The most right wing major party in France was also calling for more controls on businesses.

I wish the far-right party in this country polled at similar levels.

Jean-Marie Le Pen, the aging former leader of the party (and father of Marine) looked on with pride.

Daddy has quite a storied history in French politics, having run for president five times.
Looks like he raised his daughter in his spitting bootstrappy image.

It helps that Marine hasn't managed to alienate as many voters as her father did. If she keeps a lid on the batshiat crazy stuff, she might remain a major player in French politics.

"Far Right" in Western Europe is like being a Rockefeller Republican in the US at this point.

So far as I can tell, the thing that gets Le Pen's opponents most worked up is that she doesn't like the virtually unrestricted immigration policies of the EU, which I can understand, since those immigrants are placing a fairly heavy burden on the social services of places like Britain and France.

The Constitution Party? Really? I don't think most would want that. Their party platform is somewhere out of Vlad the Impaler's playbook.

Um, I going to have to disagree with you here. There are some serious Stormfront-like parties over there in the parliamentary democracies. They don't usually get majorities, but they can be power players at times.

Sure, there's always loons that can get one or two seats.

Those folks didn't get 20% of this election.

What are the positions held by Le Pen and the far right in French politics? Is it like Sarah Palin far-right, Ron Paul far-right, or 1938 Germany far-right?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Le_Pen#Ideology

She's so far right she opposes the privatization of the Post Office and tax policies that include things like::

"Marine Le Pen denounces the current corporate tax as "a crying injustice". She claims that the main groups of CAC 40 only pay 8% of corporate tax whereas the small offices/home offices, the small and medium entreprises, the craftsmen and the shopkeepers fully pay 33.33%. She advocates to implement a flexible corporate tax according to the use of profits: heavier when the profits benefit the shareholders and lighter when the profits turn towards profit sharing, salaries, employment and productive investment, enabling a relocation of activities"

Yeah people tend to forget that not everyone in France was part of "the resistance" during WWII. There were plenty of folks more than happy to go along and be a part of the Vichy puppet government and it's policies.

To be fair, most of France that aren't Algerian descendants or the like aren't too fond of folks who don't want to integrate into French society, either.

People forget that the rest of the world isn't like the US's "culture development via absorption" society.

Cythraul: I've heard the existence of the 'far right' in Europe is a myth.

Let's put it this way - Marine Le Pen's father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, was the previous standard bearer of the party. That same father once said that the Nazi Occupation of France was "not inhumane" and that the Holocaust was only a minor part of WWII which should only be a footnote. He is anti-immigration and has been convicted several times of xenophobic statements, anti-Semetic statements, and inciting racial hatred. He's very popular among European neo-Nazi groups and white nationalists. It was also alleged that Jean-Marie Le Pen committed acts of torture during his time in the Algerian war.

These economic positions would be considered liberal in US. Higher taxes and profit-sharing?

I get it now. They are racists and xenophobes on social issues and communists on economic issues. As for defense, well, they are French.

CokeBear: "Far Right" european parties like Le Pen are opposed to immigrants, brown people, welfare, etc. So in many ways they appear to be typical Republicans. However, they aren't so crazy as your typical GOPer who advocates crippling the state with taxes so low that it is unable to perform basic functions.

Give them time. Once they realize cuts = hurting the browns more than anyone, they'll come around.

Not quite. Sarkozy was the incumbent. He was pro-austerity and part of a center-right party. In this election both the Socialist candidate, to the left of Sarkozy, and this Le Pen guy, who is to the right of Sarkozy, did very well on anti-austerity platforms.

Integration doesn't mean "I get to do what I like and call myself 'French' (or whatever)".

Integration means "I agree to follow the rules of the society I have moved to, regardless of what my personal beliefs are."

Religious people seem to have the hardest time of all folks with this concept.

France is quite unusual in Europe, given their people tend to fall far-right or far-left. Most people are pretty centrist generally in Europe (although Republicans probably consider European centrists as Communists.

One would think that Le Pen's votes would go to Sarkozy in the final vote, but I don't think it's so simple. She's been trash-talking him very hard, essentially calling him an idiot and a failure... it's hard to believe that any of her supporters would vote for Hollande, though, so I'm guessing quite a few of them will be staying home.

Le Pen is not to the right. Economically to the left and a racist nutjob. The party took the worst of the left and the worst of the right and did a mashup... egads that sounds similar to an experiment that two countried tried in the 30's.
