having spent my twenties in iowa city, i can confirm this. however, as most of the girls in question are sorority sisters from the chicago suburbs, the viewing is usually pretty spectacular.

I happened to be travelling and was in a college town a few months ago. Blew my mind. I'd totally forgotten how awesome it is to have huge numbers of college-age women in town. When my wife and I retire, I'm going to do everything in my power to ensure that we live near a university (this will be Canada).

You mean the lack of women dressing like sluts? Yes - that's incredibly serious. We need more of that if we're going to keep functioning as a society.

Odds are they are probably basic white, cotton, underpants. But I sort of think, well maybe they're silk panties, maybe it's a thong. Maybe it's something really cool that I don't even know about.

What...what, I thought we were in the trust tree in the nest, were we not??

And for some reason I don't think most of those feminists have to worry about rape.

Don't post like a misogynist and people won't think you're a misogynist. The point of slutwalk is to underline that no one asks to be raped, not to conform to the opinion of white heterosexual men intent on policing women, you silly misogynist ;)

FTFY

But remember, any talk of 'prevention' will you get branded as someone who blames the victim.

To quote Amy Alkon:

The muzzle of political correctness -- intended to protect the feelings of victims -- actually makes women more likely to be victimized by stifling discussion about who becomes a victim and how they might prevent it. Interestingly, the bounds of political correctness don't extend to how we portray men. But, demonizing all men as deadly is like demonizing crossing the street because many people die each year at intersections (983 in 2009). A better idea is to look both ways. In relationships, this means assessing your individual risk for victimization and fixing feelings of low self-worth instead of trying to plaster over them with a partner -- a partner you may feel compelled to cling to no matter what. In dating, this means engaging your judgment -- not going off into the woods with some guy you barely know but also not seeing life as one giant "Law & Order" episode: "Hey, pretty lady...in the mood for a murder-suicide, or would you rather just see a movie?"

Or maybe guys could control themselves not to rape. Seriously, men shouldn't be like bulls to red and I doubt the very definite detail for "Hmmm...should I rape this lady or not?" is based on clothes. The guy was already messed up to begin with.

Are SlutWalks a thing again, or is Iowa just a full year behind the rest of the world?

And just like this time last year, victims are responsible for their own poor decisions, without it diminishing the blame that belongs to the assailant.

Don't confuse 'sociopathy' with 'male hormones'.

I've only met one person in my life who felt that way (that women who dress 'that way' are asking to be raped) - and he is a sociopath.

OH GOD WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF HOW POINTING OUT HOW MEN FREQUENTLY PERPETRATE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN MAKES THE MEN FEEL? Let's be sure to address this problem while making men feel comfortable that this is not really their problem while conveniently putting the responsibility of not being raped on women. I mean, it's in their best interest to blame them.

"a notion that sexual assault has as much to do with the victim as the assailant,"

That's not a notion, it's a fact.

Criminal predation is rarely random, but instead relies on a screening process to select the potential victim that will ensure the highest probability of success. This is true regardless of the intended victim or crime, for both men and women. The visual cues you send will be interpreted as either strengths, or weaknesses, including the manner in which you dress.

So, yes, the victim does indeed play a part in the selection process. Don't mean it's right, that's just the way it is.

A victim does play a part in being chosen to be mugged/stabbed/kidnapped/raped. But they never intend it. They don't jump in front of a criminal and say "Come get me!". If I were to walk downtown tonight and some guy comes at me from behind and stabs me for my wallet, I didn't provoke him. I just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and the guy has assumed I look to have plenty of money and unable to fight back. But unlike sexual assault against women, people aren't going to actually try and blame me for provoking the guy to do it.
