Headso: SN1987a goes boom: Jesus, that turd rocket cost them $850 million? I could've gotten the same results from cheap Estes rocket from Walmart.

When I heard that their rocket asploded I was wondering where they get all their parts for it, where does the metal come from and whatnot. It seems like some below grade impure metals or a fuel mix that burns too hot or whatever would shiatcan the whole thing. The Chinese tollerate the NK but they really don't want them to be causing trouble beyond the borders of Korea, so I could see them actually sending the north koreans shiatty materials.

I think Obama has a ray beam he shoots at the missile causing it to malunction.

this is classic behavior for NK. They are trying to justify the next nuclear test.

I say we start a betting pool. I say a nuke test in 12-14 days, based on their phony escalation.

Can only laugh. When NK has a rocket that can go more than 40 feet without falling apart, then I'll worry.

2012-04-23 06:25:10 PM

SuperNinjaToad: Actually in all seriousness NK can vaporize Seoul and turn it into ashes. Even though their weaponry is outdated and mostly 1970's era Soviet pieces they have enough of them and are lethal enough to do just that.

Most Westerners don't realized that Seoul is a mere 35 miles from the DMZ!!! It is well within range of the hundreds of thousands of artilery pieces that will rain down on them... and in some ways it is harder for modern defenses to defeat such antiquated weaponry. As difficult as it is, it is still much easier to shoot down a few advance guided missiles than it is to shoot down hundreds of thousands 155 mm shells with high explosives raining down on you.

Those arty tubes would die within 30 minutes of firing their first shot, most would die within just a few minutes. Triangulate and retaliate, rinse and repeat. All that NK soft target crap is stationary.

OgreMagi: beefoe: Arkanaut: In any case, it's pretty much a deterrence situation -- even the North Koreans must know that Pyongyang will be a crater within hours of them opening fire.

True, but the North would inflict a whole lotta damage in a couple hours.

source: globalsecurity.org

"According to one report, a South Korean security analyst suggested that DPRK artillery pieces of calibers 170mm and 240mm "could fire 10,000 rounds per minute to Seoul and its environs." The number of Koksan guns is not publicly reported, but it is reliably reported that North Korea has about 500 long-range artillery tubes within range of Seoul, double the levels of a the mid-1990s. Large caliber self propelled artillery pieces typically have a sustained rate of fire of between four and eight rounds per minute. This suggests a total rate of fire of artillery alone of between 2,000 and 4,000 rounds per minute. The DPRK's two hundred 240mm MRLs fire either 12 or 22 rounds, providing a maximum single salvo of no more than 4,400 rounds. "

10,000 rounds per minute times 120 minutes = 1.2 million rounds of pretty heavy ordnance.

They won't get 120 minutes of firing time. Within moments after the first salvo is fired, South Korea (and the US) will fire a massive barrage of highly accurate missles, destroying the NK ability to continue the attack. Any damage the few barrages NK manages to fire will be from dumb luck considering how inaccurate their outdated equipment is.

Are you sure about the "moments after the first salvo is fired". Do you think the entire SK army is on hair-trigger alert? I mean, what would happen in reality is that within moments of all hell breaking loose, in SK, the decision to respond will go up the chain of command and back down. Let's say that in a perfect case this is ten minutes. It would then take another bit of time for all-hands on deck and even flight time of rockets would be a minute or two. So let's say minimum 20 minutes of 10,000 artillery rounds per minute into a major city where all you care about is mass casualties. Yes, NK would lose, but Seoul would suffer an incredible amount of damage and loss of life.

You have to understand Kim Jong-un's manner of speaking. He's very forceful and committed to the truth. People get aroused and frightened by his boisterousness, but he's a sensible man with deep sensitivities.

I wish the world would take a moment to get to know him.

About 6-12 hours to get 90% of it according to the US military.

But I'm sure the MLRS batteries will be getting a work out.

Highly doubtful. Back in November of 2010 the North Koreans shelled Yeonpyeong Island and the South Koreans did absolutely nothing. Sure, it was only a few dozen shells were fired, but 50+ homes were destroyed and 2 soldiers were killed. Still, it shows that the South Koreans will not just instantly return fire when fired upon. And that was not the first time the North Koreans had fired upon the South without retaliation.

I would speculate that the U.S. and the South Korean military have their eyes and ears open 24/7/365.
The first crack or muzzle flash from artillery or rocket is going to get every helicopter in the air, and all
Combat Air Patrol immediately going after their pre-determined target areas. The ground troops at all of
the camps along the DMZ would just do what they could to hold the line against any armor and infantry
until the close air support from Japan/Guam and Naval air support can get there.

I would venture to say that North Korea's command and control would be decapitated within a couple hours.
though.Once it was clear that the combined U.S. and South Korean troops were holding the line enough,
we could start the offensive push back. B-52's and B2's would come from Diego Garcia, cruise missiles from ships and naval air support would probably be the icing on the cake a few hours later . And lord help them if they use chemical, biological or nuclear weapons against South Korea..Cause if they do that, all bets are off and they might get a Trident or one of the Air Forces finest from North Dakota straight up their Pyongyangs ..

But let's hope it doesn't come to that..The only winning move is not to play..
