I'd be more impressed if he got the girl with down syndrome and the dwarf twins together for a foursome.

I like this phrase. I'm stealing it now.

Didn't any of you watch the video at the end of the article? ..

The reporter, from outside the dance while it was going on says:

"I peeked in just a few minutes ago and yes there was some awkward, SLOW dancing going on." (emphasis hers)

But thanks to one, sweet 16-year-old guy, Amber, 18, from Houston, Texas, was able to go to the prom like all the other high school teenagers last Thursday.

I wondered when Carrie would show up...

The senior prom was a largely forgettable event for me. Yes, the corsage, the suit, the dances, etc., but overall the whole thing was just a very expensive dance with people I saw all the time at school anyway.

I remember more about, years later, my step-daughter's prom. We paid for the dress, getting her hair done, all of that. Drove her to the school, dropped her off, got a call from her, went back to pick her up. She had walked in the door and seen that every last person -accept her- was in casual clothes (jeans, t-shirts, etc.). We took her home, she changed into casual clothes, and we took her back. We lived in a very barrio/ghetto/white trash-y school district at the time. The district, on average, wasn't that poor and we certainly weren't on the upper end of the financial spectrum, but wow did it ever say something about the area we lived in.

The point is I've seen proms that were much less than they were made up to be. For the girl in this article I imagine this is a major life event she will cherish forever. Gaydar aside, sinister plans to make points with other girls in the future, the boy in the article gave her a wonderful memory she will hold for the rest of her life. Good for him.

My wife is a teacher. She teaches seniors and is a Senior Sponsor. That means she has to go to prom, so I had to go with her. We both graduated 12 years ago.

The senior class voted for a boy with Downs as their Prom King. It was sweet.

Since the guy is still alive I doubt it. If she was in the mood, she likely would have used her superhuman strength to tear through him like a Kleenex at a snot party .

AmazinTim: I wasn't aware that loving your child and wanting them to live as full and happy a life as they are able to were mutually exclusive sentiments.

Honestly, how many kids with downs get asked to the prom in real life though? Unless they are at a special school its really rare, dont kid yourself into thinking people arent judged by appearance.

Soracloud: It is sad we live in a world where this is considered noble, extraordinary and news worthy :-(

I guess your brain is just that much better than everyone, would you ask out a mentally challenged kid in high school, not now but when you were a kid.

I Love Rooster: I'm more appalled at the mother's attitude of having such little faith that her daughter will ever have normal moments in her life like dating, getting married or going to prom than I am by anything said in this thread. I mean...wow...

Again, shes honest about expectations, unless she meets another mentally challenged kid the odds are rare. Christ some of you remind me of parents who think their ugly kid deserves to be the pageant or my kid deserves to play on the team even though they cant throw for shiat. Get over it, they arent special.

Oh man this thread has me in tears laughing so hard!
I have the damnedest image of them getting it on afterwards and her screaming "Potato!" as she came.

All joking aside thought it was cool of this kid to do that for her.

NobleHam: I'm sure it feels great that such a big fuss is made over her getting invited to prom. She must be so proud that she surmounted the insurmountable and found a guy willing to spend a few hours with her out of pity, who is now hailed as a hero by news people for having the compassion-balls to do such a selfless thing.

That was my thought too.

People with Down's Syndrome can and do live fulfilled lives. They can get married. They can live independently sometimes. It sounds like her parents think this is all she'll ever be able to achieve- and the part where her mom called the boy's mom back to say "Oh no, it's too much, too generous of your son to be willing to be seen in public for a few hours with our daughter"... blech.

This would have been awesome for her if it had been private. I'm sure articles like this treating her like a charity case feel pretty awful though.

2012-04-23 08:46:46 PM
Ok, so if you watch the video, the mother told the reporter that the good thing about home school prom is that "the kids can sleep in tomorrow morning"... uh huh...

that happens quite a bit actually.
in high school two of the kids with downs were two of the most popular kids in school in a completely non ironic way because they were both utterly hilarious and decent people.
a few people tended to take advantage of their disability to get them to do or say utterly awful and hilarious stuff, but then usually one of the larger football players would give them the WTF MAN? and it went away.
it was kinda like some honor system to not be utter douchebags to the handicapped there.
but the shiat those guys did to non handicapped kids was reprehensible.
strange world.
also, this thread is diamonds.
