOKS, this series would be PERFECT for electronic format and being able to resort the chapters.
When I reread the books before reading the latest book, I find it trivial to just skip the stuff which was YAWNNNNNNNNNNNN the last time I read it.

and yes, it was unfortunate that book 4 and 5 were split by characters and not by time. Would be nice if the chapters were reorder in a future addition, say once the series is complete. Or in the giant single volume electronic version .....

I do find it amusing when people biatch about a book that they dont like as if they had no choice but were required to read it.
I get it, you are sharing your view about what you liked and didnt like.
SHOCKING that you didnt like everything in a book. Everyone is required to like everything the same way as everyone else.

/insert list of book which are stupid and I will never read or finish reading
/dont get me started on confederacy of dunces. FFS, why did I listen to my friend and even start reading that book?? thank god I just quit in the middle.

dragonchild: There's also a root cause in that GRRM doesn't have a solid grasp of time to begin with, starting with each season lasting "years". I'm not gonna beat him over the head for this mistake considering most popular writers have a thin grasp of science to begin with.

Why would you think this is a mistake? The season could be magical, in which case science doesn't enter into it. Or their world could have a curious orbit whose mechanics result in seasons of varying length.

I'm quite aware. Didn't make the book less of a wasteland of plodding prose.

Fish in a Barrel: Except for book 10, IN WHICH NOTHING HAPPENS.

Over the course of 72 hours elapsed time no less. As the series progressed the timeframe per book and total plot progression decreased exponentially never quite reaching zero. There's a GRRM parallel there.

wippit: I wonder if the death threats are the reason Jack Gleeson says he won't be acting after college.

probably a good plan, honestly he's done such a good job as Joffrey that I doubt I could get past that initial instant hate in any other role he played. I have the same problem with the chick who played Nina in 24. No I don't write them hate letters or anything crazy like that.

Red Priests have been well established to have power to bring people back from the dead. Melisandre is the most powerful Red Priestess in the land and predicted Jon's stabbing well in advance. She is there at Castle Black and clearly has plans for Jon. I think Jon will be just fine.

Bowen Marsh is in for a big suprise and a real bad day soon.

Confabulat: I haven't really studied it but it seems like people travel all over these vast continents all the time, most of the time. That's not something you do in a week. I sort of assumed the series took place over several years. What's a "year" in Westeros anyway?

Assuming that days are 24 hours like is indicated, probably a 365 day year, though months are not mentioned. The weird long seasons probably indicate that whatever planet this is, alternate Earth or whatever, that the tilt is much different then this earth.

2012-04-24 02:12:31 PM
I haven't read the books, and the only thing I've been wanting to see in the series is more supernatural stuff. So far we've gotten tiny, baby dragons for a few moments that are too small to really do anything and some things with eyes that glow that you only see for a moment or two once or twice. Oh and a very short little scene with a single zombie. In a sword and sorcery setting I was hoping for a little more sorcery...

It looks like, judging by the end of the last episode, I may be about to get my wish! WTF?!?! That does not look friendly, whatever the hell it was.

Oh, and man do I love the imp. He is pure win. I hope he does well for himself, but judging by how the story has gone so far I'm waiting for him to get a sword through the face any second now.

doglover: But the fact you are specifically made uncomfortable by violence against women as opposed to violence in general, like that knight who was almost executed by force feeding of wine, means you're sexist.

Yeah, if that makes me sexist then I'm totally fine with that. I didn't like either one, but sexual violence just seems a little nastier than regular violence. If that's wrong, then fark it. I'm cool with being wrong on this.

alwaysjaded: And can we please round up all the dipshiats sending Gleeson death threats into a room and explain to them how to seperate the actor from the character? Gleeson deserves a nomination this year (as does most of the cast) and it's just farking retarded he has to look over his shoulder cause there's people out there that think GoT is a documentary.

Fair enough. Never really thought of it like that. It's just by the time you reach that part of the book, you REALLY want something bad to happen to him and it just seemed underwhelming. Martin really wrote that character well considering the emotional response he causes people, myself included. And the fact that HBO is really cranking up the loathing (the prostitution scene from Sunday), I just think that a lot of people will be disappointed he doesn't get raped by an Other or something.

Just ribbing ya. The best parts of ACOK are now about to happen so the rest of the season will be epic. Personally, season 3 and 4 is going to be must see T.V. I really can't think of any part of reading ASOS where I was bored. It was kind of obvious in Sunday's episode that they have to pinch pennies when Robb charges into battle and it fades to black and then goes to the aftermath, At least they are doing The Battle of the Blackwater.

More Tyrion slapping of Joffrey.

Oh, and just as a coup de grace, have Joffrey dragged by the ear to a nearby cornfield by a warrior priest, played by Bill Mumy.

And can we please round up all the dipshiats sending Gleeson death threats into a room and explain to them how to seperate the actor from the character? Gleeson deserves a nomination this year (as does most of the cast) and it's just farking retarded he has to look over his shoulder cause there's people out there that think GoT is a documentary.

I'd like to see Jack Gleeson show up on "Mad Men", considering the current complement of actors who have played (or are playing) dark, evil roles.

I was thinking of the "death" sentance from SHOGUN.

Bury him neck deep, place a dull bamboo "sword" in front of him and let everyone who passes by take a few whacks.

Fictional character dude. Please seek a psychiatrist.

Let me repeat that in big letters: JOFFERY

Do you get it, yet? Understand? Ya with me?

I normally enjoy your posts very much, but I have to say that the initial comment (please get past the filter) didn't do much for me and the subsequent explanation went wooosh !

Please explain?

I'm really tired right now, so I'll try. But it'll be in a bunch of short / fragmented sentences.

I hate the character Joffery with a passion. I'd like to see vile things happen to him (in the series). I posted my sentiments here. Some people have been posting how some fans have been threatening in real life, the actor who plays Joffery. Someone responded to me saying I should seek mental health. Hating the 'bad guys' in a fictional piece is simply a sign of being passionate about the work at hand. Better compliment to the author to want to see Joffery die in the series then not care at all, no? I tried to respond to the guy explaining that. Guess I didn't do a good job. End of explanation. My head hurts.

Didn't all of Robb's battles occur off-camera in the books?
