I think the Hunger Games was at something like 98% right until a few days before it was released, because they studios only let people who they knew had good things to say publish it. This isn't a number which means much right now.

The rotten tomatoes thing is only accurate in the day of the release. I have heard the promotion agencies will crack down hard on critics who post their reviews earlier than the release day (unless you're in the select circle I guess).

As for avengers, hopefully they are written well enough that I don't end up wishing the bad guy would kill them. Happened in one of the Iron Mans and in Captain America and didn't really care in Thor and Hulk.

the fantard apologists who would go to the opening of an envelope if it had a DC or Marvel sticker on the outside of it will no doubt love the cosplay porn and the fact they paid 25 dollars to see it....

My understanding is that they keep the ratings from professional critics separate from the ratings from ordinary viewers.

a couple of studies are doing this this summer. I think the general idea is that you give these flashy movies to foreign audiences, who lap them up. even if they were relatively bad, a foreign audience is often kinder because they will give the film the benefit of the doubt that they're missing something in translation rather than the movie is failing somehow.

the other film that i heard doing this in a big was is the movie Battleship though, so who knows?

yeah thats why i'm not sure exactly what the thinking is. It could be because foreign markets are now a much bigger part of the revenue from a box office perspective, so it doesn't matter as much where they open them? its an odd selection of films that are opening widely overseas. You've got your Tintin which you think "well, its more popular overseas as an IP" but then you have your "battleship" which is the US military fighting aliens on boats and Avengers which is a bunch of US super heros (itself a very US centered IP/concept) fighting aliens.

I'll be there to see it opening weekend, regardless of the reviews. Too bad they won't have Spidey available as in future installments. I'm much more interested in seeing what can be done after the first "assemble a team" story.

Speaking of the clip in the article.. Bruce Banner scaring Black Widow to 'see what she'd do' seems rather foolish. She's a very lethal person, and Banner isn't paricuarly immune to weapons when he's not the Hulk.. could have gone very badly.

Being in Aussieland I saw it at 2pm (around 6 hours ago) and it's and I think its an awesome movie. ymmv
