(ABC)   Texas Mom who put an ad on a billboard in an unsucessful attempt to get her daughter elected prom queen now says her daughter is being "harrassed" and teased by fellow students. Gee, who could possibly have forseen that?   (abcnews.go.com) divider line 75

Parents these days are so clueless. Do they not remember being kids in school?

Just plain sad.

Why did you name your daughter "Brandy Day"?

"Because Brandy Dog would be too cruel."

2012-04-23 12:07:35 PM
Day said Brandy approached the race for prom queen like a real campaign, making hundreds of fliers at home, which she hung up at school and at local businesses in the area. (Day said Brandy's classmates particularly liked one with a slogan, playing off the Victoria's Secret tagline: "Guess who's got Victoria's Secret? If you want to find out, vote for Brandy Day!")

Huh?

Sounds like a completely bogus diagnosis from a junk "doctor." I've had "Mild CP from the waist down" many times while attempting to dance, and just needed to get drunk to be able to shake those kinks outta my legs.

Brandy, you're a fine girl.

Putting up a bill board doens't make you prom queen.

I was going to say something snarky about the Mom but then I RTFA. That's actually kind of swell of her to put so much time and effort into it.

Personally I think being prom queen is a bit silly and maybe Mom shouldn't be pushing her daughter into that sort of thing, but hey, maybe the daughter really wanted it and if so, coolio.

2012-04-23 12:17:36 PM
don't feel bad, the aluminum monster didn't even get to attend her Prom.

She said she wanted to give her daughter, who was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy from the waist down at age 3

OK - highly ignorant question here. I always thought that cerebral palsy was something diagnosed from the shoulders up. Can someone in the know explain that, please?

/Not being snarky - I'm honestly confused.

But would she be a good wife?

TFA: "She said she wanted to give her daughter, who was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy from the waist down at age 3, a bright, shining moment after a life of pain."

What a coont. Yeah, it sounds like the girl had a rough start. And it sounds like she wanted this for herself. But FFS you do *not* classify being prom queen as a bright, shining moment at the end of a struggle. It's fleeting bullshiat. Bright shining moments in life are things like finding a partner to share it with. Raising children. Running a pet rescue. Achieving some personal growth. Helping people who need it. Etc.

Having that clueless tart as a mom sounds like more of a handicap than the palsy.

I remember while in elementary school a bunch of us feeling pity for those kids with 'helicopter parents', not teasing them. This was before helicopter parents were a thing.

Brandy Day is a good name for an adult film "actress"

At least her mom didn't start picking off the competition...

Fun Fact: I had a college class with The Cheerleader Mom (Wanda Holloway) years ago after she was released from prison.

2012-04-23 12:27:29 PM
She should have simply formed a Super PAC. It would at least serve the dual purpose of burnishing her college applications.

Facebook, Twitter and email campaigns, OK. But you've gone too far this time.

yeah I've got a serious case of the Bs'es going on over this diagnosis. It sounds like it's just enough of thing to justify (in her mind) entitling her daughter to all sorts of special privileges., but not enough to actually interefere with her life in any way (she plays Tennis every day, something i've never heard of being possible with CP)

I know people with CP that are brilliant, and awesome folks.
I know a lot of people, (not neccessarily breeders) that are self centered assholes.
Never met a person with CP that was a self centered asshole, tho.
Mothers, yes, I have met some that were.
SO this thread was over in one.

A high school prom is certainly the most significant event to ever happen in the life of any individual, and should be treated accordingly. What else can one do in life that could possibly surpass the achievement of being voted prom queen / king?

Nothing.

Nothing at all.

WTF is up with the Victoria's Secret line?? "If you want to find out..." Find out what? Did her mom want her daughter to flash her drawers if she gets elected??

This is the only confusing part of this stpory. The rest is rather transparent.

Wow the money they spent on that could have been put to better use in a college trust fund maybe.

Sorry Mom, doesn't matter how much money you spend. Defective children don't get elected prom queen.

Maybe you should have a 'Special Olympics'-type prom, and Brandy can be elected queen of that.

I'd consider any hypothetical child of mine to be defective if she even WANTED to be prom queen.

Apparently you can get over "mild CP" (if you play tennis, you're pretty much cured or your condition is so manageable you're effectively cured) and you can get over being awkward (light ribbing from your friends =/= bullying, not yours), but there's still no cure for annoying parents.

Though, to be fair, there's not any actual quote from the daughter, so I kind of suspect that when they interviewed her she heavily implied or outright stated that she went along with it to pacify her mother or simply found the whole thing much, much more hilarious than any of the people "teasing her" about it. Basically, I'm going to wager that she's a good kid that didn't want to take the wind out of her mum's sails or be rude about it, but is already laughing about this and basically treating it according to its actual importance (i.e. essentially none).

//Teenagers tend to grow up into fairly well-adjusted people in spite of their role models. I'm pretty sure parents being automatically embarassing when you're 13 to 19 is one of the evolutionary traits humanity uses to not go completely batshiat all the time.

"I felt like it was an attainable goal for her," Day said. "Physically, mobility-wise, against normal children, she doesn't stand a chance. She can't do track, she can't swim. She plays tennis and has to stay in some kind of sport to keep physically fit because of her mild CP, but I felt like she chose this [prom queen campaign] as something that she thought that she could stand a chance on because all it would require was for her to present a picture for herself, but it appears that it's backfiring."

Oh boo-farking-hoo. So she can't stand out athletically. Lots of kids can't, and they make up for it with this thing called "academics." But no, that would be too hard for little miss princess. Much better to go for a title that requires being a complete attention whore with little to no actual work involved.

2012-04-23 01:25:08 PM
No one cares about the king and queen.

It's what does or does not happen in the hours after prom that is remembered for life.

CigaretteSmokingMan: This kind of stuff seems to be very important in Texas.

No, this kind of crazy is pretty much scattered evenly throughout the states, this is the same crazy that makes "16 and pregnant" or "bridezilla" nationally popular shows.

If you want Texas-specific high-school level crazy, consider that Marching Band is one of if not the biggest sport in the state, regularly exceeding football in monetary and attendance terms at the high-school level, and is so weirdly popular that one university (Rice) frequently doesn't bother with a football team at all, and just has the band. Now that's some weird shiat.
