Are you sure it isn't a Hispanic Killer Whale that's simply being classified as white for race-baiting purposes?

Aye, aye! and I'll chase him round Good Hope, and round the Horn, and round the Norway Maelstrom, and round perdition's flames before I give him up.

I used to like both Moby Dick and William Hurt.

But in one movie they managed to slaughter my opinion of both.

The sightings were made during a research cruise off Kamchatka by a group of Russian scientists and students, co-led by Erich Hoyt, the long-time orca scientist, conservationist and author who is now a senior research fellow with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS).

Good thing it wasn't Japanese scientist or there would be a white sale on whale blubber in Tokyo.

Big effing deal. Everyone knows that. It's just what we call them. You're like one of those "You know, tomatoes are actual fruit." people. STFU already, we know.

Can't speak for everyone, but nope, I'm not. If someone else didn't jump in first I would've done the honors. Sometimes it's not about being funny so much as using every chance to make bigotry look bad. Just sayin'.

Yes, yes they are.

The rule is:
All Dolphins are Whales, but not all Whales are Dolphins. Like squares and rectangles.

Even a bottlenose dolphin is technically a whale. Calling an Orca a dolphin is a more accurate picture on the whole, but its no less a whale than your standard Humpback whale.

The dividing line is that all whales are part of Order Cetacea. Dolphins, or family delphinidae, comprises the largest family within that order.

I wonder if this whale's an urban legend to the other orcas, like. He rolls into your grotto with his pod, and the other whales are all, "damn, this guy doesn't even care about natural camouflage, he's just out there, man."

2012-04-23 09:46:21 AM
Of course, we all know that killer whales were originally called whale killers, because that's what they do.

2012-04-23 09:47:05 AM
Actually, the whale wasn't spotted. It's white. No spots.

2012-04-23 09:47:25 AM
It's ok if that whale uses the N word - a lot of his friends are black.

I picture a bunch of seals thinking "we're safe... there's only that big fat beluga whale, and those guys are harmless. Wait.... do belugas have dorsal fins?"

Fark Me Runnin: Killer whales aren't whales.

Defined how?

the term "whale" applies to any number of large sea-mammals of a number of different species. What makes, say a right whale a whale and not an Orca?
Yes they are closely related to dolphins but so are most whales.

They are in fact whales (part of Order Cetacea) and are in fact Dolphins (Family Delphinidae).

Squares and rectangles people, squares and rectangles.

(All squares are rectangles, not all rectangles are squares)

Dolphins

Well, I wouldn't use that term, but yes. I thought you all had already established that he wasn't the first African-American President. Then, in the same conversation some clown posts a pic of Charlize Theron and says, "This is a REAL African-American...duuur" and then you all sit back at your computers satisfied with yourselves.

Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear

This handy chart seems to indicate that you much rather go all Ahab on an Orca as opposed to a sperm whale:

I first actually need 3 or 4 minutes after some clown posts a Charlize Theron pic before I can sit back and be satisfied with myself.

I always thought "whale" was a paraphyletic group. Much like reptiles not including birds.
