Master P but not that one: For last few months I've been watching a bunch of people promoting The Death of WCW book. I thought it may be a good read, cool stories, interesting insight, but after 50 pages... wow. This book is terrible. Who proofread it? Did they even worry about structure?

This crap reads like an internet blog. The writers don't even try to write like legitimate authors.

/end rant

Bought it years ago and while it was thorough, there wasn't anything in there I hadn't already heard. I'd like a real expose' that details stuff like; what was happening backstage around 2000 when Kevin Sullivan was head booker; Kevin Nash's disastrous run as booker; what backstage was like in mid-2001 when nobody knew who was going to buy WCW, but everyone saw the end coming.

Overall rating: 3.0
First hour: 2.48
Second hour: 3.22
Third hour: 3.41

This means only one thing to WWE: Brock is f*cking over! Push him moar! MOAR CENA MOAR BROCK F*CK EVERYBODY ELSE, ESPECIALLY FWC.

Not gonna dip into actual Smackdown spoilers, but according to PWTorch.com, a crowd estimate for the tapings at Grand Rapids' Van Andel Arena had the crowd at 4000 at a venue that usually can hold around 11k for WWE events with most of the seats on the hard camera side empty.

What a sub half-sold arena might look like:

pwtorch.com

In the early '90's I went to a Superstars taping at the Bradley Center which holds 18k+ for WWE. Remember, business was down then. They had the ring set up in one of the corners, think of it as if instead of the ring being in the middle of the room, it was pushed over a third of the way. An attendance figure of around 4500 from the Observer comes to mind. BTW, 4 hours. Taping multiple weeks of TV was brutal for the crowd. Bear with me, I'm a little drunk. Hulk was out, occupational gimmicks and clowns abounded, and ECW was rising out of the ashes of Tri-State. This was around the time, thanks to a local company running a promotion with the radio station I was at, that I learned of indies, before everyone bought a ring and started running shows. I was drawn back into wrestling and ended up working for that company for almost the next 10 years.

IMO, here's the problems with WWE:
- Too many cooks in the kitchen.
- Trying to do too much with all the backstage bits. If you've been to a televised event, it's a crowd killer. One of the things that WWE has going for it is that people pay to be in the audience at a TV event so they have that revenue coming in and the people actually want to be there for the event as opposed to the Impact Zone, where you might have fans, but mostly it's tourists looking to kill a few hours and see Hulk Hogan because they were too cheap to buy a ticket in the '80's. People who want to be there react differently to those who are just there. Hell, you can put me in the group that watches the shows because of these threads. Before the FWC, I'd watch when I got a chance. You think these threads are brutal? Watch a PPV with the boys.
- Vince didn't make Hulk, Austin, HBK, Undertaker, Punk, etc. They made themselves and Vince realized what he had, IMO. Even in the '80's when young Eddie the mark went to house shows and was an asshole heel fan, he saw how Hulk lit up the room. Limited worker, method matches but God damn did the crowd light up for him. Similar deal with Austin. He could talk when allowed to. Anyone remember The Ringmaster? Drizzling shiats. Biz is down. Let Punk talk. He can work. But we have to overthink everything. DB can bring it in the ring but is milquetoast on the mic but the people that follow wrestling love him. Let's shiat on him.
- There are so many "partnerships" that they care most about delivering to their clients than the fans. Which is a circular argument. Remember, WWE is a content provider for NBC/Universal, hence the 3 hour abortion we saw Monday, as is TNA with whoever owns Spike. What were the staples of early television? Bowling and pro wrestling. Easy and cheap to produce. They lose sight of the big picture when they care more about the partnerships with outside gimmicks than when they lose the fans.
- If this were the case years ago, we would have known who shot JR the next week. Quit hotshotting the farking thing. Let it work its way. Brock/Cena in 3 weeks? I know they're trying to pop some numbers, but c'mon. Perhaps have Brock squash some guys and build that to someone who might have a chance against him.
- You have to rotate talent. I'll draw the radio reference with beating the same records to death no matter how much people love them. Go away for a bit, and you're more over than ever when you come back. This would let guys heal or at least take some time off.

And Holy Christ was that a rant...

This has been a regular trend on Smackdown. Have you not noticed the lack of wide shots? I mean, half the show is zoomed in on wrestlers nostrils to avoid showing the empty arenas.

I'll reiterate, they need to reduce the number of house shows in a week, b/c the product is getting thrown out there and fans are burned out. Either you fully commit to removing the brand extension and have on roster, or you go back to it full force. The half assed job is just jading fans. Why go to Smackdown if you are going to see these guys on Raw anyway?

As for Buff Bagwell, a buddy of mine named his dog Bagwell in 1998. It was more b/c his little brother loved Jeff Bagwell. But, when we noticed the dog was pretty much functionally retarded, he changed the dog's name to Buff Bagwell at my suggestion. That dog did call a better match.

As seen on Monday night, WWE did an injury angle with Beth Phoenix that appeared to be legit. Expect to see more of this as WWE is trying to do more "plausible" injuries where they initially don't reveal that it's a work and report it on their website like they would a real injury. The idea is for the talents to use Facebook and Twitter to help get the injuries over.

I'm calling shenanigans on this. IMO she did tweak her ankle, but it's not serious, so they are rolling with it. Vince has lost it when it comes to what hits the internet, as he shiat his pants when news of Edge's contract expiring hit the web (that's why Edge was at Raw, to talk new deal), and let's face it, WWE creative is lurking on sites like this one (Hi you arseholes!)

I find it funny though, they are saying they are going to use injuries to get over.

Uhm, how about compelling stories, interesting angles and MORE WRESTLING.

farking retards.

Sorry, but they have to take two of the best workers in the company and make then go through a horrible "your daddy is a drunk and now, so are you!" angle that just never ends and makes you want to see both wrestlers just disappear or worse, wind up in TNA where they couldn't be used quite so horribly.

In a perfect world (lol, I mistyped that as "perfect work") they would use kayfabe injuries to let the talent take some time off. Then they can tweet about "rehab" after waking up in their own bed before they take their morning dump in their own toilet. Do it when business usually lulls and use that to bring in some new talent and try to get them over. Hell, if they still have the "defend the title every 30 days" gimmick, you can rest someone for 3 or 4 weeks and drag their "wounded" ass back to TV, playing up the injury and the title, and if someone's a douchey heel type, get more heat on them. You don't even have to take them off TV. Use the "rehab" as another Goddamned video package. You can use that to build sympathy for the babyface or to draw heat on the heel. 2 birds, one stone.

The schedule is farking brutal. Yes, the territory days had a brutal schedule, but they weren't taking all the bumps that today's style dictates. Just off of the top of my head, the most recent active wrestlers on either WWE or TNA TV that worked territories are Flair, Michaels, Undertaker and Sting. Michaels and Undertaker being the youngest of the bunch. Rewind back to my rants on guys learning their crafts working 4-7 times a week and with top indy guys lucky to get 3-4 dates a week. And they usually don't get to ride with a veteran in the car from shot to shot. That's where you learned the business. Drinking and riding. I learned by drinking and shutting up. And not bumping a million times, getting tossed outside or going up top in every goddamed match. Remember, the reason why Bobby Heenan went to Atlanta was that they offered health insurance and his neck/back was farked 324 ways to Sunday at that time.

/And yes, the matches are usually better at house shows. That's also where they test newer folks and new matchups.
//Don't self-defecate over ratings. There are more choices than ever on what to watch than during the Monday Night Wars/Attitude Era. I've also heard about people watching stuff on the intertubes. The pool has been diluted. It's about Vince and Dixie and their relationship with their clients and networks. This also works against the product if they cater too much to their clients than the fans. People can get really tone deaf in this regard. It can be a catch-22 here.
///Rant over. See youse brave souls for TNA tonight.

I absolutely agree with your post. I do have to say though, when I worked, ECW was the hot commodity so a lot of indy workers, myself included, had to mimic that style because that was what fans wanted to see and of course more fans, more dates, more money.

There was a good five years there in the late 90s, early 2000s that fans were just out for blood and that is what we gave them. Not necessarily "blood" since that wasn't allowed in every state back then, but high risk stuff that makes my knees hurt just thinking about it.
