Sounds like he was a beat behind, but ok.

2012-04-23 11:07:13 AM
Just a thought... instead of putting, "I do not seek to be totally accurate in the licks or solos, just to get the general idea across." in the description. Just say, "My own version / take on Sultans"

That said, guitar was pretty good... voice, bleeeh

His glasses make me want to bully him.

This was a good performance; both his execution (which was clean) and his timing (which was consistent). The sound was very clear, and I enjoyed it and would definitely enjoy it if I saw a solo guitarist performing such live.

The problem is more that you can't barely get a headline green-lit without major trolling added with the subtlety with which the Japanese apply salt to their cooking.

Subby: bad but you're doing what you have to do
Guitarist: make some friends, form a band. With a singer. Otherwise, just keep on keepin' on.

I always reserve judgement on the younger players because I think it can be easier to learn to play other's stuff, even very difficult stuff, by rote. I'd like to hear a lot of these young talents after they've had a chance to take a couple hard shots from life right in the balls unleashing their own creativity and outlook on life that colors their own song.

Kid played the song great. Love to hear his own stuff at some point.

I was thinking either this was going to be truly "Amazing", or, it was a standard Fark "opposite" headline and it was going to be Deep Sunshine "Final Countdown" bad.

This was really neither. He was ok, guitar was better than the voice, but, otherwise, I wouldn't say "amazing".

He'll do.

/ He does have a good singing voice. Just needs a little vocal training to bring it out fully.

looks like he learned from tabs.

Do you know why no one covers Dire Straits songs?

Because they can't.

Knopfler's right hand technique is a lot harder than it looks, and this kid's done a pretty good job of getting it down.

I'll amend my Boobies a bit... after rewatching, especially the second half of the video, his playing was more impressive than at first glance.... I think a lot of people are like me though and don't watch close enough.

That being said, I also think his singing which is about 5/10 at best, hampers the focus which should be on his guitar playing.

They do some slight improvements to the video quality (bit wider on the camera shot, maybe have them get in the car at the beginning, leave at the end, etc... just a bit more "show"), that would be a truly professional video.... the song was performed great.

Not being musically inclined I've always just enjoyed songs at face value and didn't care if it showed technical skill or not but the way he kept muting/tapping the strings after strumming them was really distracting. Is he doing that to make up for a lack of drums or is it a creative style choice?

Awesome sound quality though

Liked both the guitar and the voice, just hated that he went to the effort to record and mix the whole thing and spent half the song singing away from his mic. Either put another mic by the neck and mix the stereo down, or wear a good headset mic. Otherwise solid effort.

Just my opinion, but, if you watch their cover of "Here Comes the Sun" (also very good, along with most of their other "van" covers).... but, she really benefits from the sunglasses.

I wished he would've done a straight rhythm guitar track for the song, then did the guitar fills and solos and vocals over top of that. for the first 3/4's the rhythm was pausy and all the over the place.

I'd like to see him cover "setting me up", "south bound again" or "in the gallery".

and of course, here's the legendary version from Alchemy, remastered. unfortunately it's from vevo so there's probably going to be a commercial.

Link

things i noticed: Mark's guitar isn't as loud on this version as the original live version. the hi hat is louder, especially in the intro.
and his vocals get more presence, leading to hearing a few new things here and there.
I always thought that Hal's rhythm guitar was regretfully mixed too low on almost the entire album (except Two Young Lovers and Private Investigations).

pretty much came to say this - Mark puts together some very complex combinations that are difficult at best, esp. with short fingers/small hands.

chaotey: The kid's got some good chops.

His voice was much more suited for this song, much more enjoyable there. But, she is really good, I wouldn't be surprised to see her name much more known eventually.

Mark Knopfler is a living legend, and this was a very decent cover that I really enjoyed. Didn't quite get that twangy whine that Mark puts into the guitar, but hey, there's really only one man who can do that.

Cool stuff.
