(ABC)   Texas Mom who put an ad on a billboard in an unsucessful attempt to get her daughter elected prom queen now says her daughter is being "harrassed" and teased by fellow students. Gee, who could possibly have forseen that?   (abcnews.go.com) divider line 75

Hagenhatesyouall: A high school prom is certainly the most significant event to ever happen in the life of any individual, and should be treated accordingly. What else can one do in life that could possibly surpass the achievement of being voted prom queen / king?

Nothing.

Nothing at all.

Her mother wants her to have one moment to shine. She is going to Baylor to become a pediatrician. Maybe she can have her moment when she really accomplishes something significant, which she seems very capable of doing, rather than winning a meaningless popularity contest.

FTA: "Together, they canvassed the neighborhood, she said, asking local businesses to display fliers and sponsor her, and soliciting funds from friends, family and Day's colleagues at the information technology company where she works."

WTF? Maybe I don't understand because my school didn't have prom queen/king, but do people really go to these lengths? Why the fark does she need sponsors?

Civil_War2_Time: Sounds like a completely bogus diagnosis from a junk "doctor." I've had "Mild CP from the waist down" many times while attempting to dance, and just needed to get drunk to be able to shake those kinks outta my legs.

I don't care how mild the CP is, I'm not voting for it.

For our prom, one of the popular girls' moms announced that she would host a breakfast party on the morning after prom. We generally saw it as ass-kissing to get votes for her daughter, and we voted against her because of it. She did not get elected Prom Queen. Then we all showed up for breakfast the next morning, just to be obnoxious

Huck And Molly Ziegler: Danger Mouse: Brandy, you're a fine girl.

But would she be a good wife?

I'll never know, for alas, my love and my lady is the sea.

Of course she would!

She said she wanted to give her daughter, who was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy from the waist down at age 3

OK - highly ignorant question here. I always thought that cerebral palsy was something diagnosed from the shoulders up. Can someone in the know explain that, please?

/Not being snarky - I'm honestly confused.

Isn`t the clue in the word `cerebral`?

Not true. CP is a spasticity in one or more limbs in the most common form, though there are other forms that present as ataxia- tremors. I have a mild case myself, in that the left leg is perpetually "tight" compared to the right. It's about a half inch shorter than the right due to the muscle spasm, but overall appears normal. There's also a very minor spasticity in my left hand- minor enough to be invisible unless you look for it, though I can't do much of anything with that hand. Typing, for example is about 80% right-handed for me.

Mine is hemiplegic- one side, only the left. There are monoplegic through quadriplegic, and it wouldn't be very odd at all to have someone with CP presenting only in the legs.

I have mild CP on the left side. I have always been clumsy and had a weird walk (one teacher called me swivel hips). I played/umped softball, volleyball and bowling until I was in my mid 30's. I am now in my mid-50's and I fall down alot. I sometimes need to be pulled out of bed (screaming from the pain) after working the day before. My boss tries to work me part time every other day so that I can at least function enough to keep the job.

CP is hard to explain. It is a brain "disconnect" that causes painful spasms. The best analogy I can explain would be an electrical short circuit. I can be walking around and all of a sudden it's, oh god!, and the pain can take me down. It doesn't make you shake, unless you get very weakened from standing too long or walking for too long. It's a fine balance. Moving around and doing things for short periods of time works best for me. I can't imagine having it on both sides or having the non-mild type.

Same here, but my left leg is about an inch shorter and skinnier than my right leg and can't do much with the left hand.

"Guess who's got Victoria's Secret? If you want to find out, vote for Brandy Day!"

So what Brandy was really saying was that if they voted for her she'd strip down to her underwear on stage, right? Because otherwise I have no idea what this means.

Depends on the level of damage and location.

I've known kids who had limited to no control over their body movements but were smart as all get out (even went to college and work FT). I've also known kids who have better control (but not perfect) but are developmentally delayed to MR intelligence and have limited ability to speak.

It just seems weird though that it just affected her lower body, never heard of that. It usually affects all of the limbs to some degree. My thinking is that child doesn't actually have CP, mom just describes it that way because its the easiest.

However, I'm not a MD and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night

It's what does or does not happen in the hours after prom that is remembered for life.

No, of course not. The way you're reading it would make it a dead giveaway, wouldn't it? No, what it means is, Brandy keeps her head up in the locker room, and knows who's wearing which brands. And if you vote for her, she'll use her time in the spotlight to dish, dish, dish!

ringersol: TFA: "She said she wanted to give her daughter, who was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy from the waist down at age 3, a bright, shining moment after a life of pain."

What a coont. Yeah, it sounds like the girl had a rough start. And it sounds like she wanted this for herself. But FFS you do *not* classify being prom queen as a bright, shining moment at the end of a struggle. It's fleeting bullshiat. Bright shining moments in life are things like finding a partner to share it with. Raising children. Running a pet rescue. Achieving some personal growth. Helping people who need it. Etc.

Having that clueless tart as a mom sounds like more of a handicap than the palsy.

Newsflash; she is an 18 year old high school girl who is (about to) graduat(e)(ing). Most of the people you met and spent time with in high school will be gone from your life after you graduate. Does this mean that every moment spent with them is "fleeting bullshiat' because you didn't marry any of them (or got/made one teen pregnant)? Are you less of a person if you spent time with "friends" who you'll never see again instead of working at the local animal shelter?

Let's make a list:

Things you aren't allowed to fondly remember as period defining occurrences any more:

1. Your first time having sex (unless you married the other person and stay together for ever and ever and ever).
2. Winning and celebrating a high school sporting competition
2b. Watching a friend win a high school sporting competition and participating in the celebration
3. That one party where everyone got so drunk that you'll be telling the stories for years
4. Your first car (and road trip)

/quit whining about people enjoying and ascribing value to interests you don't share

Yea I had to do the stupid cheap "shot"
I don't think doctors know what autism really is anymore.
I don't either. I'm not a doctor and I blame demons or witchcraft.

Jument: I was going to say something snarky about the Mom but then I RTFA. That's actually kind of swell of her to put so much time and effort into it.

Personally I think being prom queen is a bit silly and maybe Mom shouldn't be pushing her daughter into that sort of thing, but hey, maybe the daughter really wanted it and if so, coolio.

This.

That about sums it up for me.

If Mom wanted to give her CP kid a night she'd always remember, she should have hooked her up with Walter Jr.
