If only there was some book out there that would explain what was going through Stanley Kubrick's head while he was writing The Shining.

And why Kubrick decided to change Wendy from the strong woman in the novel to the whining idiot in his film?

I was cheering for Jack to kill them all - was that intended as well?

No, they said, "Room 222"

I had the chance to see the film at Sundance, and it's quite something. I was rather surprised it was picked up, because it is almost solely film clips with audio interviews, not even talking heads. The filmmakers said their lawyers were in the back of the room, just in case a cease and desist letter came at the last second. Still, quite interesting, with many crackpots talking about how Kubrick faked the moon landing footage (not the moon landing, note) and left clues in the film... A bit long of a film, but still worth a laugh.

I never really understood all the conspiracy about this film. To me, it is one of Kubrick's more superficial projects. He gets King's message about struggling with the demands of family life, sobriety, work... etc. He's added some visual flourish. I dunno, maybe I haven't researched it enough to go crazy over the details. Or maybe I'm just not crazy to begin with.

A friend told me a couple weeks ago that the that Stanley Kubrick filmed the faked moon landing and the Shinning contains clues, that if you're watching for them, show him admitting he did it.

Does the documentary cover that?

If you interlace the frames of this documentary with the negatives of Barry Lyndon it becomes a documentary on how Kubrick faked the moon landings.

This was intent to have Jack have a mousey, annoying wife was... He wanted Jack to be a guy already teetering on edge, whereas the hotel pushed him over... The crazieness that ensues, the viewer is not supposed to be immediately clear if its ghost, or just the annoyingness of having a family.... You can see how disgruntled he is, already just driving up to the hotel, which Stephen King hates that fact, but oh well.

Oh and the layout of the hotel itself is supposed to be purposely nonsensical and askew.

There is a lot of King hate on fark but the Shining is a brilliantly written book, as is Apt Pupil as a novella.

Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank redemption is an amazing Americana Papillion. The movie did not do it justice.

The native american thing is especially dubious. I mean, if Kubrick wanted to make a statement about native peoples, wouldn't he have just made a movie about it?

i watched a screener of the doc recently, and yes, it does cover the moon landing theory. its really quite interesting. the guy who presents it is concerned the FBI is going to come after him.

there are some interviews that don't really work in the film, but overall it is really interesting. MSTERMND (this blogger who has dedicated way too much time to the Shining) isn't in it, but one of his points is mentioned, and (I don't wait to spoil anything) he presents a way of watching the Shining and it is truly amazing to view it that way.

basically, if you love movies, and ever took a film class with people that were way too into analyzing things or you were one of those people, you should really enjoy the movie.

That documentary is called "Dark Side of the Moon" and on Youtube. Very well done how they connect Kubrick using NASA satellite lens technology to film Barry Lyndon in low candle light in exchange for using his 2001 Space Odyssey studio to fake the moon landing. And how the Vietnam war escalation was simply a cover to hunt down CIA operatives that had knowledge of the fake lunar landing.

Shelley Duvall was spectacular transitioning from an innocent and loving wife & mother into a desperate and scared woman struggling to preserve both her life and sanity

I'd post the link to the MonkeyAndApple YouTube videos of the Shining documentary parody Raul made, but considering how many Shining threads I've seen on Fark and no one else has ever brought it up, im afraid it might be legitimately too obscure.

CSB: I went to Yosemite last weekend and checked out The Awahnee Hotel to see how much it looked like the set they built for the Shining in England. It was pretty freaking amazing.

I half expected to see Scatman Crothers lying on the floor of the lobby with an axe in his chest. I'm still amazed at how much I felt like I was inside the movie. The red elevators and the big lounge were particularly creepy and cool.

I haven't heard all these conspiracy theories before, but it's interesting stuff. Whenever I hear someone mention The Shining, I think of the advert Channel 4 did here in the UK a few years ago when they were having a season of his work: YouTube (new window)

That breakdown continued to affect her for years. Constant weight gain/loss, obsessiveness, paranoia...I'm just glad she's (relatively) OK now. Kubrick was a great director, but a shiatty human being.

I'll have to ask her about this documentary the next time I run into her at the grocery store.

I heard he treated Tom and Nicole pretty badly on Eyes Wide Shut. If you ever saw the movie, what you see on the screen is probably the 2,000th take. I doubt he was even rolling most of the time. Luckily Tom and Nic's thetans were in order.

Interesting.
What were the other theories?

One person made several arguments that the Calumet Baking Soda cans, situated in the pantry/storage room, are indicative of the peace pipes (Calumet means peace pipe?) that were smoked between Native Americans and American forces. Later the cans are aligned in such a way that the logo is broken up, indicating that these broken peace pipes show that the film as a whole is about the Native American genocide.

Another argued that Kubrick wasn't able to make a film directly about the Holocaust, so left lots of clues in The Shining to indicate that this film was really about the Holocaust. Another talks about projecting the film forward and backward at the same time, and drawing conclusions from everything that aligns in the composited image. This is a bit odd, because the film was shot in Academy ratio, or close to it, and Kubrick centered a lot of his images so there are many instances of things "lining up." A bit dubious.

So, interesting, mostly crackpot theories. But a couple of the theorists were at the screening, and talked about their evidence, and were almost convincing (but still a little crazy). I had just rewatched The Shining, even, and it's not a great film, but the myth around it makes Room 237 worth watching for fans.
