"A more effective strategy, Clinton has told anyone who would listen, would be to focus almost exclusively on Romney's description of himself as a "severe conservative," to deny him any chance to tack back to the center, according to three Democrats close to the situation."

Smart. Clinton's still got it.

Clinton was a good President, but "Greatest President of the 20th Century" is FDR, hands down, with no real competition.

It's how he got into office. He went to the middle and forced his opponents to swerve even harder right. It has had dire consequence, and that strategy has given us the political climate we're in today--but it may just break the back of the GOP in the long haul...

EnviroDude: Clinton? Wasn't he disbarred for obstruction of justice? Didn't he have to pony up $$$ to Paula Jones for it?

Nope:

In 2000 the Arkansas Supreme Court's Committee on Professional Conduct called for the disbarment of President Bill Clinton, saying he lied about his affair with Monica Lewinsky. In January 2001 Clinton reached an agreement under which he was ordered to pay $25,000 in fines to Arkansas state's bar officials and his Arkansas law license was suspended for five years.[4] The agreement came on the condition that Whitewater prosecutors would not pursue federal perjury charges against him.[5] Clinton was suspended by the Supreme Court in October 2001, and, facing disbarment from that court, Clinton resigned from the Supreme Court bar in November.[6]

Agreed, but Clinton was a master campaigner, as is Obama. I honestly think an Obama-Clinton combo with regard to campaigning could be just as powerful as FDR's fairly legendary electoral beatdowns.

I wouldn't put it past Clinton to really go after the GOP in an effort to break it into smaller parts. Stupidity, and thus Republicans, will always exist, but I don't think Clinton will forgive the witch hunt he was put through.

Best in the 20th century? No. Best in the last half-century? Very likely. That isn't to say Clinton was awesome but we've had a lot of middling to shiatty presidents over the last 50 years.

Problem is that if Obama said "speak softly and carry a big stick," then the NRA and the right-wing would scream that he was being pro-stick and anti-gun.

LOL, yeah, so am I. TDR enacted government regulations on the precious free market so kids as young as 4 would not have to work, Teddy also wanted Universal Health Care and a healthy business sector not founded on monopolies. He also broke the GOP machine in Congress.

Both Roosevelts, Truman and Ike before Clinton.

That said, of course Bill is helping. He owes Obama big time for getting Hillary out of the house for 4 years.

And:

"I hold that in this country there must be complete severance of Church and State; that public moneys shall not be used for the purpose of advancing any particular creed; and therefore that the public schools shall be non-sectarian and no public moneys appropriated for sectarian schools." - Theodore Roosevelt, Address, New York, October 12, 1915.

I guess TR would make Santorum sick too.

Add Kennedy to that list, just for his actions during the Cuban missile crisis if nothing else.

Clinton may be the best presidential campaigner of the 20th century, although even that is debatable.
