I Love Rooster: I'm more appalled at the mother's attitude of having such little faith that her daughter will ever have normal moments in her life like dating, getting married or going to prom than I am by anything said in this thread. I mean...wow...

Yeah, huh? Farkers I can pass off as having warped senses of humor and generally coming off as more insensitive than they probably are in real life, however...

Actually, the girl looks pretty much okay, and the guy decent enough. Mom looks like she fell in a vat of potato chip oil, leaving me to wonder who's got the more severe chromosome damage in the family. Mom's comments make me think she was busy telling her poor daughter "Now you know nobody's going to ask you to the prom, because you're 'special' and special girls don't go to the prom or get married, so we'll have our own fun night at home..." and being genuinely shocked when an actual human being thought it might be fun to go to the prom with a girl in his class like any other kid.

It's a funny combination of emotion having a disabled child. People ask you, will he be able to marry, have a job etc. and you either say yes (then you get the head tilt, big eyed pity the poor soul she's disillusioned or if you say you don't know you get the you're a monster look.

Sometimes the parent just doesn't want to get hopes up or say anything out loud because it's too painful.

Soracloud: It is sad we live in a world where this is considered noble, extraordinary and news worthy :-(

It depends on what her developmental age is. It's really hard for an awkward teenager to relate to someone who is developmentally stuck in fourth grade, and that's why this is the adjectives you used to describe the situation.

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round,
or listened to rain slapping the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight,
or gazed at the sun fading into the night?

You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.

Do you run through each day on the fly,
when you ask "How are you?", do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed,
with the next hundred chores running through your head?

You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.

Ever told your child, we'll do it tomorrow,
and in your haste, not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch, let a friendship die,
'cause you never had time to call and say hi?

You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere,
you miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,
it's like an unopened gift thrown away.

Life isn't a race, so take it slower,
hear the music before your song is potato.

First, her mom might just be realistic. Downs kids are not all the same, the impairment varies a great deal. And you can't really tell from a photo how impaired the girl may be.
Second, the guy is a sweetheart.
Third, thanks to you farkers, I find myself with a ticket with my name on it for laughing so hard. Y'all are evil. And hilarious. And evil.

I think in that case the guardians go to jail.

Skr: This is a heartwarming change from the kids asking starlets out to their prom.

In both cases, the heartwarming part is the charitable intent. It's just in different directions, depending on the case.

I don't mind you hating on Great Britain for a good reason.

But Texas deserves hate, too.

That young man is really well-spoken. Regardless of his opinions, he made it definitely sound like he wanted to take HER to the prom, because he liked HER. Not because it would be nice, or kind, or because adults would pat him on the head (all of which are still true).

However, the headline was aces and I laughed like a hyena.

I think the coolest thing about the whole article is that it sound like the guy asked her
out because he was good friends with her and thought they'd have a good time if they
went together. He didn't do it to be known as the guy who was decent enough to ask
out the DS girl.

It was the parents who made it into such a big deal.

That being said, I think what he did was wonderful. They look sweet together and I bet
they had a great time.
