That's what people have to understand! All we have to do is weather the drain of baby boomers for a few decades and then Social Security and Medicare will be fine! Just as long as the federal government isnt mortgaged to the hilt we should be fine.

Oh wait....

Never mind.

So let's tax the crap out of rich people and count capital gains as regular income and remove the cap on Social Security above !4 million in annual income.

Problem solved!

So what you're saying is, it's high time I have my employer opt out of my SS withholding, and just never pay it?

Or should I continue paying a 6.2% tax on my wages because...old people don't die as quickly? The government doesn't know how to manage money? The dollar ain't worth what it once was?

Tax cuts on the rich alone won't do it. We also need to stop taxing corporations, and remove all regulation from business. We haven't had a Triangle Shirtwaist style fire in quite some time. Think of all the new business for funeral parlors!

Here's the thing - as someone who has been paying into both SS and Medicare for 20+ years, I say fark you to the old person pandering by saying they will reduce entitlements for those under 55. If our representatives in Congress want to make cuts, make them effective immediately - the baby boomer generation has had years to prepare and many of them have hefty pensions to boot - a luxury us X'ers will never have.

You do realize there are no coffers, their never were any coffers, the whole lock box bull shiat was a lie from the get go. The Social Security tax is just a tax whose monies go first to pay current benefits and any excess winds up in the general budget.

Anyway SS is easy to fix just remove the cap on how much income is taxed, but you do realize that Republicans will oppose any tax increase.

actually, the GOP is fine raising taxes on the middle class. they just don't want to raise taxes on rich people or corporations, because that'd be socialism. stealing money from poor people tho? yeah. totally cool with it.

Social Security and Medicare would have been fixed if we didn't have an entire political party arguing in bad faith.

And Social Security isn't even a big problem. A slight bump in the taxable income for social security would see it funded in perpetuity. But the only reason we can't have that, is because one of our political parties wants to deliver your social security money to Wall Street. Because if there's any punishment fitting for people who gambled our economy to the brink of disaster, it's refusing to reinstate the regulation we apparently needed and handing them millions of accounts that we couldn't *possibly* allow to fail.

Similarly with Medicare, really. If one of our parties wasn't so busy inventing boogeymen, this shiat would have been solved. It's their legislative wet dream with Obama/Romney's name on it. If they weren't so hell-bent on trying to tar Obama with "worst president ever" they wouldn't be in the position where their 'Big Idea' for dealing with cost increases is to cap government contribution (vouchers), pushing cost increases directly onto seniors and pretending that solves anything.

Yeah, "out of sight out of mind" is nothing if not bold, serious and responsible.

I think we need to impose theJerry Macguire method of geriatric care - "help us help you". Basically at 65 if you want medical benefits, you must prove you do at least 30min of aerobics 7 days a week. Failure to comply results in termination of benefits. Barring coma or a very limited set of pre-existing medical criteria, no exceptions.

Wait until they do what other places have done. 9% of my income goes from my employer right into the stock market for my retirement. If end up with $200,000k or so in that then I can "self manage" it otherwise the fees would eat it all up. So far they are earning about 3% over the last 3 years yet cash in the bank here earns more than that.

I agree with you. The Republicans proposed this reduction in SS benefits for those under 55 to keep those older than 55 in their camp, particularly all those retirees in Arizona, Florida, and elsewhere. Also, it's their typical divide-and-conquer approach, split us into infighting among ourselves.

I say raise the payroll cap as President Obama has proposed. I also don't mind SSI tax increases because SSI goes to more than retirees. Widows, widowers, children who have lost a parent or both, and the disabled received SSI. Remember, it's a insurance program and not completely intended for retirement.

edmo: The "aging workforce" is dumping money into social security at a good pace as there are lots of them and they make good money being at the top of their careers.

Actually, no. the Social Security has been running a deficit for the last couple of years.

Social Security's expenditures exceeded non-interest income in 2010 and 2011, the first such occurrences since 1983, and the Trustees estimate that these expenditures will remain greater than non-interest income throughout the 75-year projection period.

Good: We have about $2.5 Trillion in the SS Trust Fund
Bad: The trust fund is nothing more than IOUs.
Ugly: Redeeming these IOUs directly increases the deficits and debt.
